Brian Regan has been part of the comedy scene for over twenty years, without ever experiencing a big breakthrough like getting his own TV show, landing movie roles, or being tapped for some high-profile hosting gig.
Still, he has endured as a popular and widely respected stand-up, whose content is much cleaner but no less funny than that of most of his contemporaries. Regan got hour-long Comedy Central specials in 2007 and 2008. His third, Brian Regan: Live from Radio City Music Hall, premiered last September and lived up to its title, being broadcast live and with only a single commercial break, a first for the cable network. In mid-February, it hits DVD.

This special finds Regan keeping the sold-out midtown Manhattan venue's 6,000 or so guests entertained with his everyday observations. He draws laughs from a wide variety of topics, from why people say "chicken leg" but "leg of lamb" to awkward party situations to Best of 7 sports series interviews to dance floor protocol to the horrors of lost hotel reservations. Regan is family-friendly without being family-oriented or censoring himself in obvious ways. Though Wikipedia claims he's nearing 60, Regan feels very much the middle-aged everyman, belonging to the same generation as Louis C.K. and Jim Gaffigan, comics ten years or so his junior.

Brian Regan's September 2015 performance at Radio City Music Hall became Comedy Central's first live stand-up special.

Regan wears an untucked red shirt, black pants, and sneakers, giving off a casual vibe befitting his comedy. He gets animated at times, but he's much more of a verbal comedian than a physical one. And though none of his jokes here really split your sides, nor do any of them make you groan or flat out miss the mark. Regan strikes an easygoing presence and finds a comfortable connection with his audience. His isn't the kind of envelope-pushing comedy that goes viral or prompts divisive reactions like Jeff Dunham. It doesn't land multi-picture deals or major gigs. It simply diverts gently for an hour and then soon fades from mind.

VIDEO and AUDIO

Live from Radio City Music Hall looks perfectly fine on DVD. The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation is clean, sharp, and vivid. Though it contains the network's standard "mature audiences" disclaimer, Regan's comedy is fairly fine for general audiences and requires no censoring or uncensoring in the unremarkable Dolby 2.0 stereo mix.

The Brian Regan: Live from Radio City Music Hall DVD's main menu gives us only the most basic of playback options.

BONUS FEATURES, MENUS, PACKAGING and DESIGN

Oddly, the DVD does not include a single bonus feature,
even though Comedy Central usually thinks to put together a backstage glimpse or two.

The basic, static, silent 16:9 menus let you jump to a topic, play the special in full, and turn on or off the English subtitles that are included.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Live from Radio City Music Hall is what you expect from a Brian Regan special. The comic's relatable bits are never off-color and never really off-target. Much stand-up comedy doesn't really lend to multiple viewings, but if you missed it on television, this barebones but sufficient DVD is a serviceable way to see the show.
