Does anybody else think about interesting Disney character pairings, and/ or does anybody else relate Disney movies to other movies?
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR "SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS", "CINDERELLA", "THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME", "MAN OF LA MANCHA", AND "OTHELLO"!
* Awhile back, I began crushing on Doc, and I wondered why HE couldn't have been paired up with Snow White at the end of the movie. THEN I realized that GRUMPY was even cooler than Doc, and I began crushing on HIM, and I wondered why HE couldn't have been paired up with Snow White at the end of the movie. Of course, I plead guilty to also being somewhat influenced by Cascada songs, etc., when I was formulating my ideas!
* A few years ago, I re-watched "Cinderella", decided that The Grand Duke was totally hot, and wrote some notes about why HE deserved to be Cinderella's beloved! Again, I was also somewhat influenced by Cascada...and by an article that was written by a professor. I was actually able to discuss my ideas with her; I feel fortunate to have been able to communicate with her right before school started again...
* I am a Disney enthusiast AND a musical theatre enthusiast, and a Shakespeare enthusiast, so I wrote a few notes when I realized that "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Man of La Mancha" (1972), and "Othello" (1995) had total similarities to each other...I also kept calling Esmeralda "Aldonza" (?) by mistake...and vice versa (?) (I can't remember...), due to the similarities of the characters...
Both "THoND" and "MoLM" feature narrators. In both musicals, the male protagonist is an outcast, who gains SOME form of his ultimate dream by the end of the movie in which he stars; Quasimodo wants to be accepted, but his face scares people, and Don Quixote is labeled "Insane"...Quasimodo becomes the town hero, and Don Quixote, although driven to a tragic death, goes out believing that good will triumph. Both movies feature a dark-haired heroine, who is branded an easy woman, and who is desired both by the outcast (pure love), and by the villain (lustful, and sometimes violent desire); Esmeralda is branded a slut by Frollo, who will burn her unless he is allowed to dominate her, and Aldonza is a literal slut who wishes to better herself, but who is raped by her main "customer" right after she's begun to do so. Both leading ladies end up with guys other than the outcasts; Esmeralda becomes Phoebus' fiance, and Aldonza/ Dulcinea and Sancho end up with each other, even though they part ways...
The characters from "Othello" can be related to the characters from the other two movies, too. Othello is something of an "outsider" because he is labeled as "The Moor of Venice"; people respect him, but his position is precarious, because Iago is lurking, ready to ruin Othello's calm and cool status. Desdemona is portrayed as a dark-haired, young, innocent maiden, whom Iago falsely makes out to look like a total cheater. It's ultimately Othello who punishes Desdemona, but, of course, it's the villain, Iago, who puts into Othello's head the general idea that Desdemona is a "bad girl". Desdemona's ex boyfriend, Cassio, acts as a sort of Phoebus/ Sancho character, trying to figure everything out, trying to do what's right, etc. Of course, at the end of the play, Cassio has to mourn the loss of both Desdemona AND Othello!
Thank you in advance for your replies.
