Akira (Live-Action)

Warner Bros. has greenlit its live-action remake of the anime cult hit "Akira" for a late February/early March start, sources tell Variety. In July, Warners tapped Spanish helmer Jaume Collet-Serra to direct at a budget of $90 million, which was brought down from an initial figure of well more than $100 million. Where that budget stands now isn't clear, and Warner Bros. had no comment on the project.

With a greenlight in place, studio can begin shopping for the two main male leads; sources tell Variety that the studio is high on "Tron: Legacy" star Garrett Hedlund, who's considered a front-runner. Both Warners and Collett-Sera have been keen on the thespian, but had to wait for a budget and a greenlight to make their move. Though no offer's been made, insiders say it's only a matter of time.

"Akira," long in development at the studio, has hit several speedbumps over the last several months, including Albert Hughes falling off as director. Collet-Serra was brought on quickly, but working out the budget took about two months, with studio execs and creative execs meeting last week before the decision was rendered over the weekend.

Appian Way's Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran are producing with Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar. It's another big win for Appian Way, which just secrured "Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves to helm its "Twilight Zone" film at Warners.

WB acquired the potential tentpole project for a seven-figure sum from Japanese manga publisher Kodansha in 2008. Set in New Manhattan (instead of New Tokyo), the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experimentats.

Katsuhiro Otomo, who wrote and directed the 1988 Japanese anime of the same name, will exec. produce the live-action "Akira."

Akira is a great film, but this could potentially work. I think Akira can translate better to live-action than most anime.

That's not why most are raging over the issue. It's because they're going to dumb it down. exec want make it PG-13. No way you can adapt Akira down into a PG13 rating. just doesn't work.

SA, I did see that. As I told you pretty clearly on DM, I am not stupid (and so you don't forget- no one has any right to claim otherwise).

I'm the last person in the world who supports a remake. Of almost any movie. I was actually interested in hearing what you had to say.

I never said you were stupid(geez you get over sensitive about everything don't ya?). That's why the way you worded your question made me wonder how you could not see what the image was about.

Anyway, at first i did support the movie since it was going to be produced by Leonardo diCaprio and he want to adapt it to the manga (the manga, the original source, and that anime movie are WAY different) and to do that it had to be rated R.

but somewhere along the way Hollywood exec were being little fucking pussies and worrywarts about money and demote it to PG13 level. No way that will work and it will only ruin the movie much much further. There's other crap that goes along with it.

So when I we heard it was scrap we shout YAY. but now Sotris-Bot has confirm that it is now in production again.

Super Aurora, I would highly appreciate if you would stop calling me that. Thanks.

I never really cared for Akira. I liked the art direction and the actions sequences (awesome bikes) but I could never really get into the characters or story. That said, I just don’t see this translating well into live action, especially when Americanized.

Does anyone else remember the live action Cowboy Bebop that Keanu Reeves was making or the live action Robotech that Tobey Maguire was making? Those would’ve suffered far less from the Americanization process, and potentially could’ve been great movies (although they probably would’ve ended up being disasters like Speed Racer).
