Digimon Discussion

Here's the Digimon Thread to talk about all things digital monsters!

Let me start off by saying my main criticism of the show is the fact that there seems to be the same type of character for each season. You always get the over-enthusiastic leader with goggles, some moody bytch, at least one annoying girl, and a character split between the "darkness" and the light. Other than that I really love this series. Aside from the few typecasts, the characters always make me laugh like Tai, Yolei, or Davis(yes I like Davis) and especially the digimon themselves! Go tokomon!

Now let's hear your thoughts (:

Thanks again for starting this thread 8)

The seasons of Digimon that I saw as a kid (seasons 1-3) still appeal to me in adulthood because they were realistic (outside the whole talking creatures in another dimension thing  ) and not timid about what they depicted. The show was so much more powerful than Pokemon (which I don't mind anyone defending as a fun show, but you have to admit it :P ) and was aimed at a slightly older audience as far as I could see. :shifty:

I'll give my thoughts on the specific seasons when I'm more awake tomorrow

I LOVE the first season. It's one of my favorite shows ever--animated, at least. I believe I watched it around the time I realized I was gay (11 to 13), because I ended up getting sucked into the yaoi community and fanfiction for this show. Taito forever! :P

I hated the second season because they basically disempowered all the old characters. Then none of the new characters (or Digimon) were likable. Then, by the end, everybody and their grandmother has a Digimon.

The third season was dull. I only stuck around because I had watch the show for that long already. I really liked the middle to the end (with Beezlemon and the monster--I can't remember what it's called because it's been so long). Still, very bizarre and I didn't really like it.

I haven't watch the other seasons, but I've seen bits of the 5th one and it seemed really dumbed down.

^You're gay? How funny, I always knew I was... "different" but I didn't know there was a word for it until I was 11 when everyone and their mother said 'gay' in middle school.

I'm surprised you guys didn't like the second season as much. I loved the whole alternative armor and DNA digivolutions. I hated Cody but I liked every one else.. actually no Kari was annoying. And I liked that characters from season 1 were in this one too whereas the other seasons had only their cast.

Season 3 is definitely my least favorite of the series (I havent seen the 5th one whatsoever).. but I liked the idea of those 12 Chinese zodiac villians. I think season three had the weakest/unlikable characters, in fact the digimon where really the save. The card enhancements were neat too (:

I liked season 2, although I hated Daisuke and Miyako. I thought it was really unfair that the former took seniority away from Takeru and Hikari. I found the latter annoying as well, but I didn't feel the same level of ire towards her because she respected everyone in the group except for the understandable omission of Daisuke. Why did you feel the way you did about the characters? I'm not bashing you, I'm honestly interested :)

+1 :thumb:

I thought season 2 had a very cool feel to it 8)

As for season 3, I thought it had solid writing, but it was so gloomy and I struggled with Digimon existing as it does for us.

I adored the epilogue, but I did think that Taichi, Yamato and Sora were given ill fitting careers.

Yeah, I agree about the Zodiac characters. I also liked the god characters they introduced in the second season (Azulumon was the one in the sky, right?).

Actually, I don’t find the 2nd season unbearable, but I was dissatisfied with a lot of it. I did like that they brought Myotismon back at the end. Plus, I think they did some great things at the end with Mummymon and Arukenimon. I also liked Ken and that whole storyline. But, like I said, the characters were less interesting. Kari was always annoying, but more so as a teenager. TK and Yolei were both majorly annoying, too. Kodi was blah, but what crazy person came up with the idea to have one of the few main Digimon be an armadillo?! Ugh. That, on top of Hawkmon… Oi. I actually liked Daisuke/Davis alright, even though he’s pretty unpopular.

I liked the 1st series’ characters’ much better. The only one there I didn’t like was Sora. Plus, Mimi and Palmon were always my favorites and they got the least screen time of all the original characters in season 2. I just felt like the first series was very well-paced. When the characters returned to the digital world to find the Dark Masters…I loved those episodes! So much tension and drama; it was amazing. And the Apocalymon episode was an amazing finale to all of that. I only wish all the digimon in that first season had went Mega. I always wanted to see Rosemon. :P

Season 3 was just cold to me. I liked Takato, Henry, Beezlemon, and Renamon, but nobody else. Most of it was tedious and it seemed to take forever for me to get into it at all (which was around the time they finally went to the digital world). So, yeah, that one never did much for me.

Sorry it took me so long to reply it got really busy 'round here!

