The Disney Awards website has been updated for this year. These are the productions they've chosen to promote:

I'm surprised none of the 20th Century Studios properties are included. The Call of the Wild had good chances in technical categories like visual effects, sound, score etc. Last year, Disney used a different awards website for the Fox movies, but that one now redirects to the Disney one.

This may not be the final list of contenders since films such as Jiang Ziya and Jungle Beat: The Movie are absent. It's possible more entries will be added to the Academy's screening room at a later date.
A week ago, the race for the Best Animated Feature Oscar seemed as if it could have the smallest field of entries in years. Only 13 films were in the online screening room devoted to the category, although some significant contenders were clearly going to be added, Pixar’s “Soul,” Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” and GKIDS’ “Earwig and the Witch” among them. But on Friday, Jan. 15, voters in the category awoke to find that the size of the race had essentially doubled. Instead of 13 films in the screening room, there were 27, with the newcomers including not just “Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” and “Earwig and the Witch,” but also films from Denmark (“Dreambuilders”), Poland (“Kill It and Leave This Town”), Latvia (“My Favorite War”), South Korea (“Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs”) and India (“Bombay Rose”), as well as a Croatian movie with the intriguing and confounding title “Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Water Rebus.”

The number of eligible films is shy of last year’s record of 32, but it turns the category from a modestly-sized one to a robust one. Last year, voters were required to see 50% of the eligible films before they could cast ballots in the category; if that figure remains the same this year and additional films aren’t added, it will require each voter to see at least 14 films. Members who have volunteered to vote in the category are expected to receive their required-viewing assignments in the next two weeks.

Here’s the list of films currently in the Academy’s animation screening room:

“Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus”
“Bombay Rose”
“Calamity”
“The Croods: A New Age”
“Demon Slayer: The Movie: Mugen Train”
“Dreambuilders”
“Earwig and the Witch”
“Kill It and Leave This Town”
“Lupin III: The First”
“Mosley”
“My Favorite War”
“No. 7 Cherry Lane”
“The Nose or the Conspiracy of Mavericks”
“On-Gaku: Our Sound”
“Onward”
“Over the Moon”
“Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs”
“Ride Your Wave”
“Scoob!”
“A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Faramageddon”
“Soul”
“The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run”
“Terra Willy”
“Trolls World Tour”
“A Whisker Away”
“The Willoughbys”
“Wolfwalkers”

Here are the animated features eligible for a BAFTA. Away was submitted to last year's Oscars while Two by Two: Overboard! (aka Ooops! The Adventure Continues) has yet to secure U.S. distribution.
There are also notable differences between the BAFTAs and Oscars regarding the number of films in the animated feature category. The BAFTAs listed 13 films for eligibility. The Academy Screening Room currently has 27 films available for consideration. The Oscars have yet to announce the official number of animated films submitted, but are expected to by month’s end. The Academy nominates five films, if over 15 features are eligible, while the BAFTAs nominate three.

Animated features eligible for the BAFTAs:

“Away”
“The Croods: A New Age”
“Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train”
“Earwig and the Witch”
“Kill It and Leave This Town”
“Onward”
“Over the Moon”
“Scoob!”
“Soul”
“Trolls: World Tour”
“Two by Two: Overboard!”
“The Willoughbys”
“Wolfwalkers”

Happy to see Over the Moon has got something. Is the Demon Slayer film related to the anime TV series with the same name?

Yep! Reportedly, the massive success of the Demon Slayer move in Japan is even due to the series finding an even bigger audience on Netflix during the pandemic.

Soul getting named Best Animated Feature by the National Board of Review has sealed the deal. By this point, Soul has greatly surpassed Wolfwalkers in awards and recognition. It also ranked #24 whereas Wolfwalkers ranked #32 in Indiewire's 50 Best Movies of 2020 critics survey. It's worth mentioning Wolfwalkers ranked #7 in the category Best International Film in Indiewire's 2020 Critics Poll.

Yes, I think Soul has the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in the bag. The question now is if it can get nominated for Best Picture as well. When the first reviews arrived, I thought it wouldn't, as they were good but not excellent. However, since then it has received a lot of praise and after watching it, I think it meets all the "requirements". It's quite good, has an important message and the fact that they made an effort to correctly represent the African American community and their culture also works in its favor. We'll see, I guess we'll get a better idea when nominations for awards from the industry arrive.

I hadn't heard of those awards before. This is a good year to start for them since there are several Asian films that are strong contenders for awards. I'm surprised Mulan got two acting nominations. And it's curious that they name two films as winners in each category instead of just one.

I always thought it had a chance and I believe Disney/Pixar knew it and that's why they kept its release in 2020 and didn't put it under premier acess.

I think Soul is a good movie even though IMO it has similar issues I find with other Pixar's film, but I do think it was the best animated film of the year. As for Best Picture, I'm not that invested in the other films that are top contenders for nomination this year, Soul might be better than them and they might be better than Soul, and while I don't think Soul is better than some of the films released this past decade, I will be glad to see another animated film being nominated after a decade in which we had none.

Yes, you were right. Before those early reviews I also thought it had a chance, but then I changed my mind. It wasn't until I actually watched it that I believed it again.

I agree on both things. I also think it has some issues, but even though Onward is my personal favorite of the year (from the ones I've seen so far), I agree Soul is the best one. By the way, I read somewhere that if Soul wins Best Animated Feature, Pete Docter will become the first person to have three wins in the category.

Finally it turned out to be the same list you shared a few days ago, right? If I remember correctly, at first some were speculating that perhaps the number of films required to have five nominees in the category wouldn't be reached, but there are almost as many as last year, like that article you posted said.

It's interesting to see it broken down by country. I'm not really surprised, but Japan almost has the same number of films as the USA. And there are as many films from Asia as from Europe.

It's a shame they didn't nominate Onward. I haven't seen the first three titles, so I can't say if they're worthy or not, but in my opinion, Onward is at least better than Over the Moon. And even though Wolfwalkers is my favorite film from Cartoon Saloon so far, I'd say it's also inferior to Onward.
