Good to know! I'll have to check this out on YouTube on Monday, since I'll be too busy through this weekend. If I like what I hear, I'll pick it up eventually. I just made a big purchase two weeks ago, so I might need to wait a month or two before I buy anything else. :P

There's a possibility the show transfers to Broadway.
Q: The West End production is on pause, sadly, but when things do go back to normal, what are conversations like? Are there plans to aim for Broadway after London?

Stephen Schwartz: There was a lot of excitement around the show. We were getting wonderful audience response and doing quite well, so there was discussion about what was next. My hope and expectation is when the show reopens, if we can continue as strongly as we were before the shutdown, then obviously those discussions will take place. The timing that we were perhaps looking at at one time will be different now. But the truth is we just don't know right now. What's going to happen with live theater? When it's going to come back? Will it come back as strongly? Will it take a while? We have no way of knowing that, and so all decisions about other productions are a bit on hold right now. But we're very excited and proud of the show. When it's safe for people to come back to the theater, we look forward to sharing it with them.

I hope so. The Prince of Egypt is one of the greatest animated films, period. It deserves to make it to Broadway. I don't follow his career as closely as with the Lopezes and Menken; will this be the first time one of his shows makes it to Broadway since Wicked?

Yep. I was hoping his next Broadway show after Wicked would have been Hunchback, but we all know how that turned out. I'm still miffed at Disney for not transferring it to Broadway.

Wow, that's really astounding to me, since I think of him as a pretty big name. You know, I wonder if he'd been able to do Mulan's soundtrack at the same time as TPoE and Disney hadn't given him an ultimatum, if Mulan would have went to Broadway over the years? Hunchback unfortunately got besmirched for Disney for being "too adult" (same thing happened to Pocahontas just in a different way), to the point I think they've shied away from doing things with the property to avoid possible controversy or offended parents. I wouldn't be surprised if that's ultimately why Hunchback didn't go to Broadway more than anything else. Mulan didn't have that same problem, so maybe it would've got a Broadway show if Schwartz (or Menken, for that matter) had done the soundtrack?

Come to think of it, Schwartz's previous film at Disney was Hunchback with Menken. If he had done Mulan, would he have worked with Menken on that project, too? If so, I wonder why Menken didn't stay on the project after Schwartz left, just with a different writer?

No, I don't know, that's why I was asking. :P I thought Sotiris might know. If they were going to have Schwartz, I assume Menken would have been involved, too, since they had worked together on Hunchback, right? I'm trying to think if Schwartz and Menken ever worked again beyond the Hunchback film (aside from the Hunchback musical)...

^ That's a good point. Just a really quick Google search didn't bring me any info on Menken on Mulan, but I didn't dig too deep yet.

No, Menken wasn't attached to Mulan. Disney had promised Schwartz to give him a movie where he would write both the music and lyrics. But after he agreed to do The Prince of Egypt, they gave him an ultimatum. He refused to go back on his word and so he left Disney. He managed to complete four songs for Mulan before leaving. "Written in Stone" (the equivalent of "Reflection"), "China Doll" (the equivalent of "Honor to us All"), "We'll Make a Man of You" (the equivalent of "I'll Make a Man Out of You"), and "Destiny", an opening song.

^ Thank you!!! I didn't know about "We'll Make a Man Out of You,"but I had read about the other songs, but I didn't know Schwartz was doing music and lyrics. That would've been a good opportunity for him, but I don't blame him at all for sticking with TPoE.

I wonder how different "We'll Make a Man Out of You" was from "I'll Make a Man Out of You"? I wouldn't be surprised if they changed very little about the song; perhaps that's why the song is still so popular among viewers, it has more of the Schwartz touch than the rest. :P
