That's exciting and unexpected. Wonder if this will change the Signature lineup. I can see The Lion King being the debut for a 4K animated classic if that is indeed next in the series and Disney opts for 4K for their animated films. People have been predicting that Beauty and the Beast will get one as well because of the lack of a commentary on the physical disc.

Instead of going 4k I would appreciate if Disney released the rest of their catalogue on 1080p blu-rays. I still mis a lot of their great titles like Make Mine Music, Three Caballeros, Saludos Amigos and classic shorts with Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Silly Symphonies. And how about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? According to the Dumbo restoration experts this film was completely remastered in 2011. We are in 2017 and still no signs of release date of this wonderful classic.

Apparently Disney is planning a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea so I imagine they've been waiting to release the blu-ray until then. Although I imagine it's still many years off if it ends up happening at all.

I really have to wonder how many Disney films will actually end up on 4K. I imagine the Marvel and Star Wars films, as well as new and major tent poll films of the past under the Disney banner might. It's a very awkward time for home entertainment, especially Disney's EH division. They are still producing DVD's, haven't fully taken advantage of Blu-ray, are trying to move people over to digital and now suddenly 4K is a thing? I sense much customer confusion in the year or two ahead.

As long as a possible remake could happen, I imagine DHE is holding off on 20,000 Leagues. That said, I really feel that as time goes on, the company is distancing itself from more and more of it's 20th century past.

Fully agreed. :) However, this move is indeed good news as it indicates Disney retains some interest in physical media. I was among the first (if not the first) to predict that Disney would never get around to releasing the 1940s package films on blu-ray. This slight risk-taking on the company's part gives me hope that maybe those releases just might happen.

I will admit I remain baffled how Disney releases the Mighty Ducks films on blu-ray at this time, yet still holds on to the remaining package films. Is there really a bigger market for three obscure live-action sports films from the early 1990s on the format than for classic Disney animation from the 1940s?

The Mighty Ducks films should have been sold retail on blu-ray five years ago. I think of a lot of major titles from their catalog not yet on Blu-ray and it doesn't make sense. Most if not all of the DMC blu-ray should have been retail releases.

Also, I was told about 5 years ago when I had my DEH contact that EVERY animated classic film would end up on Blu-ray. Of course here we are in 2017 and that is not the case yet. Looking at the four of six package films that have not been released yet, they are probobly the hardest Disney animated films to sell to a modern audience. Still, with Disney Movie Club seemingly switched over to releasing titles on Blu-ray, I don't understand what the hold up is.

A Goofy Movie makes even less seance in why that hasn't been released on Blu-ray yet. Last year would have been perfect to do so.

This is exhausting and frustrating. I'm about halfway through building my Disney Blu-Ray collection - which I was hesitant to even do because of how skimpy most of the releases are - and now this is announced? For a company that doesn't even seem to care about physical releases anymore they sure had no trouble making this decision. If they want people to invest in their films this time around they're really going to have to step it up with the quality of their releases.
