First impression as a whole collection is there is a lot of wasted money been spent on duplication. When I upgrade, I trade or sell the copy I am upgrading from.
You have some pretty nice titles, but I don't see any of the "good" horror films of the classic era nor from the 60's or 70's.
Overall you have the 'roots' of what could be a very nice collection of films.

The only way to watch movies - Original Aspect Ratio!!!!
I LOVE my Blu-Ray Disc Player!

I wish I could call myself a collector but... Anyway, I upgrade as much for the special features as anything else (though, I really need to get the new Piranha Widescreen special edition because I still have - and will NEVER trade in or sell - the old New Horizons / Concorde 20th Anniversary Edition). Which of course makes the Dark Sky 2-Disc of Texas Chainsaw Massacre such an amazing buy because they really give you everything- a far superior transfer of the movie to the 1998 Pioneer Special Edition plus a ton of bonuses on the 2nd disc. But you do lose stuff from the previous disc. Not much, if I'm remember correctly. But there are several photos from the gallery that aren't recycled. I do believe the same is true of Anchor Bay / Starz's re-release of Hellraiser. Not only do you get fewer photos on the 20th Anniversary Edition as opposed to the 2000 THX Edition, but they're also sized smaller. There's a stinking border around them. And sometimes, there's nothing better than a good photo gallery. (Some of my favorites: The Evil Dead - 2002 THX DVD, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Phantasm - 1999 MGM Special Edition)dvdjunkie wrote:First impression as a whole collection is there is a lot of wasted money been spent on duplication. It's also outright stupid to, for example, toss your old DVD's of (especially) Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street since the newest editions (and the ones sadly transfered to Blu-Ray) are not the right versions of the movie. Halloween's Blu-Ray is the 2003 transfer which is not color-coded correctly. The trademark blue light of the movie is largely missing. I actually have screencaps ready to show right now (I just have to look them up).
The 1999 DVD:
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/ ... 8-11sm.jpg" width="390" height="175" border="0">
2003 DVD:

As for Nightmare on Elm Street, you are aware that anywhere from 5 to 7 different audio cues are completely removed from the movie for absolutely no reason aren't you? On the 2006 "Infinifilm" Edition? Which is extra sad because... that version of the movie is actually the correct color timed version. The 1999 DVD, while completely correct audio-wise, brightened up a LOT of scenes that were supposed to be extremely dark. So... why the heck not have 2 DVD's so you can choose to watch whichever version you prefer? (I choose the 1999 DVD every time because I canNOT watch the movie without the original sting cues.)
Then there's Friday the 13th. While the 2009 Deluxe Edition is finally, at long last, the full uncut version... it's also been tampered with in a truly shocking way. The studio actually hacked off 10% of the entire original negative during transfer. Here's a shot that shows you how much of the movie is missing in every single shot: http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/a-m/f ... _compl.jpg . That's a shot of the 1999 transfer with a box to show you where the 2009 DVD cuts off the edges. It's pretty WHAT THE HOLY HELL?!?!?!-inducing. But I believe they probably did it because the Uncut footage they spliced into the theatrical print wasn't the full size of the original negative.
(More later... probably.)

Now, for something near and dear to my heart... the Phantasm DVD's. One lucky day back in late spring of 2002 (when I was still in high school), I walked into a Coconuts store with my father and, out of the blue, he just said- get a couple DVD's. I bought the Gremlins Special Edition and the MGM 1999 Special Edition disc of Phantasm. And, let me tell you, there are few gifts that keep on giving like that Phantasm disc. Anchor Bay / Starz re-issued it in 2007 with the U.K. documentary / featurette snippets totaling a little under 40 minutes. But, to get those, they decided to toss a few bonuses from the '99 disc.
Anchor Bay's 2007 Extra's Menu:

And, unless you count the "Phantasm III trailer" as a bonus for the first film (which I certainly do not), the 2 new bonuses (and they were only new to the U.S. - the U.K. had them for several years if I have my facts right) are "Phantasmagoria" and "Actors Having a Ball."
MGM's 1999 Extras Menu (split into 2 parts):

So... what are you missing? For any fan of the film, you can't miss out on the extras Anchor Bay kicked to the curb. Among them:

This deleted scene

The nearly 4 minute Australian promo for the film, which was titled "The Never Dead" over there

Angus Scrimm's awesome introduction to the film (nearly 2 minutes)

The choice to hear the original English mono soundtrack, which was the film's theatrical audio (however, you'll notice Anchor Bay has never cheated Halloween out of its' original mono track- thankfully)

Totaling WELL over 10 minutes, you're also missing all the original audio features. 2 songs and 4 radio spots. 2 of the radio spots are just rehashes of the TV spots, but the other 2... MAN are they INCREDIBLE!!! Like the radio spots for Suspira- you are missing out big time not having those. They're indescribable. It's also amazing to have the actual recorded version of Bill Thornbury's song and the disco version of the movie's theme (which is actually on YouTube in 3 different copies- but still).
And the movie's photo gallery- which is remarkably expansive. Divided into 4 different sections, there's just about nothing spared for the movie's fans.
This is a must-have DVD. And you have no idea what you're missing by trading it up. Although, admittedly, the picture quality gets a big boost on the 2007 DVD with it finally being anamorphic and all. I actually went through a few of my different horror DVD's yesterday evening and BOY am I glad I didn't have a widescreen TV back in the 90's when DVDs like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tenebre and Phenomena, Scream, and Phantasm were first being released. As a matter of fact... Why not do some screen comparisons?
1999 DVD vs 2007 DVD on a Widescreen:

Kinda shocking though is that there's more information on the top and bottom of the 1999 disc. But with a huge black border all the way around.
