@WarmRegards: I love the stepsisters and Peters in the 1997 version! That's the main reason I prefer it. I love "Falling in Love with Love," too, even though I know they just stole that from a different R&H musical to give Peters something to sing. I also love the guy playing the Prince. Houston and Alexander aren't stand-outs, but I think they both do a serviceable job in their roles. And the music is mostly very good to me; "FiLwL," "Stepsisters' Lament," "Ten Minutes Ago," and "A Lovely Night" are glorious. As a child, I adored the "Impossible" sequence. I don't love it as much as I did then, but I still enjoy it and Houston sounds great (even if her voice isn't very theatrical).

It's not perfect by any means, but I still prefer it over the others--which are far from perfect themselves, btw.

Bernadette Peters should reprise her role in the new Broadway version. She'd be a wicked delightful addition to the cast (when Drescher ends her run of course).

I recently watched the Lesley Ann Warren version and Brandy version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. I hope to buy the Julie Andrews version soon, but anyway...

I now finally see how Leslie was the best actress of the three. She was sweet, kind, delightful, playful, and heartbreaking. She cried and was sad a lot, but she overcame that to get the prince water, and then again to get him water and hope he would try the shoe on her. So she didn't just stay sad, she boldly, courageously went after her happiness, in very small ways. I still am annoyed she was so stupid as to feel sad about her rags when the fairy godmother obviously just hadn't gotten around to it yet, but her crying after she transforms back no longer annoys me and I actually am in favor of it because it heightens her plight of how she doesn't want the prince to see her as a dirty servant.

Which brings up an interesting thing I noticed. The prince in the Lesley version doesn't fall in love with Cinderella as a servant at first. And when he sees her at the slipper fitting, at first he doesn't feel attraction to her again. It is only when she offers him water in her kind gesture that he thinks she could be the one. So it really says her kindness and what he saw in her at the ball is what he fell in love with.

So Lesley bravely goes against her stepmother's orders twice to get happiness. In the Brandy version Cinderella tries to run away, but before she runs away the slipper comes right to her, making her about to run away feel pointless. The most daring act however is probably done by Julie when she goes back to the castle the next day, still dressed as a servant. She's really going after her happiness there, or at least trying.

So anyway, despite the crappy effects and sets of the Lesley version, I think it's the best one.

I didn't feel the need to start a new topic, but I found some great images that pertain to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella in general.

The first is an absolutely great and hilarious Al Hirschfeld sketch of the 1965 Lesley Ann Warren version. Pat Carroll looks funny, and Stuart Damon and Lesley look so angry!!!:
EDIT: Image too big, moved to post futher down.

Next, I found concept art for the building designs in the 1997 Brandy version. I absolutely love the designs. Yes some of the production design and costumes are awful but there are also good elements to them as well. I mean I think all the ball outfits and the King and Queen's "planning" outfits are all great! Anyway, here's the pictures:
EDIT: Images too big, moved to post further down.

EDIT: I still can only post three things at a time! Anyone know why? So I'm making another post below.

Due to the server migration, a bug was created which prevents posting more than three hyperlinks in a single post. Unfortunately, this issue has not been resolved yet. You can still post an unlimited number of links as long as they aren't being made into hyperlinks. Embedding images shouldn't be a problem either. In your case it is because your turned them into hyperlinks. When you click on them, they direct you to Imgur. When you embed images from Imgur you need to copy the "BBCode" and not the "Linked BBCode". If the link you copied starts with "[url=" then it's the wrong one.

For example, instead of using this link...

Image

....use this one:

Image

Also, please be mindful of the size when embedding pictures. When they are too large, they disrupt the entire page of the thread. Instead of using the bbcode of the original size which is the default when using Imgur, try selecting "large thumbnail" or "medium thumbnail" where it says "sizes" depending on how big you want your image to look.

I hope this clears things up. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
