How do you collect your DVDs?

Post by Escapay »

Strange title, I'm sure, so let me explain.

The type of collectors:

0. The Really Normal People - "I don't have time to watch TV, much less buy a DVD and a player for it just to watch it on TV when I can catch it later on HBO or something. So I don't need DVDs since I can catch it on TV. I don't even remember the last time I watched TV actually..."

1. The Normal People - "I'm just a working-class parent of two who doesn't have much time for myself what with a job and my spouse and kids. If I remember what movies are and I see one that I particularly like, I'll pick it up...eventually. At last count, I only needed to remove my left shoe in order to count to 15, which is how many DVDs we have in our house."

2. The Limited Collector - "I only like certain movies. Mainly (insert genre), I really only like those kinds of movies, and don't care to own any other kind. I've got probably 20 titles right now, simply because movies aren't my life."

3. The Frugal Collector - "I love all types of movies, and if I see a movie that interests me, I'll make sure I have it. I don't care much for extra discs, those usually cost money. So long as I have the movie in my home, I'm happy. Right now, I've got between 25 to 50 movies."

4. The Hybrid Collector - "I love all types of movies, but some of them aren't as important to me as others. A great movie like The Sound of Music I'll get the two-disc edition of, but I can do with the regular single-disc version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's the movie that counts, so I only get the tricked-out multi disc editions if I really really like the movie. I've got probably 50 regular editions of movies, and maybe 10 or 15 special editions."

5. The Average Collector - "I love all types of movies, and I also like to at least have a few bonus features that are about the movies. Bonus features are important, but not as important as the movie itself. But if given the choice between a movie-only or a movie-with-bonus features DVD, I'll pick the latter. I've got about 100 movies to my name, many of them multi-disc."

5 1/2. The Average Disney Collector - "I'm the Average Collector, but also a Completist when it comes to anything Disney DVD related! All 44 Animated Classics will soon be mine! Mine, all mine!"

6. The Completist - "I love all types of movies, especially franchises. But even if there are lesser movies in a franchise, I'll buy them, simply because I like to have a complete collection. For example, I've got every movie with the name National Lampoon on it, even though the recent ones are all clunkers. It's not necessarily about the movie, it's about the line and about the DVD. I have probably 150 to 200 movies, though I probably only watch and appreciate 26 of them."

7. The Aficionado - "If I see a movie, and it amused or entertained me even the slightest bit, I'll make sure it's in my collection just in case I want to watch it. Sure, I've got my usual favorites, but I also collect movies with the intent of running a mini-DVD-rental store for my friends and relatives. I've got probably 300 or so movies, though I have probably seen only 115 of them more than once since I bought it."

8. The Big Spender - "I'm the Aficionado on steroids. I need every edition possible, every movie ever made, by every company that's released it. It's all about the bragging rights! Who else on my street can say that they've got every season of every Star Trek show ever aired, or every movie that Audrey Hepburn was in or every entry in the Criterion Collection? I stopped counting how many I had when I reached the 1000 mark." (this is not a jab at dvdjunkie or ultimatefilmfan, they fall under the Aficionado category, despite having large collections).

9. The Slipcover Fanatic - "I don't care for the movies, just the slipcovers. If a movie doesn't have a slipcover and originally came with a slipcover, I'm gonna hunt that slipcover down until I find it, and stare at it for hours on end. Oh yeah, and I may slip that circular disc into my player and see what the movie is all about."

10. The favorite customer at BestBuy - "Everyone at BestBuy knows me by name since I have a weekly appointment there every Tuesday. My income goes mainly to bills, food, gas, and DVDs. Everything else someone else can buy for me on my birthday or for Christmas. I've got clothes, and until they burn in a fire, I don't need any more. I've got furniture, and until they burn in a fire, I don't need any more. I've got a home theater system, and until it burns in a fire, I don't need another."

11. The Coaster Collector - "I've invested so much into DVDs that I've collected all there is to collect and I don't even like to watch them anymore, so now I have a very expensive collection of coasters and frisbees..."

I like to think that I'm an Average Collector. At last count, I had over 350 DVDs, though many of them are single-disc editions of movies I enjoy, while my favorites are in the better editions. Of course, there are some exceptions, as some movies have wonderful single-disc editions (Newsies and Superman the Movie come to mind).

Cool labels! I used to be #2, then I mostly became #6 or 7, and now, though the Disney DVDs regularly flow in, I only have the time and money to stay #3 - The Frugal Collector.

Kind of like this guy <img src="http://www.outofthefryingpan.com/cookbo ... ourmet.jpg">, but without the whole sexual abuse settlements.

