The Ultimate DVD

Post by Escapay »

This thread is similar to the thread found in General Discussion. Here members can post wishful-thinking Ultimate Edition DVDs of movies/tv shows.

As creator of this thread and to avoid the...conflicts...of the thread in GD, I have only

ONE GUIDELINE:

Do not copy anybody else's formats, titles/names, descriptions, and/or runtimes. Do not pass off anybody else's formats, titles/names, descriptions, and/or runtimes as your own. That is considered plagiarism and will not be tolerated in this thread. There are no exceptions. Adding a few words before/after someone else's descriptions in order to "change" it is still considered plagiarism. As is changing one or two words to titles/names/descriptions that still leave the original work familiar to readers. Plagiarism is a serious thing, regardless if it's in an academic paper, a published work, or an online forum. Again, it will not be tolerated in this thread.

If you're still confused about how to spot plagiarism, here are a few examples:

EXAMPLE ONE: Simple Title Changes
The Original DVD:
Doctor Gulley and the Dalmatians of Doom: Special Edition
Who Is Doctor Gulley? - A featurette that takes a look at the creation of the lovable character and his adventures on Planet Lysistrata. (15 minutes)
A Plagiarized Version of the DVD:
Happy, the Dancing Elf of Phrooflington: Specialer Edition
Who is Happy? - A featurette that takes a look at the creation of the lovable character and his adventures in Phrooflington. (15 minutes)

The Original DVD:
Doctor Gulley and the Dalmatians of Doom: Special Edition
The Visual Effects of Doom - A featurette that goes into detail of the complex visual effects for the film with comments by various members of the effects time and composite comparisons of key sequences.
A Plagiarized Version of the DVD:
Happy, the Dancing Elf of Phrooflington: Specialer Edition
The Visual Effects of Phrooflington - A featurette that goes into detail of the complex visual effects for the film with comments by various members of the effects time and composite comparisons of key sequences.

EXAMPLE TWO "Adding"/"Expanding" to make Plagiarist's work look "Original"
The Original DVD:
Doctor Gulley and the Dalmatians of Doom: Special Edition
Joseph Smith: A Hollywood Legend - A featurette about the late actor Joseph Smith, who provided the voice for Doctor Gulley.
A Plagiarized Version of the DVD:
Happy, the Dancing Elf of Phrooflington: Specialer Edition
Joseph Smith: A Hollywood Legend and Memorable Man - A new and special featurette that looks at the life of the late actor Joseph Smith, who provided the voice for Happy the Dancing Elf, and was a regular voice actor in the series "Let's Get Some Mary Jane!"

EXAMPLE THREE Format Similarities - while it may be easier if everyone followed one singular format, it is still considered an original by whoever created it first, so I encourage posters to try making their own formats instead of keeping the same style that others use.
The Original DVD:
Disc # in Bold and Underline - Italic Title - description description
DVD Sections in Underline
-DVD Features Titles in Bold - description description
--description description
--description description

A Plagiarized Version of the DVD:
Disc # in Bold and Underline - Italic Title - description description
DVD Sections in Underline
-DVD Features Titles in Bold - description description
--description description
--description description

EXAMPLE FOUR: How Not to Plagiarize when describing a similar type of featurette (such as a making-of documentary)...
The Original DVD:
Doctor Gulley and the Dalmatians of Doom: Special Edition
Go Dalmatian Go!: The Making of "Doctor Gulley" - A feature-length documentary that takes a look at the making of the film, from its pre-production and development troubles, to its well-publicized production and voice actor problems, as well as its redeeming release and critical praise. With new and vintage interviews from the film's director, various cast and crew, as well as film critics and noteworthy historians attached to the film. (90 minutes, 9 parts)

Someone Else's Conception of the DVD:
Happy, the Dancing Elf of Phrooflington: The Dancing Elf Edition
The Right Step: The Making of "Happy the Dancing Elf" - A new documentary that covers the rather short but effective production of the film and its continued cult popularity among fans. With various interviews by many people involved in the film, along with archival behind-the scenes footage, and remarks and commentary from film critics and well-known fans of the film. (100 minutes, 6 chapters)

Any posts with sets that have been created before this guidenline was set forth (May 13) are allowed to keep their sets intact (if they feature plagiarized material), but it's recommended that they be edited for future readings.

Now, back to my original post...