I didn't really care for Kari, Cody, Matt etc because I didn't like their moods. I never warmed up to their moody/bitchy characters. I liked Davis, Tai because they were positive and kept the team going.. Although this was when I was 9 or 10 and I haven't seen the series since so my opinions will probably be different if I rewatch it. Lol

Season 3 was really cold. Everyone was all mad over something. The digimon were the only happy ones and they were left in hiding. The sun never came out cry cry cry. The villains were the most interesting part for me this season. The characters were:

Don't worry about the time between replies. Things in your offline life can often keep you busy.

I can understand preferring the more optimistic characters, but, as you say, your views might very well change if you watch it again. Mine did. Seeing the Japanese version could be interesting in this respect. I hated Cody, but when I saw him as Iori I liked him much more because he didn't have that scratchy and annoying "I know better than everyone else" voice.

Oh yeah Cody's voice was bad! I didn't like that either lol I loved Armadillomon too! He was interesting. His baby form was hyper and then he was calm as a rookie haha and he turned into a submarine! So cool :D

Season one was the best season for me partly because it had such great villains. You start off great with Devimon, then you get a pretty good Myotismon arc before wrapping up with the Dark Masters. I think the Dark Masters arc felt a bit rushed when I originally watched it, they would defeat one every second or third episode?

 It's been a while so I can't remember.

Season 2 was interesting, it took a while for me to warm up to it. Having a human kid as the villain for the first chunk was interesting since it made it a lot harder for them to beat him. Usually they just learn how to digivolve to Champion and then destroy the evil digimon, but in this case it was a lot harder.

Does anyone else still have their Digimon cards laying about?

I never saw this thread before, but I loved Digimon growing up. I like everyone else grew up with the dumbed down American dub of the show. I had the toys, the cards. I was that weird kid in school who liked both it & Pokemon. Digimon definitely has a better Anime though. My version of choice is the original Japanese version these days. You all should check it out as you'll see everything Saban didn't want you to see plus a more intelligent sounding script.

The first season of Digimon (Digimon Adventure from here on in) is now on DVD and has been since October. Season 2 (Digimon Adventure 02 from here on in) will be on DVD on March 26th.

My overall opinion of each series:

Digimon Adventure: This series was what started my loved of the show. I even remember the first episode I ever saw. It was Episode 19: Nanomon/Datamon Of The Labrynth! (Prisoner Of The Pyramid in the English dub). At first I hated it, but then when Fox Family (now ABC Family) started showing reruns from the beginning I loved it. To this day my favorite episodes are Episode 37: All Perfect Levels/Ultimate Levels Advance! Glittering Angewomon!! (Wizardmon's Gift in the English dub) & Episode 52: The Holy Swordsman! HolyAngemon/MagnaAngemon (Piedmon's Last Jest in the English dub). My favorite characters are Takeru/T.K. & Patamon. I loved that Takeru's character grew from a scared child to a braver child as the series progressed and Patamon was adorable plus he became a badass once he evolved/Digivolved into Angemon.

Digimon Adventure 02: I really love this series despite its plotholes. I watched all 50 episodes on their original Fox Kids airings. I think someone said Daisuke/Davis was annoying? His annoyance was all dub added. He's not too bad in the original. Miyako/Yolei fared the same way. I think most people hated Iori/Cody because of his dub voice which sounds like a 9-year old chain smoker. Listen to the Japanese voice he sounds normal there. My favorite of the 4 new Chosen Children/Digidestined is Ken. We got to see him go through a complete 180. I thought he was sinister as the Digimon Kaiser/Emperor and kind once he became good plus the voice of Romi Park made it all better. I hate the ending though.

Digimon Tamers/Season 3: This was where I stopped watching it as a kid. I felt it was way too dark. Having now watched all 51 episodes that opinion hasn't changed, but there are a few likable characters like Guilmon & Terriermon. My favorite characters are Renamon & Impmon due to his evolution into Beelzebumon/Beelzemon. Terriermon is funny with his clever remarks though. The Devas were a cool concept as was the kids fusing with their Digimon which was later enhanced in the next series (more on that in the next paragraph). The finale was good.

Digimon Frontier/Season 4: This series gets so much hate, and I don't see why. It has a great story. I am glad that the writers continued the whole kids becoming Digimon concept which was introduced in the 2nd half of Tamers. I like the bond between Takuya & Tomoki/Tommy. Cherubimon was an excellent villain. We get to see some old Digimon like Gabumon again. The last fight between Susannomon & Lucemon was excellent as was Ryusei Nakao's performance as Lucemon Falldown Mode. The ending was very satisfying and the best of any of them. To me this is the best series since the first 2 as I lump them together because of them being 1 story pretty much.

