BURBANK, California, May 2005 – The glass slipper finally fits … on October 4, Buena Vista Home
Entertainment (BVHE) proudly debuts the long-awaited two-disc Platinum Edition of Walt Disney’s
original beloved classic, CINDERELLA. On DVD for the first time ever, the highly anticipated release
has been digitally restored and loaded with bonus materials that allow viewers to extend their movie
experience and transport themselves into the magical world of Cinderella, and to gain fascinating insight
into the animated classic with never-before-scene bonus features and footage.
The clock strikes midnight as one of Disney’s most popular fairytales makes her long-awaited DVD
debut after having been unavailable in any form for almost 10 years -- as the sixth release in Disney’s
celebrated “Platinum Edition” line. The CINDERELLA DVD plays off the theme of transformation
found in the movie -- having undergone a painstaking restoration with the use of state of the art digital
technology. DVD bonus features also play off this unique theme, demonstrating the fairytale’s integral
part in the lexicon of pop culture with exciting bonus items such as the all new featurette ESPN
Classics’ “Cinderella Stories” which showcases many of the most unbelievable “Cinderella” moments
in sports history. An all-new DVD-ROM feature, “The Royal Life,” allows participants to scan their
picture and become part of a fairytale world that they can create (read on for more complete bonus
material details). Also returning on VHS, both the DVD and VHS editions will carry a suggested retail
price of $29.99 (SRP). As well, a special DVD Collector’s Gift Set will accompany the release, priced
at $49.99 (SRP).
A major initiative across The Walt Disney Company, CINDERELLA activity will span beyond home
entertainment to bring the magic of Cinderella to life. This includes an unparalleled Disney Consumer
Products (DCP) partnership which will see the release of dozens of new products in all major retail
categories, including toys, apparel, electronics, fast moving consumer goods, stationery, home furnishings
and much more (from third quarter 2005, into the holidays and well into 2006).
Nearly 10 years in the Disney vault, and not released theatrically since 1987, the twelfth feature film to
come from The Walt Disney Company, CINDERELLA was produced by Walt Disney himself, and is
one of only three films to have utilized the skills of every member of the formidable group of key
animators that have been affectionately dubbed his “nine old men” (others are Alice in Wonderland and
Peter Pan). Originally released in 1950, the film features the voice talents of Ilene Woods (Cinderella)
and Eleanor Audley (the wicked Stepmother), while future talk show host Mike Douglas supplies the
singing voice of Prince Charming.
Nominated for three Academy Awards®, the film enjoyed theatrical releases in 1950, 1957, 1965, 1973,
1981 and 1987, drawing more than 75 million moviegoers and grossing more than $350 million
(combined box office, adjusted to current dollars). Since going back into the Disney vault after its VHS
release in 1995, CINDERELLA has become the most requested Disney title for release, even above
such classics as “The Lion King,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

BACKSTAGE DISNEY
From Walt’s Table: A Tribute To Disney’s Nine Old Men
During Walt’s golden age, he would frequently lunch with his top animators and story men at Los Angeles’
famed Tam O’Shanter restaurant, where the team would discuss current projects. One of these was
Cinderella – one of only three films all nine old men worked on (others with the collaboration: Alice in
Wonderland and Peter Pan). For this one-of-a-kind bonus feature, the Cinderella DVD takes viewers back
to the Tam O’Shanter for an informal discussion about Walt and his Nine Old Men -- with many of today’s
top animators, each of whom have known and worked with one or more of them (including Glen Keane, Don
Hahn, Mark Henn, John Musker, Ron Clements and Andreas Deja). Film critic Joel Siegel serves as host.
All-New “From Rags To Riches: The Making of Cinderella”
A fascinating all-new featurette giving insight into the creation of Cinderella and the history behind
it, this definitive making-of show is divided into four sections:
• “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes”
• “Of Mice And Nine Old Men”
• “A Perfect Fit: The Voices of Cinderella”
• “Musically Ever After”
All-New Featurette: “The Cinderella That Almost Was:”
In doing research for the Cinderella DVD, a rare treasure was unearthed in the Disney Archives -- an
envelope that had not been opened since 1949 in which there were photographs of a full set of
storyboards for a version of Cinderella that is different from the final film as we know it. In the
course of developing one of the world's most well-known fairy tales into an animated film, Walt and
his creative team explored many ideas that ultimately did not work. Join Don Hahn, the Producer of
Disney's Beauty And The Beast, on the journey to discover the Cinderella that almost was.
The Art of Mary Blair:
A look back at the remarkable career of one of Disney’s most talented and beloved art director/color
stylists, responsible for the look of Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Three Caballeros, Saludos
Amigos, So Dear To My Heart, Disneyland’s It’s A Small World and many more.
Storyboard To Film Comparison – Opening Sequence
To assist in the animation of Cinderella, Walt Disney had most of the scenes involving human
characters filmed using real actors, in costume. The storyboards for Cinderella provide a unique
blend of Photostat copies of still frames from this film intermingled with traditional hand drawn
artists’ renditions. This segment presents a split-screen for the opening sequence of the movie,
comparing a sampling of these fascinating and unusual storyboards with the final film.
1922 Cinderella Laugh-O-grams: Cinderella
A fascinating look back at the early days of Walt Disney’s career, highlighting Walt’s unusual black
and white, silent animation -- the earliest existing animation done by Disney.
Excerpt From “The Mickey Mouse Club” With Helene Stanley (Original Air Date: January 24, 1956)

