Rank/Rate the Top-Grossing Films of the Year (1980-2004)

Post by Luke »

No deeper meaning than the title implies, just a fun activity dealing with movies that most people here have probably seen.

Here's a list of the top-grossing films of the year for the past 25 years:

1980: The Empire Strikes Back
1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982: E.T.
1983: Return of the Jedi
1984: Ghostbusters
1985: Back to the Future
1986: Top Gun
1987: Three Men and a Baby
1988: Rain Man
1989: Batman

1990: Home Alone
1991: Terminator 2: Judgment Day
1992: Aladdin
1993: Jurassic Park
1994: Forrest Gump
1995: Toy Story
1996: Independence Day
1997: Titanic
1998: Saving Private Ryan
1999: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

2000: Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas
2001: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
2002: Spider-man
2003: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
2004: Shrek 2

Rank 'em, rate 'em, or both. However you want. And if 25 movie titles are too much for you to copy/paste/edit, then you can do from 1990 to present.

What a neat idea. When you look at the list-you find it somewhat surprising which movies were the most popular during that particular year.

1. (2003) Lord of the Rings-the Return of the King ('nuff said)
2. (1980) The Empire Strikes Back (the best Star Wars movie-by far)
3. (1998) Saving Private Ryan (one of the best war movies ever made)
4. (1982) E.T. (one of Speilberg's best ever, surpassed only by Schinldler's list and Private Ryan)
5. (1981) Raiders of the Lost Ark (Harrison Ford-Speilberg and Lucas = great movie!)
6. (1995) Toy Story (Toy Story 2 is actually better but the very first Pixar film is still excellent!)
7. (1994) Forrest Gump (Life is like a box of chocolates-this one tastes very good!)
8. (1985) Back to the Future (a fun film-even the sequels are quite enjoyable)
9. (1992) Alladin (Robin Williams' genie steals the show)
10. (1989) Batman (Jack Nicholson's Joker steals this show-one of the greatest comic books villains ever put on film)
11. (1984) Ghostbusters (who ya gonna call?)
12. (1993) Jurassic Park (this one was a lot of fun-okay so I have a sick sense of humor!)
13. (2002) Spiderman (would have ranked much higher but Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin was a rather lame villain-Doc Ock was much, much better in the sequel)
14. (1996) Independence Day (still holds up well although the awe factor isn't there anymore)
15. (1986) Top Gun (the funny thing is-I would still love to see a sequel to this movie)
16. (1991) Terminator 2 (I prefer the first and third Terminator films but this one's pretty good too)
17. (2004) Shrek 2 (didn't realize how low this one would rank-but it just shows how many quality films are on this list)
18. (1997) Titanic (this one take a while to get going-but when it does it's very good)
19. (2001) Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (the books are better-by far)
20. (1988) Rain Man (not very impressed with this film-despite it winning many awards)
21. (1983) Return of the Jedi (too many puppets and Ewoks-not enough story-feels some what like a repeat of the original including a Death Star even)
22. (1999) Star Wars-The Phantom Menace (a let-down, after waiting all those years)
23. (1990) Home Alone (fast forward to the end where the kid battles the robbers)
24. (1987) Three Men and a Baby (It's really hard to believe that this movie is even on this list)
25. (2000) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (save yourself the pain-watch the cartoon again)

Is there a reason why we're not doing Revenge of the Sith for 2005? Is it just to do 25 years?
