I remember reading it once, tried to check the commentary but all they said is that her mission is complete. It might be just a theory, but it does have enough support in the movie:

First what we learn about the heart in the prologue: "Her heart held the greatest power ever known. It could create life itself."

Tala is supposedly the oldest person in the village. While there are villagers with grey hair, she's the only one with white hair, and their life expectancy is supposedly short.

And then there's how she acts before and after. Before they go to the cave she dances and seems to be relatively healthy, and only after she gives the heart, she's gotten pretty weak rather quickly, she has started dying, but she's not dead yet cause the heart is still close, on the island. She finally dies once Moana leaves the island with the heart.

I know the Doylist reason is that they wanted a more emotional parting before Moana goes on her journey, but this Watsonian reason does make sense in my opinion.

I view the Heart of the Fiti as sort of like the One Ring from LotR, only not as an evil instrument. It holds power, but the person that holds it needs to understand how to utilize its power, and I guess that because Tala is knowledgeable, she knew how to do it to some extent until Moana was ready to go on her journey. But that's just my opinion. The theory though is something I read.

^ That is very deep, and I definitely never put two and two together, but that absolutely makes sense!!!!!

That is a neat theory. I still think they only had her die so Moana has someone to speak with when she's alone and discouraged in the climax, for Tala to be the ocean's voice, but it's a good headcanon to make it feel more organic than it ever seemed for me.

I know this is an old thread, but my favorite is Belle. She's an introvert and a bookworm, but she's also not a pushover. She stands up for herself but is also selfless and humble. I find her to be very relatable.

I decided to rank most of the human heroines for a change instead of just the princess line, to justify making another post now Encanto's out. :P Most of the films where there are two female (human) characters, it's hard to rank them separately from one another, since they often work in combination with one another. I think Lilo and Nani are the only ones where I like one a great deal more than the other.
