PETER PAN - 3 releases - 4th on the way *graphics heavy*

Post by drsd2kill »

Hey guys and gals!

I tracked down the 1991 CAV Laserdisc release of PETER PAN (which I owned long ago) and made some screenshots. I also made screenshots from the 1998 CAV Laserdisc (same transfer used for the 1999 DVD) and 2002 Special Edition DVD. The 1991 release did not contain the RKO card or music that accompanied it, but the 1998 and 2002 releases did. The images are labeled according to the following key:

A = 1991 Laserdisc release [1990 on VHS]
B = 1998 Laserdisc release [1999 on DVD]
C = 2002 DVD release

When the 2007 DVD is released, I'll make screen captures of it as well. I tried to get as close to the exact frame in each version as I could. Note how the brushstrokes (an animation flaw) from Tinker Bell's skirt are erased on all but the original video release.

1998 Laserdisc/1999 DVD

Here are a few interesting comparisons (1991/1998 & 1999/2002)

The color seems the best and most accurate (check out fleshtones) in the 1991 release, but the images keeps getting sharper as the releases go on. I wonder what the 2007 DVD will bring.

Captures

Post by drsd2kill »

I use a program called VLC. It's free to download and is great for grabbing frames from DVD's, albeit not always very specific. It's hard for me to get exact frames, so some are a bit off. I believe they have versions for Mac as well as Windows XP for free download. Check www.videohelp.com.

For the Laserdisc images, I transfer the Laserdisc to DVD doing no correction for contrast, color, etc. Then I capture them using VLC.

In a few weeks, I'll update this post to include captures from the same frames in the 2007 PETER PAN DVD.

"Too much color"? Remember this was a three-strip Technicolor film. I think colorwise the 1991 Laserdisc was the most accurate. We'll have to wait and see how the 2007 DVD looks in comparison. It's too bad that Laserdisc was so soft. Each "restoration" gets sharper and sharper, that's undeniable, but look how crappy some lighter colors get, such as fleshtones, as the years go on.

clarity vs. color

Post by drsd2kill »

Can we sometimes have TOO much clarity? Who looks good with a magnifying glass up to their face in florescent light? :-) I think with animation - and the size of the actual canvas - there is a place where you're going to reach the point of diminishing returns. Color is SO important to these films, and it looks so much like they are changing things.

BTW - I posted at the Home Theater Forum, and there are some interesting comments from that site as well as a sneak peak at some CINDERELLA pics.

For some reason I really like all the first pics of tinkerbell (out of the 3 that you compare). She kind of loses her sparkle (Magic). And for the most part I think I like the softness of the 2nd out of the 3 comparsions sometimes the 3rd one. It will be interesting to see what they did for the new one (2007).

The 1990 video (AKA the 1991 Laserdisc) is the only version of the movie that I have. I'll wager that the 2007 DVD will feature the same quality as the 2002 release. That's just me, though...

I prefer the brush strokes. Why do you guys think the lines look thinner?

I checked my platinum dvd and the strokes are in fact gone. The good thing is that the lines aren't thin. The lines look just like the pic with the brush strokes. In the pic comparing the the line quality; it looks as if they traced tinker bell with the paint program found in a computer.

Yep! So does the "Alice in Wonderland" DVD had the same RKO card. "The Three Caballeros", "Make Mine Music", "Fun and Fancy Free" and "Melody Time" and "The Reluctant Dragon" also has the RKO logo as well.

That was on right after that same old 1985 logo with a blue castle on it.

I also have the original VHS tape from 1989 but it does have the same old logo with a rare powdered white castle on it, but it has no RKO logo on it. The RKO logo was completely cut off on the first VHS "Black Diamond" release. "Peter Pan" was the last animated feature to use the RKO logo. RKO continued its Disney shorts until 1955 when Walt formed a company called Buena Vista Film Distribution, Inc. Walt's distribution RKO had been around since "Snow White" and the rest of the shorts since 1937. That was 18 years already Walt had his distribution with RKO.

Two corrections for musicradio77:

1. Buena Vista started in 1953 (with the release of "The Living Desert"), not 1955.

2. The Classics edition of "Peter Pan" was released in 1990, not 1989.

Also, you're missing a few more titles... "Dumbo" and "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" also have the RKO logo.

And I have two questions...

1. What do the RKO logos for "Make Mine Music" and "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" look like? And does the RKO logo on "Make Mine Music" have the text "Distributed by RKO Radio Pictures, Inc." underneath the logo??

2. Does "Saludos Amigos" have its RKO logo as well?

I agree with PixarFan2006. If someone could put up the PE of Peter Pan that would be great. I would really like to see how they restored it.

Thanks. :)

I'm very curious about the difference in screencaps between the 2002 dvd and the 2007 dvd.

Pinocchio (At least the R2 version, remastered by Lowry) has the RKO title card as well.
