You know the drill, but just for the hell- here's the old starter post:
This is just a fun type thread and you don't have to think real hard, follow any specific rules to the letter, or get involved in a debate if you don't want to.
The idea: try to nominate the most memorable songs that either defined a spirit of the time it was made, were the best example of that kind of music, became an anthem for you or maybe your parents if they're older (like mine), or that you love a lot that really speak to you.
The only real rule: try to narrow down the amount of songs for one artist or band. Try to pick their best and try not to pick more than 2 songs from the same album.
Any and every kind of music is welcome.

I could list many songs, but the few ones that I embed below, are the ones that I really, truly, deeply care about, because I think they're not only the most memorable, but also that they need to be heard by as many people as possible because there's so much importance to them.
Jackson Browne - Lives in the balance
From the album of the same title, this is a chilling and mind-blowing political song that asks the listener very basic questions about the world we live in. Beginning as a critique of the Reagan/Bush-administration's policies in Latin-America (though he never gets specific), the song quickly evolves into a wider critique of 'the system'. For example, he sings: "They sell us the president the same way/ they sell us our clothes and our cars/ They sell us everything from youth to religion/ the same way they sell us our wars". Interestingly, the song is still highly relevant today.

R.E.M. - Welcome to the Occupation
From their 1987 album Document, this song is a biting critique of the Reagan/Bush-administration's foreign policy in Latin-America. Referring to the interventions in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras (where tens of thousands of people died in bloody civil wars), they sing: "Fire on the hemisphere, below"...

R.E.M. - Exhuming McCarthy
From the same album, 'Exhuming McCarthy' makes an explicit parallel between the red-baiting of Joe McCarthy's time and the strengthening of the sense of American exceptionalism during the Reagan era, especially the Iran-Contra affair. Starting with the click-clack of a typewriter, it also includes a sound clip of Joseph Welch's rebuke of McCarthy from the Army-McCarthy Hearings: "Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator.... You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Sting- They dance alone
I don't cry often, and I don't cry quickly. But when I heard this song for the first time, I couldn't stop crying. It hit me like few songs ever have. I still get that same feeling whenever I listen to it. 'They dance alone' is a reference to the opponents of the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. The regime had tens of thousands of innocent people arrested, tortured and 'having them disappear' (meaning murdered). Protests against this would lead to the military opening fire at the crowds. But, with the whole world watching Chile, the mothers and wives of their missing sons and husbands found a way to protest in a way even Pinochet could not legitimize using force against: dancing in the streets with the portraits of their missing loved ones.

Bob Dylan - Jokerman
After making two gospel albums filled with explicit religious songs (Dylan had converted to born-again christianity) that alienated him from both fans and general public, he came back in 1983 (albeit shortly) with 'Jokerman'. A return to the magnificent lyrical beauty of the 1960's, this was his best song in years, and for years to come. The complexity of the lyrics still amazes me; it's still a cryptic puzzle I'm cracking on.
Bob Dylan - Blind Willie McTell
Only became known through bootlegs circulating amongst fans, this is both a tribute to the late legendary blues artist, and a tragic tale about the history and fate of African-Americans in the US. (Again, a return in topic to the 1960's.) Had Dylan released this song after 'Jokerman', his staying power in the 1980's may have lasted a little longer.
Also:
Alannah Myles- Black Velvet
Alphaville- Forever young
Bangles- Eternal flame
Billy Joel- We didn't start the fire
Bob Seger- Against the wind

Crowded House- Don't dream is over

Eddy Grant- Gimme hope, Johanna
Europe- The final countdown

Heart- Alone

John Hiatt- Have a little faith in me
Madness- Our house
Madonna- Like a virgin
Madonna- Material girl
Michael Jackson- Beat it
Neil Young- Rockin' in the free world
