21 Jump Street

Theatrical Release Date: March 16, 2012 / Rating: R / Studio: Sony/MGM

Director: Phil Lord, Chris Miller / Writers: Michael Bacall (story & screenplay); Jonah Hill (story); Patrick Hasburgh, Stephen J. Cannell (TV series)

Cast: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Jake M. Johnson, Dave Franco, Nick Offerman, Ice Cube, Ellie Kemper, Lindsey Broad, Rob Riggle, Brie Larson, Johnny Simmons, Dakota Johnson, DeRay Davis, Johnny Depp (Tom Hanson)

Plot: Youthful cops pose as high school students to bring down a synthetic drug ring.

Domestic Box Office Prediction: $90 million

What an unusual confluence this is: a 1980s TV series that is kind of liked (in a somewhat ironic way), the directors of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and a script attributed to Jonah Hill and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World's Michael Bacall. Though this is definitely billed as an action/comedy (and a hard R-rated one at that), it doesn't seem to take the "Brady Bunch" and "Land of the Lost" route of sending up the material. This is one of the year's movies toughest to predict: it could just as easily go wrong as right.

Outlook: Undecided
