December 30, 2008 - Our latest DVD review, and quite possibly our last of 2008, looks at Ghost Town. British funnyman Ricky Gervais stars as a misanthropic dentist who starts seeing New York City's ghosts after a surgery renders him temporarily dead. Directed and co-written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) and co-starring Greg Kinnear and Tιa Leoni, this PG-13 romantic comedy is now available from DreamWorks with audio commentary, a substantial making-of featurette, outtakes, and a short visual effects reel. December 29, 2008 - Tomorrow is the final Tuesday of the year, but its position around the holidays has led retailers to issue new titles on weekends around it. In any event, our DVDizzy.com DVD & Blu-ray Schedule is the best way to get informed about all of the new and recent debuts.
December 27, 2008 - Following a week of no reviews, we bring you our detailed look at "Hannah Montana": The Complete First Season. The hokey Disney Channel sitcom that launched a tween empire and made Miley Cyrus a household name shows us the life of an ordinary girl who secretly is a major pop star. Disney's recent four-disc set holds 26 episodes, the first installment of this year's Disney Channel Games, and a featurette with Miley and father Billy Ray at their Nashville ranch. Don't miss the full review.
December 24, 2008 - Disney has a rotten Christmas present for fans of their adaptations of C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia books: they're dropping out of third installment Voyage of the Dawn Treader. According to a Hollywood Reporter article, the Mouse is backing out for "budgetary and logical reasons." The film is apparently slated to still move forward, with Walden Media searching for a new studio to co-produce and co-finance. The participation of committed talent now falls into jeopardy. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe became one of Disney's highest-grossing films of all-time when it was released three years ago, but this summer's sequel Prince Caspian was one of the year's most surprising flops, failing to accrue half of its predecessor's domestic earnings.
December 20, 2008 - It's taken over six years and many unfulfilled rumors, but Region 1 is finally getting a two-disc DVD of Lilo & Stitch. Disney's last hit 2D-animated theatrical release will resurface in a 2-Disc Big Wave Edition on March 24, 2009, the same day that another major new animated Disney film is set to debut (more on that in about a month). Extras will include deleted scenes, music videos by A*Teens and The Hawaiian Chorus, Lilo & Stitch Island Adventure Games, "DisneyPedia: Hawaii", "A Stitch in Time", and "much, much more!" That last component should include everything that's made it onto the film's internationally-available Special Editions. Amazon.com now has the DVD up for preorder with their price guarantee. UPDATE: We've posted cover art here.
Two weeks earlier, on March 10th, three popular yesteryear live-action Disney films are getting new releases. Escape to Witch Mountain, Return to Witch Mountain, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will launch a new silver & gold-colored line called "Walt Disney Family Classics." Carrying list prices of $19.99, the DVDs sound similar to the Special Editions released in 2003 (with the same disc counts retained), although each will contain new pop-up fun fact tracks and a ticket for the unpromising action-packed remake Race to Witch Mountain that hits theaters the same week.
December 19, 2008 - We've just posted our review of this week's new The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea Special Edition DVD. This sequel kicked off a decade full of direct-to-video Disney outings with a tale about Ariel's headstrong human daughter Melody, her interest in the ocean, and the musical adventure it leads her on. The new disc adds 16:9 enhancement, a deleted song, and a new 3-level game while retaining all extras from the original 2000 release. More...
What is the first theatrically released sequel to two TV movies and the only film to octuple its budget domestically yet fall short of some expectations? Why, it's High School Musical 3: Senior Year, of course. Disney's hugely profitable big screen offshoot of the hit cable franchise has been scheduled for three DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 17th. Check out our DVDizzy.com Schedule for the full details.
December 16, 2008 - As always, check out the DVDizzy.com Release Schedule for a look at all of today's new releases. In addition, the studios are shaking up Tuesday tradition with the rest of the year by debuting a number of titles on weekend days. You'll find these releases classified under the Tuesday they're closest to, with the non-standard release date mentioned.
In our latest Blu-ray review, Kelvin Cedeno covers The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the underperforming continuation of the popular sci-fi TV series. The movie reunites Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson), whose expertise is sought in a case of a psychic, pedophilic priest (Billy Connolly) trying to locate a missing FBI agent. Recently released by Fox, this Ultimate X-Phile Edition pulls out all the special features stops, with a comprehensive In-Movie Experience, a 90-minute documentary, deleted scenes, featurettes, an interactive timeline, trailers, a digital copy, and more. Read the full review.
December 15, 2008 - Kelvin Cedeno's newest review looks ahead at The Women. This new take on the 1939 movie and the play that inspired it features a talented all-female cast which includes Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Warner's double-sided disc supplies widescreen and fullscreen formats plus 2 deleted scenes, and 2 featurettes. Read on...
Annette is now the only Wave 8 Walt Disney Treasure still available from the world's biggest e-tailer, Amazon.com. Meanwhile, the UD Forum is abuzz with news that seems to establish one of Wave 9's set-in-stone titles.
Recent Disney DVD Reviews:
High School Musical DVD Game - Serves up 9 video-based activities for individuals, groups, and parties with an HSM motif. Trivia, karaoke, dancing, personality quizzes, and party games are included.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - The inevitable follow-up to 2005's blockbuster fantasy adapts the second book in C.S. Lewis's series. One year older, the Pevensie siblings return to Narnia to find over a thousand years have passed there, bringing much change and injustice. The 3-Disc Collector's Edition DVD serves up an audio commentary by director Andrew Adamson and the film's five young stars, a number of featurettes, deleted scenes, bloopers, and six Easter eggs on Disc 2, and a digital copy.
Recent Non-Disney DVD and Blu-ray Reviews:
"Happy Days": The Fourth Season - Paramount's 3-disc set presents the popular, long-running family sitcom arguably at its best. Included here are the 90-minute demolition derby that introduced us to Fonzie's spunky flame Pinky Tuscadero, the gang's 2-part high school graduation, and a 3rd Anniversary special which celebrates the Cunningham parents' 20th wedding anniversary.
Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! - Blue Sky's CG adaptation stands well above the two prior live-action outings with its sensible, earnest tale of an elephant who discovers an entire miniature city in a single speck. Fox's Two-Disc Special Edition DVD supplies new Ice Age Sid short, an audio commentary, deleted scenes, animation tests, a host of featurettes, and a digital copy.
Step Brothers: 2-Disc Unrated Widescreen Edition - Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly star as 40-year-old slackers who become stepsiblings when their parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) marry. That concept is mined for most of its ridiculous potential in this crude comedy. Sony's premium DVD holds both the theatrical and extended cuts; loads of deleted, extended, and alternate scenes; the world's first musical audio commentary; two making-of featurettes; a digital copy; and more.