My first is for "Legend", and perhaps the only thing that will never likely appear in a Legend DVD is anything that mentions "Albert Gutierrez" as a director, lol. :P

Legend: 25th Anniversary Edition (2010)

Image

"Legend", Ridley Scott's 1985 cult fantasy returns to the shelves just in time for its 25th Anniversary, in a brand-new 4-disc set. The movie marks its return to DVD and a debut to Blu-Ray Disc. The film, which stars Tim Curry and Tom Cruise, was initially a failure at the box office, but slowly grew into a cult phenomenon on home video. Many versions of the film exist, and for the first time, viewers can finally see the original 125-minute cut, thought to be lost forever.

Disc One:: 2010 25th Anniversary Restored Cut (125 minutes)

With the newly found 125-minute version found deep in the vaults of Pinewood Studios, this restored cut was the first cut of the film (though it is not considered the director's cut), complete with Jerry Goldsmith's score, and such "missing" scenes as the Four Goblins opening and the Faerie Dance.

I always love doing things like this. :D I would love to see better editions of each Harry Potter film. Because I'm OCD about consistancy (and to save post space in this thread), I'm going to create a general specs list that can be applied to all four films, and I'll be more specific to each when needed.

Harry Potter and the...
(Sorcerer's Stone/Chamber of Secrets/Prisoner of Azkaban/Goblet of Fire)

DISC ONE (The Film)
* Deleted footage reinserted into the film with new effects (20 extra minutes for Sorcerer's Stone, 15 for Chamber of Secrets, 10 for Prisoner of Azkaban, and 15 for Goblet of Fire)
* Audio Commentary by the director, screenwriter Steve Kloves, and J.K. Rowling
* Audio Commentary by the director, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint
* Isolated Music track
* Pop-Up Fact Track

DISC TWO (various featurettes that can be strung together to form a two-hour documentary)
* Book to Film
* Production Design
* Hair, Make-Up, and Wardrobe
* Acting
* Cinematography
* Editing
* Visual Effects
* Scoring
* Release

DISC THREE (Isolated Featurettes, Galleries, and Promotional Materials)
* Screen Tests
* Script Read-Through Sessions
* Storyboard-to-Film Comparison
* Anatomy of a Scene (Quidditch Match and trap door challenges for movie 1, flying car, cornish pixies lesson, basilisk fight for movie 2, Buckbeak's flight, Whomping Willow, and Time Turner for movie 3, each of the three tasks for movie four)
* Multi-Angle Dailies
* Blooper Reel
* Multi-Language Reel

Galleries (with selected commentaries)
* Concept Art
* Storyboards
* Production Photos
* Publicity Photos
* Ad Campaign

Promotional
* EPK and Press Junket Interviews
* Premiere and After-Party Footage
* Talk Show Appearances

Trailers and TV Spots
* Domestic Teaser Trailer
* Domestic Theatrical Trailer
* International Teaser Trailer
* International Theatrical Trailer
* TV Spots

PACKAGING
Each disc will be housed in an ultra slimline case which slide in and out of a slipcover box (think of Hellboy: Director's Cut for an idea of what I'm talking about). The outer cover will contain the title object in question with an aging, solid color behind it. Each individual slim case and disc art will feature a member of the trio from that particular year (disc one for Harry, disc two for Hermione, disc three for Ron). Also included in each set will be a 25-page booklet with notes and artwork as well as a postcard with a drawing by J.K. Rowling that represents the story in question.

And ALL of the features (even the galleries) will be anamorphically enhanced. Anything that wasn't originally created in widescreen (like EPK interviews) will be window boxed.

My Ultimate DVD would be for "Survival", which has the honour of being the last ever episode of "Classic" Doctor Who, and as such I think it deserves a 2 disc release. While you may think this is going slightly overboard for 3 episodes out of over 150, the BBC has done similar in the past (I've just got the new "Mark of the Rani" DVD, which has about 2 hours of supplements on one disc, not counting the soundtrack/subtitle options)

Doctor Who: Survival
Disc 1 The Episodes

* Feature 3x25mins episodes

* Feature with optional improved special effects done with Multi-Angles

* Feature Commentary with Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred & Scriptwriter Rhona Munro

* Production Notes subtitled information track

* Soundtrack available in original 2.0 or remixed 5.1

* Isolated Musical Score

* Deleted Scenes

* "Home: The Making of Survival" Featurette (at least 50 mins)

* Trailers

* Photo Gallery

Disc 2 Special Features

* Feature re-edited into Movie Presentation (including Deleted Scenes and improved special effects)

* "Cosmic Chessplayer" Featurette looking at the character of the 7th Doctor (with contributions from Slyvester McCoy, Script Editor Andrew Cartmel, Archive footage of Producer John Nathan-Turner)

* "What Sly & Sophie Did Next" Featurette looking at post Survival Doctor and Ace appearances ("Search Out Space", Big Finish Audios, Virgin New Adventures novels, Marvel Doctor Who Magazine comic strips, Sly in the 1996 TV Movie, "Death Comes to Time" Webcast)

* "Search Out Space" Schools TV programme in full

* All the specially filmed in-game footage from the 1990's PC computer game "The Destiny of the Doctors" featuring Anthony Ainley as The Master.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I know this is cheating, being as these are from an actual upcoming DVD release, but I've long longed for Castrovalva to be released on DVD. It's my favourite "Classic" Dr Who story, even though nothing dramatic really happens.