Digimon Savers/Data Squad/Season 5 & Digimon Xros Wars/Fusion/Season 6: I have not seen, so I have no opinion.

The Japanese music is awesome. Takanori Arisawa (RIP) composed the first 4 series, and his music like in Sailor Moon was excellent. All the vocal songs are excellent too. My favorites are Brave Heart (Adventure/02 Evolution song), Break Up! (02 Armor Evolution song), EVO (Tamers Evolution song), One Vision (Tamers Matrix Evolution Biomerging song), With The Will (Frontier Evolution song), Salamander (Takuya's character song and plays in episode 18 of Frontier and instrumental versions play in Episodes 36 & 37.) & Say Yes (Tomoki's character song which plays in Episode 7 of Frontier.)
Disney is awesome, and was the biggest part of my childhood.

On season 1--Piedman's Last Jest was one of my favorite episodes, too! Angemon and MagnaAngemon were awesome, even if Patamon was kind of a loser. Most of the episodes when they come back to the digital world after Miyotismon are amazing, full of tension. I kind of like the one where Mimi is a princess, too, for the laughs. I used to re-watch Flower Power over and over just to see the Lilymon transformation, even though that episode isn't a favorite. I remember crying and crying at the last episode. This was before I even knew about season 2, so I really thought they'd never see each other again (and I'd never see these characters again).

Season 3--Just to add on to what I've said before: I absolutely hated Terriermon. I always thought he was a real prick to everyone, and I wanted him to die. Renamon and Beezlemon were my favorites, too, though I was so shocked when I found out Renamon is male (unlike in the dub). It seems weird for a female character to be with a male Digimon... But maybe it's because she has such a "masculine" personality that her Digimon is a boy? There were a couple boys that season who should've had girl Digimon then.

I've seen bits and pieces of season 4 and 5, but I didn't like anything about 5 so I doubt I'll ever watch it all the way through. I would like to buy season 4 to watch for myself once it comes out, since I've heard good things about it. I wish the show would have a new season that's popular in the US, but I doubt that'll happen.

Renamon is female in Japanese. Her voice actress is female. The only version where Renamon is male is the German dub unless that's the version you saw.

Digimon Fusion (the sixth series of Digimon) will be aired on Nickelodeon later this year--no set date yet. :D

http://www.nickandmore.com/2013/02/05/s ... on-fusion/

I'll be very interested to see this when it airs. I've read a little about the plot via Wikipedia, but I would like to see it for myself. I hope the dub isn't too bad.

Nice. I will have to try and record it, so that I can see what it is like.

I'm hoping Saban will get around to releasing DVD (Or even Blu) sets for the seasons eventually. Wouldn't mind picking up the first two seasons for sure, since I remember/enjoyed them the most.

Semi-Related note. I recently came across my old Pokemon 'sticker book' which was basically a little book with empty card sleeves in it. I remember my cousin and I both bought one when we were young at a little japanese store, and every time we went there with my Aunt, and our Grandma we would get a bunch of Digimon stickers. Still have them all, plus the few Pokemon ones :D Quite glad I didn't lose that in all the times I've moved around.

Wow. That's fast. :o So I'm guessing season 4 will be out around September (or at least before the end of the year)?

Not the same thing, but I also had a notebook with those empty card sleeves that I used when I collected trading cards. I had/have more Pokemon cards, even though I liked Digimon most.

Season One is out? I haven't seen it at all in the stores up here. Not sure if that's just our stores having bad variety, or if it just never got a release in Canada?

Divinity, I still have all of my old Digimon cards as well, both the game you play against friends and the ones that were more collectible. Still have quite a few of the old Pokemon ones as well, though I thinned out all of the extras.

The Season releases I believe are online exclusives. However They have smaller sets available right now, but so far only the first 21 episodes of Season 1 are available. The 2nd set for it comes out on the 26th of this month. My suggestion is to get the full sets as it's a much better deal.

Re: The Digimon Discussion

Apparently, they're making a sequel series to Digimon Adventure called Digimon Adventure tri. Go here for a few pictures for how the characters will look.

Personally, I'm really happy this is happening! DA was the only season/cast I ever fully loved. Plus, nostalgia. <3 I just hope they can get most of the same voice actors back.