Design of Cinderella, Fairy Godmother, Stepmother, Stepsisters, Jaq and Gus, Lucifer, The Prince

Theatrical Trailers
A fascinating look into how the film was presented to audiences through the years including: 1950
Original Release Trailer and Reissue Trailers from 1965, 1973, 1981 and two from 1987

Woohoo! The press release is finally here! Thanks for posting, Luke. This is very detailed and it all sounds really exciting. The radio programs, trailers, and numerous featurettes really show that they are going the extra mile here. The corporate tie-ins should be interesting to see.
However, I'm a little concerned. I've read it once and looked through it several times and I'm not seeing any mention of an audio commentary or anything of the like. I hope that isn't the case!!

Another DVD for the Platinum Line!
I'll be definately picking this long awaited DVD, the picture and sound looks promising and I'm hoping people won't bash it because of the extras, I don't really care about them.
Thanks for posting the Press Release Luke!
(Still no word to be heard about a Lilo and Stitch re-release...) _________________

"Cinderella" press-release! It was about time, hehe! Thanks a lot for posting, Luke.
Well, overall it seems like a great release! It seems all of the laserdisc bonus features are being included (sans the original making of, which is being replaced by a new one), even all of the theatrical trailers (!!!), the demo recordings and radio programs (which were sorely missing from the "Alice in Wonderland" DVD).
The galleries seem very substantial and let's hope the making of featurette follow the other Platinum Edition's pattern, and runs about 40-50 minutes (or more). The "Nine Old Men" featurette is different from the one included on the French 2-disc "Peter Pan", which was a solo essay by John Canemaker. From what is written on the press release, it seems even better than that one (which is probably going to be included on the Platinum Edition of "Peter Pan").
The real surprise is that there is no Virtual Coach Ride to be found, hehehe. Most of the games seem to be reduced to DVD-ROM features this time and they are reduced in number.
Now... the thing that really worries me... it seems there's no commentary track to be found! We know Disney is famous for NOT advertising the commentary tracks on the DVDs, but considering this seems to be a very complete press-release, I don't think they would let it go. Heck, I was even hoping for another Walt's Annotated Story Meetins... all we get are the crappy music videos and that ESPN's fluff.
"Cinderella" may not be one of my Disney favorites (my opinion may change when I watch the gloriously restored version), but I still think it is a very good film and there's a lot to be excited with this DVD release. |

WOW ! I've pre-ordered the gift set already and can't wait to get it. The only extra that seems weird for me is the ESPN thing, just doesn't seem to fit, but maybe I'll change my mind once I see it. I like the fact that it has the stuff for the little kids, and the stuff that the adults will enjoy. _________________ I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.-Louisa May Alcott |

Thanks Luke! The DVD sounds great. I'll probably get myself a copy. The only thing that i'm not liking about the DVD is the games and activities. Dream Room Makeover? Princess Gown Designer? Come on! Cinderella isn't only enjoyed by girls |

I'm curious. I've seen the picture of the gift set, but can't tell what exactly you get with it, besides the dvd. Can someone please tell me? Is it usually worth the price?
The dvd seems to have some nice features, and yeah, they do seem young girl oriented, but these days, with the whole 'Princess' fad, what did you expect? But the do have at least 1 feature for the men, and that's the whole football/basketball/sports thing (i'm kinda hoping they have the under appriciated sport of gymnastics included in at least one of those 'Cinderella' stories), plus the makings of and such, which anyone can enjoy. To me, that's one of the most interesting features, to see how it was created and all put together to become what we all know and love.
Can't wait to get the dvd, so I can get rid of the vhs my parents tried to sell at the garage sale last weekend. (my dad tried to convince my mom that I had it on dvd already and needed to get rid of the vhs copy, so I showed her that it wasn' on dvd yet, not until october, then I will sell the vhs copy) _________________ User formerly known as LizzieMcGuire |

It's about freaking time. I think this release sounds amazing. Its specs are very reminiscent of Snow White's (definitely a good thing) except for the one problem that everyone has mentioned: the lack of a commentary track (?!). I'm really really hoping that Disney is pulling another one of their "oops, did we forget to mention the commentary in our press release?" routines. I'll be seriously ticked off if Cinderella becomes the only Platinum without a commentary track or Walt's Story Meetings feature. It was bad enough with Alice in Wonderland, but I would expect MUCH more from Disney for a film this cherished in their collection. That said, the rest of the features look excellent. A Disney release hasn't had this many trailers since Snow White, I believe. "The Cinderella That Almost Was" sounds REALLY interesting. It's good to see that the galleries will have a slideshow feature ala Bambi because that means commentary snippets on select pieces. I can't wait to see what Alice-related things are shown in the Mary Blair featurette. Like Joe said, I'm glad to see radio shows ported over (unlike a certain other release...). I think this disc has the potential to be the best Walt-era DVD ever produced, just give us a commentary track and/or a Walt's Story Meetings feature. _________________ Kelvin

I don't know what's crazier: "Timon/pumba fan" reading all of that and replying in two minutes or people being unable to distinguish between my critical DVD reviews and a press release. Or perhaps craziest of all, the case of the missing commentary. |
