Wow, we're way behind in these, lol. Ok, time for the next film in the animated classics discussions: Make Mine Music! These package features aren't always the most fun to discuss, but they've got plenty to look at as well.

I actually love the package features. Make Mine Music was supposed to be like Fantasia with modern music, although it's not in the same league as Fantasia. They re-used discarded animation from Claire de Lune and added different music and retitled it as Blue Bayou. My favorite pieces are All the Cats Join In, After You've Gone & The Whale That Wanted To Sing At the Met.

Of course you can't mention Make Mine Music without mentioning how it was horribly censored. Hopefully we will get a complete version eventually.

I like "Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet" and "All the Cats Join in" and the part with all the instruments dancing. I remember reading about the Martins and the Coys (

anyone seen the spoof of it on HOM - with the McHats and the CoyFields - I think it was "Housesitters") in one of the Animation books and when I bought the VHS I was surprised it wasn't included. I forget why they deleted it though. Was it b/c they had too much guns and all that?

The package features consist of pieces and some of them are just great. My favourites from MMM are "All the Cats Join In" and "After You've Gone". I guess I'm more or less a "Jazz Man".

I've had the complete version of MMM for quite a long time. I was able to tape it on an early afternoon about ten years ago.

I hope there some day will be uncut R1 DVDs of MMM and Melody Time. Then I might be able to get the old Japanese laserdiscs of these titles for a somewhat reasonable price...

In short, mvealf, what is a VHD?

It's been VERY long since I've seen this, and I can barely remember it. Since it's missing from my school library and the video stores here, and since it's low on my Disney DVD shopping list, I don't think I'll see it any time soon, either. Hmm I wonder if my local library has them? I often forget that they have a DVD section there.

Lars, I'm sure mvealf will know more about this since he has the discs and I've never seen one, but in the meantime, I think VHD's were another kind of videodisc made by JVC in Japan, just like in the US RCA made CED videodiscs while Phillips/MCA were trying to introduce the optical Laserdisc (father of the CD

I think VHD stands for Video High Density or something like that

Make Mine Music wasn't one of the best Disney animation my favorite is Peter and the Wolf and Johnnie Fedra and Alice Bluebonnet.
I wasn't that please with the segments and since they edit McCoy and Martins out of the Disney DVD I got mad!!!
I remember watching it when I was young and I have nothing against that cartoon segment I hope Disney adds the segment in the future.

mvealf thanks for the 3-D info! I was almost gonna ask about that when I wrote my previous post! Do you have any of these? SPECIALLY Dial M??

By the way a S-VHS copy of Make Mine Music that was taped from the Disney channel (sadly that day the transmision was awfull) is uncut so it's interesting how things have changed about, since they were broadcasting it uncut about say, 10 years ago?

Yes, I remember the good ole days of The CLASSIC Disney Channel. I taped one of the Wonderful World Of Disney shows called Four Fabulous Characters (I think), which included The Martins and the Coys.

Yes, I have those 3D VHDs. The technology is the best for any home system, much better than the red and blue glasses junk we get here.

I love the package features and Make Mine Music is my favorite of the bunch.

Of the 10 segments, there isn't a single one that I think is weak or that I don't enjoy. The Martins and the Coys, All The Cats Join In, After You've Gone and Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet being my favorites.

The idea of a popular music version of Fantasia is so great, especially for the time period it was created! It also feels like a creative leap forward from the Silly Symphonies.

I also have an uncut version of MMM taped from the beloved 'old-school' Disney Channel (sigh!

) and treasure the Martins and the Coys segment.

In addition to a deluxe version released on DVD I would love, love, love to have a version of the soundtrack (even if it were just recorded off of the TV) on CD!

I've managed to find recorded versions of All The Cats Join In, Two Silhouettes and After You've Gone - although not all are the exact versions as heard in the movie.

I know that not only are these movies unknown by the general populace but it surprises me how many Disney fans haven't even seen them. If nothing else they are definitely worth a rent to see their place in the timeline of Disney animation.

Yeah, our school library is the same way- they have almost everything (at least on VHS). Unfortunately, this is one of the few that they are missing.

i found out that i have recorded the Martins and the Coys from a TV show that appearded on the Disney channel. i also have a scene from Pecos Bill where he has a cigarette in his mouth. i'm so lucky

I haven't seen these film in ages! It was one of the first animated classics released on video here in Brazil but, unfortunately, it was only for rental. It has never been rereleased ever since.
I remember most of the segments, though. In my opinion "Blue Bayou" is the highlight of the film. That's not a big surprise, since it was produced for "Fantasia". The camera and special effects work of this segment are just terrific. I'm also a big fan of "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met".
My only drawback with both this film and "Melody Time" is that they both end too melancholically. Not that this is a bad thing but, since both movies are supposed to be a festive celebration of (then) popular music (and it doesn't have the seriousness of "Fantasia"), a more colorful ending would be expected (in the case of "Melody Time", for example, maybe an aditional scenewith the 'talking masks' in the end).

the Peter and the Wolf sequence from Make Mine Music and the Bumble Boogie sequence from Melody Time were originally ideas for Walt's Fantasia sequel that he wanted to do.

Yeah, what a shame we didn't get to see that bee flying in stereophonic sound. By the way, "Bumble Boogie" is one of my favorite pieces of animation ever.