I still care a great deal about presentation and bonus features, but the list of titles to double-dip has grown long enough for me to evaluate on a case-by-case basis. I do look forward to a time when I can leisurely discover new and old movies and keep on top of non-Disney DVDs as well as I used to be able to, but who knows when that will happen.

Hmm - FG died last year? I don't think I knew that.

Now that I look at the descriptions, I'm definitely #5 - The Average Collector, although I "only" have about 30 DVDs at the moment. The movie is very important to me, of course, but I'm also interested in the making-of documents and other bonus material the DVDs hold, so I tend to buy 2-disc editions if they are available.

EDIT: Now that there was the addition to the list, I'll have to give a new answer. According to the revised list, I'm #5½ - The Average Disney Collector. So everything what I said before in this post is true, but I'm a completist in that sense that I also want to add all the 44 classics to my collection (and have most of them as multi-disc editions if possible, because I really enjoy Disney bonus material). I'd like to have both English and Finnish dubs on DVD when I buy the classics, because I enjoy listening to both of them, but it seems I'll have to wait a while until the package features (sans Fun & Fancy Free, because that's the only one of those released in here with both dubs) are released in Finland with both English and Finnish dubs.

I'd say I'm an Average Collector, but with a dash of The Completist. I want all 44 of the animated classics, even though I have A) never seen some and B) don't like some.

I've got 97 titles right now in my collection. :D

I guess I would be #4. I usually only buy the regular editions unless its a favorite movie of mine. I would rather save the extra money I would spend for the 2 disc version and just get another DVD. To me the movie matters, the bonus features are nice, but they are not the reason I get the DVD.

I started out as The Completist, but have gradually moved toward The Average Collector.
There are a couple of the animated classics I don't particularly care for, but The Completist in me wanted them anyway.

I'm the completist. I don't necessarily like all the Disney sequels and spin offs, but I still want them all.

Wow, I didn't think I'd get many responses to this!

Anyways, I added a new one, try and find it...

I WANT to be a completist, but instead I'm a strange combination of #1, #2, and #3! I sometimes collect movies I love, sometimes I want to collect a certain movie but I don't. Sometimes I just collect to be a completist at something(like the Pixar movies) and sometimes I just collect as a blind-buy.

Get what I'm saying?

Is there a lable for BUY EVERY TUESDAY? It seems like I am at Best Buy every week these day. There are so many great DVD release, and re-releases. I also think I am 5, and 5 1/2. I just like movies that are good, and I am loving the classics. I am so happy I have movies, like Casablanca, The Graduate, Wizard of Oz, etc, in my collection. I also have a lot of CULT CLASSICS, like Scarface, Napolean Dynomyte (which I really love), The Warriors, etc. I really like every type of genre. But I lack Horror/scary, because I don't find them scarry, and think they are more funny than anything eles, unless it's is based on a ture story type. Anyways all in all I LOVE COLLECTING DVDs/watching movies. If it was not for DVDs I would not have seen a lot of great movies!!!

I'd have to say I'm a mixture. Definately a 5 1/2, the average disney collector, but I'm also a Completistr, right now, it's bugging the heck out of me that i have the Bourne Supremacy, but not the Bourne Identity. Boxed sets are my candy. TV on DVD season sets are my liquor. I love disney sequels, even the ones that blow.

I'm an average collector (I have a little over 100 dvds), although I deny that I am part completist. I told myself that I would never buy Finding Nemo, Hercules, or The Great Mouse Detective, but I lied to myself. I'll probably buy Lilo and Stitch and Oliver and Company next.

And also, like the person above me ^, I tend to buy a movie if it's associated with a movie that I already own.

I'm probably closest to the Average Collector on that disk. I'm currently around 100 titles, at the moment, including TV season sets. I only differ from the description is that I never buy a DVD with no bonus features. If it's a less-well known movie that isn't likely to get a better edition, I'll go for a 1-disc provided it has at least a commentary, featurettes and trailers. Other than that, I'll only buy 2-or-more disc editions of movies.

Oh, I'm #10! :eye: with revisions:

10. The favorite customer at BestBuy - "Everyone at BestBuy knows me by name since I have a weekly appointment there every Tuesday, and my boyfriend works in Home Theater. My income goes mainly to bills, food, gas, shoes, and DVDs. Everything else Ryan can buy for me on my birthday, every 23rd of the month, or for Christmas. I'm just a shopaholic."

And I'm also a mix of #7 and #8 because I "have to have" every movie Audrey Hepburn was in. ;) (hey Escapay, I know you were "jabbing" me there! :p)