Anyhow the specs have been released (along with the other titles in the "Return of the Master" trilogy boxset)
The Keeper of Traken
* 4x25min Episodes
* Commentary from actors Anthony Ainley, Matthew Waterhouse and Sarah Sutton, plus writer Johnny Byrne.
* Being Nice to Each Other (dur. 30' 04") - a new documentary looking at the making of this story through the eyes of the cast and crew. Featuring actors Sarah Sutton, Sheila Ruskin, Geoffrey Beevers, director John Black, writer Johnny Byrne and script editor Christopher H. Bidmead. Narrated by George Williams.
* The Return of the Master (dur. 08' 40") - Geoffrey Beevers, Christopher H. Bidmead and John Black talk about how they realised the return of the Doctor's arch-adversary.
* Sarah Sutton on Swap Shop (dur. 11' 14") - Noel Edmonds interviews Sarah Sutton, with questions phoned in from young viewers.

Logopolis
* 4x25min Episodes
* Commentary from actors Tom Baker and Janet Fielding, plus writer Christopher H. Bidmead.
* A New Body at Last (dur. 50' 20") - a new documentary covering the transition from Tom Baker to Peter Davison. Featuring actors Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Matthew Waterhouse, Sarah Sutton and Adrian Gibbs, script editor Christopher H. Bidmead, directors Peter Moffatt and John Black. Narrated by Denis Lawson.
* Nationwide - Tom Baker (dur. 4' 30") - an interview with Tom Baker from the BBC news magazine show.
* Nationwide - Peter Davison (dur. 3' 40") - an interview with Peter Davison on his forthcoming role as the Doctor.
* Pebble Mill at One - Peter Davison (dur. 12' 00") - Peter Davison interviewed on the long-running BBC lunchtime show.
* News Items (dur. 1' 55") - a selection of BBC News items, including reports on Tom Baker and Lalla Ward's wedding, the announcement of Tom Baker's departure and Peter Davison's arrival.

Castrovalva
* 4x25min Episodes
* Commentary from actors Peter Davison and Janet Fielding, plus director Fiona Cumming and writer Christopher H. Bidmead.
* Being Doctor Who (dur. 13' 29") - Peter Davison discusses his casting and time as the Fifth Doctor.
* Directing Castrovalva (dur. 11' 19") - Fiona Cumming talks about directing Peter Davison's debut story.
* The Crowded TARDIS (dur. 11' 25") - by the end of Tom Baker's tenure, the TARDIS crew had grown from the usual one companion to three. This featurette examines the reasons behind this change of direction. Featuring actors Tom Baker, Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton, director John Black and script editor Christopher H. Bidmead. Narrated by George Williams.
* Blue Peter - Peter Davison (dur. 9' 15") - Peter Davison interviewed on the popular children's magazine show.
* Swap Shop - Peter Davison (dur. 20' 40" ) - Noel Edmonds interviews Peter Davison, with questions phoned in from young viewers.
* Deleted Scenes (dur. 1' 34") - two deleted scenes from the story.
* Theme Music Video (dur. 3' 34") - a brand new remix of Peter Howell's version of the theme music for the series, exclusively remixed from the original multitrack master. Option to listen to the music in either stereo (default) or Dolby Digital 5.1 surround versions.

Each story will also feature Programme Subtitles, Subtitle Production Notes, TV trails and continuity announcements, Photo Galleries, isolated synchronous music, PDF Material - the 1980 Doctor Who Annual, Radio Times listings and the BBC Enterprises Season 18/19 sales literature as Adobe pdf files for viewing on PC or Mac.

Now, I honestly cannot think - off the top of my head - of anything to add to the Castrovalva disc. Perhaps a little piece on Escher (who inspired the story) would have been nice, but I guess you have to pay royalties to show his pictures. Also, the set could do with an overview piece of Ainley's Master as well as a tribute (hopefully this will appear on Survival, his last story).

:up: I'm so excited! I can almost taste this DVD already!
