Dinosaur a "Classic"?

Without sparking a debate over the term "Disney Animated Classic", that phrase is mostly reserved exclusively for films produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation (now known as Walt Disney Animation Studios). And at some point, marketing decided to number these films and brand them as classics, so when films like "Pocahontas" were released, they were advertised as "Disney's (insert number here) Animated Classic."

As many of you know, Dinosaur was not technically animated by feature animation, but combined Disney's special effects department (Dream Quest Images) with WDFA's CGI unit to create Disney's Secret Lab which worked on the film. On top of that, Dinosaur used mostly live action backgrounds with CGI characters.

I could be wrong, but Ultimate Disney's list of animated classics (http://www.ultimatedisney.com/ultimateclassics.htm currently lists Dinsoaur as the 39th classic and I don't remember it ever being on the list until now. It was always included in "Other Animation" and in fact, is still on that list (http://www.ultimatedisney.com/ultimateanimated.htm).

Has Dinosaur always been part of the line of classics? Or was it more recently thrown in so that marketing could say the Rapunzel is the 50th?

Yeah, this film clearly deserves to be in the CG ranks, with Toy Story and A Bug's Life, etc.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has a website now that lists all of the Animated Classics. What is their take on it? I suppose they would be the final word on what is 'canon'. Every one else can have their own opinion

Dinosaur is indeed listed.

Laz mentioned it being in the same ranks as Pixar films, but Pixar films are in a different rank than the WDFA films. Maybe one could argue that Dinosaur should be in the same ranks as Valiant and The Wild...

I know that I mentioned this in another thread, but I am happy that Dinosaur is listed as an Animated Classic. I love the film...that's basically why I'm happy...! All in all, though, when it comes down to it, it's just a list. As other people have mentioned elsewhere, just because a movie is on Disney's official DAC list doesn't mean that every film is a classic in their heart.

I read somewhere awhile back that it was originally supposed to have been considered a DAC but the box office numbers were so bad that they declined it from the list. Now it's back on it, officially. This makes me happy

If they say it is then I'm with them. I'm glad they put it on there. It was a good movie and I think deserving of being on the DAC list. I'm actually going to be buying the 2-Disc collector's edition soon..

If you have a Blu-ray player I would recommend getting the Blu-ray. The picture is so vibrant!

No. Disney revised the "canon" last year and included Dinosaur. They may call it canon, but I still don't. And the term "Disney Animated Classic" is for marketing more than prestige anyway.

yeah, we can debate all we want, but if the studio that made it says it is #39, that is the final word on it. Well technically, the studio that made it (The Secret Lab) no longer exists. But the folks working on it were all WDAS employees anyway, so it's all the same.

The shutting down of TSL is probaply not the only reason Dinosaur was adopted by WDAS. With Dinosaur in the canon, Rapunzel will be #50.

Marketing wise, it's brilliant.

But it's a CGI film. It should always go with CGI films. Always. It's just the right thing to do.

I never have and never will consider it part of Disney's animated classic canon. It may have been made by crew members who've done other WDAS features, but the fact that remains that this was done in the "Secret Lab," not any actual WDAS building. Nevermind the fact that the backgrounds are live-action...

I consider it an "other" animated Disney film ala A Goofy Movie or James and the Giant Peach. I think Disney's only placing it in the canon list to help bolster its reputation among us die-hard Disney fans.

Iv always really enjoyed the movie Dinosaur!! Its visually entertaining and the music soundtrack is very beautiful and powerful!!! This is the first movie I watched when I first got my surround sound system and OMG.....I got goosebumps. It enhansed the drama in the soundtrack even more and the feeling of Dinosaurs running around the room was just as sweet. lol Anyway I love this movie!

At least their not making The Nightmare Before Christmas part of the canon. As for Dinosaur, I'm not counting it, simply because it was not produced by the WDAS, which should be the only requirement for the canon. (I'm pretty sure I'm quoting someone here hehe)

Lazario, we have three CGI films in the canon, Chicken Little/Meet The Robinsons/BOLT. The reason why the Pixar films aren't in the canon is because they are PIXAR films. They weren't produced by the same animation studio that all the other classics were.

I don't really count it either, and probably never will despite what some list from Disney says. I mean if you think about it these are (most likely) the same people saying Sunflower doesn't exist so it's hard to take them seriously.

*Note* I don't want to start some Sunflower debate in here just merely pointing out that Disney says a lot of things that aren't really true or things that are just plain stupid.

Same here, don't care for it anymore, or the fact that CTX was renamed for it.
