Based on the trailer, the short looks fun enough, but I can't bring myself to muster excitement for an Olaf short.

Yes, it looks it'll be fun. By the way, I've never wondered how Olaf got his name. They've found more details to tell about his origins that I thought. And it's hilarious that Oaken wants to sell Anna's dress.

I always thought he knew his name was Olaf because that's how Elsa created him, just like he knows how to speak. But I guess that's not the case.

Truthfully I think a Hans short could have been more interesting to me since we never really had anything of him since the first film. Maybe showing what his life is like in the Southern Isles.

You're right, I forgot about that. Elsa even calls him Olaf at the beginning. They didn't need to explain how he got his name.

Well, who knows, maybe this is just the first of a series of Frozen shorts. They could still make one about Hans.

I just saw the short :) and omg the comedy! It's pretty good. I'm always a bit scared when it comes on a short only focused on Olaf, but here half of the jokes will resonate for adults too! So there again, I would call it a success. In many respects, the concept of this short is very similar to The Lion King 1½ showing you what happens in the background with Olaf and how its actions will have incidents on the mains characters and the story of the original film. This is also the kind of short that may make you grow nostalgic for the beginning of the Frozen franchise and your first interactions with it.

Once Upon a Snowman was a near perfection backstory for Olaf. They cover every single thing about Olaf pre-his introduction. His love for summer makes so much more sense now that Oaken showed him pictures of summer. Though Olaf says he doesn't know why he likes summer in the first one. The only thing I didn’t like is that he was a cause of a certain event in the first film: The wolves was a okay addition, but Olaf shouldn't have been the sole reason they went after Anna and Kristoff, a la Lion King 1/2. Even though Olaf with that last wolf was sweet!

Funny thing: Jennifer Lee said in a NY Times last year that there was a big subliminal message in the first Frozen that no one has figured out yet: Was Wandering Oaken being an acronym “Naked Noreweigan” the subliminal message no one got this whole time? rotfl rotfl rotfl Yeah, I'm shocked that no one got it

Same! I was amazed :O And though we've been used to anagrams inside the Frozen universe with Frozen Fever. But this one is better! And it fits perfectly with the fact that Oaken is managing a sauna

Saw the short. Not much to say, it's what you'd expect from an Olaf's short, some were already done in Olaf's Frozen Adventure. I guess some would like that some things from the original got explanation, but personally I never felt they needed an explanation.

Yes, it was confirmed in a new LA Times article.
The short also gives a nod to those already clued in on the anagram for Wandering Oaken’s trading post — something Disney animation studio head Jennifer Lee has been trying to work into the films since directing “Frozen.”

Also, Once Upon a Snowman wasn't animated at home like it's been assumed. It wrapped up production in January.
By that point, they had already finished “Once Upon a Snowman,” which was greenlit for Disney+ as “Frozen 2” was being finalized. Completed in January of this year, the “Snowman” cast and crew were able to celebrate with a wrap party in February, just before stay-at-home orders went into effect.

I liked the short. There were some hilarious moments and even some heart. It's true that it was a bit like The Lion King 1½, but I didn't mind that. Also, I was glad that Olaf trying to find a name for him wasn't a retcon after all, as it initially seemed. In my opinion, it felt too short, though.

disneyprincess11 wrote:His love for summer makes so much more sense now that Oaken showed him pictures of summer. Though Olaf says he doesn't know why he likes summer in the first one.
You're right, there's a bit of a retcon there. I always assumed Olaf liking summer had something to do with the fact that Elsa says he likes warm hugs when she creates him as a child. However, I liked the explanation they gave here too and that moment was really funny.
farerb wrote:I guess some would like that some things from the original got explanation, but personally I never felt they needed an explanation.
Yeah, the short was fun in my opinion, but I agree that none of these things really needed an explanation.

^ That was really interesting- thanks for posting it! That's crazy how they brought back old technology, and there was only one computer that everyone working on that shot could use! But I guess they had to do that to make sure the scene "matched" the original one. It's great that a short gets this much care, you know? They don't treat these shorts as a "throw away," and we can appreciate that.
