OMG that's stunning! I can't believe I've never seen that before. Honestly they'd have no issue selling this film if they sold it with that as the cover lol.
And the you see the characters in the border. Taran, Dallben, Henwin, Eilonwy, Flewdur, Horned King, and Gurgi's faces are in the border. Nice details.
You have a keen eye! I totally missed that until you pointed it out.

Quite a few of these were used on the back cover of some of the home releases. Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Lilo & Stitch just to name a few and the Treasure Planet one was disc art (well John Silver’s arm isn’t extended but it’s near enough the same image).
The only cover I really like is the Gold Edition DVD cover. It's really well done even if Shang and Mulan's father look a bit off, probably because you can't see their pupils.
The Special Edition DVD is okay and certainly better than most of Disney's covers now but it was never a favorite of mine or something that was meant to be iconic.
The DMC Exclusive cover I give props to for including Mulan in her blue dress. That was always my favorite look of hers and I wish they had marketed her in that from the beginning. However, Mulan is extremely off-model facially and looks nothing like herself. Mushu isn't depicted the best either and the yin/yang symbol makes no sense since it is only featured in the sequel, not the original film. Although they do use this cover for the new 2-movie collection edition so I guess it makes sense then.
The Musical Masterpiece DVD looks like a Disney Princess product and I don't mean that in a nice way. Mulan is so off, even in her fan depiction, and Mushu looks like he's a character from a children's computer learning game.

1) Special Edition: It has the most going on in the background, so it's the most visually eniticing one IMO.
2) Blu-ray: The background is better here than the Gold Collection one. Yay having a few characters.
3) Musical Masterpiece: Besides the off-model-ness, I really like the colors.
4) (tie) Gold Collection & DMC Exclusive: The Gold Collection is a pretty classic image for this film. It's not spectacular. I agree with JeanGreyForever: I like the Blue dress, so this cover gets a notch up than I otherwise would've given it.
5) Heroes
6) Villains (it's cool to see Shan-Yu on something- he doesn't get nearly as much as other villains do)
1. Special Edition DVD ~ I like that they managed to include probably the second-best scene in the film (when Mulan wipes out the hun army) in the cover.
2. Gold Collection DVD
3. DMC Exclusive Blu-ray
4. Heroes Cover
5. Blu-ray
6. 3-Disc Collection DVD
7. Villains Cover ~ Love Shan-Yu as a villain, so it's a shame the drawing doesn’t look too great, imo. The chin should be more rounded.
8. Musical Masterpiece ~ I like the idea of her holding a fan, since she holds one at the beginning for the Matchmaker and then uses one to defeat Shan-Yu at the end, but the cover is just not well-drawn at all. Of course they copied Mulan herself from the Special Edition artwork—and badly.
Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ "Elizabeth Taylor"
Katy Perry ~ "bandaid"
Meghan Trainor ~ "Still Don't Care"
I've been a bit busy lately and I've missed the last two movies, but I'll try to catch up with what has been posted here and share my rankings for them in the coming days.
Here are some more international covers for Mulan:
Mulan
1. Gold Collection DVD - Awesome idea to have the sword show the two roles of the main character.
2. Special Edition DVD- I think it's pretty.
3. Spanish VHS/Zavvi Steelbook - It looks awesome!
4. Blu-ray - It keeps the good Gold Collection idea.
5. Japanese VHS - Pretty cool and elegant picture.
6. DMC Exclusive Blu-ray - Whatever, it's ok.
7. Musical Masterpiece DVD - You know, it's bad, but it's also actually kinda pretty...
8. Heroes
9. Villains
10. 3 Disc Collection DVD - Ew.
I like the VHS/Limited Issue/Gold Collection. The only thing that bothers me is that Mulan's jaw is asymmetrical.
I would have liked the Blu-ray had they used Yao, Ling and Chi-Fu instead of these three characters from the sequel I don't even remember. Seriously I get that the sequel is there as well but it is not as important as the original to be put on the front cover.
The rest are fine though Mulan doesn't really look like herself.
1. Swedish VHS - gorgeous (FTR, I like Mushu but the cover is better without him)
2. Gold Collection - pretty, nice colors, good layout, and all important characters are there.

True, but I try to justify it by her wearing make-up on the left and that probably gives her face that roundness. Or alternatively, months of training for war and war itself are bound to make you skinnier and your jaw more pronounced.
3. Special Edition - Mulan's head is too-oval shaped and slightly off-model, but overall lovely composition
I'm not going to rank the rest, but the Musical Masterpiece cover is horrible. Just how long are her (upper) arms ? Those are not only anatomically impossible, they are scary.
My favourite cover is the Spanish one because I grew up with it. I remember that in some commercials made for spain they used the gold collection cover but in the last commercials they used the true one.
I leave you a few commercials where it appears:
Welcome back, D82!! And thanks for posting the international covers!
Ironic that we are discussing Mulan right on the week when the live action version was supposed to debut. Sad, cause I think this is the one time I was truly excited about a remake! Not that the original Mulan isn't good, but I think there is room for improvement... and I think it lends itself well to live action.
Not a lot of covers, and overall, a pretty decent bunch! Though nothing spectacular. Here we go!
Honorable mention: the original soundtrack art, which is recycled from the poster. All red and black, with Mulan on her horse. GORGEOUS. Dignified. Beautifully executed and textured. A+
1) Blu ray: Yes... placing this one on top, even if a lot of the elements are recycled. This one has a better layout than the Gold one (which most elements are recycled from)... sidekicks are one on each side, as are Shang and her father. Good balance. I haven't seen the sequel, but those three girls look terrible, but I guess that's poor design work from the makers of Mulan 2. But extra points to this cover for the two-tone background and SPECIALLY for the faint inclusion of the Great Wall.
2) Gold Collection: very nice concept, with the sword and the two versions of the main character. The asymmetry doesn't bother me, because it's more of a reflection on the sword. Yes, there is an illogical/magical element to this, but it works. And she is mostly on model... except her lips were never that full... and she never had super thick eyebrows, even as Ping. The inclusion of Shang and her father seem a little random, kinda like an afterthought. I do like the red background... it's a color usually associated with China.
3) Japanese DVD: I like this layout! And very well executed. I believe the blade with the reflection are actually re-rendered from an actual movie frame. I like the depth from the attacking Huns... and the red-sky color scheme. Don't love the vertical title...
4) Spanish Steelbook: Great layout, well drawn characters, though her asymmetry does bother me here a bit... this is no magic-reflection like the Gold C. But it's a cool concept, and I like the textured rendering. The spanish VHS is a little worse, cause she is off center and there is no real reason for it (I get it, they wanted to include Mushu... then zoom out!)
5) Special Edition: Meh. It's a bit of a mess as far as layout. There is no reason for the sword to be placed like that on this one (unlike the VHS), there is that partial reflection, but not as a male... then there is that war scene... it all feels random. I never noticed the cricket laughing in the middle.... WHY??? And Mulan is kinda poorly drawn... like she has an under-bite, and that is deforming her face. Oh well. It's not terrible... just very bland.
6) Heroes: bland. But it is recycled promotional art from the time of release, so great drawing. On model, good linework, good anatomy and pose.
7) Villains: Well drawn, but poor shading, specially the hair and fur.
8 ) DMC exclusive: All characters are off model. The shading on the hair looks like amateur photoshop. Her pose feels random... Mushu looks high. No idea what the background is about.
9)Japanese VHS: BLAND. Bland poses, bland rendering. All slightly off model, poor linework.
10) Musical Masterpiece: Oh dear GOD. One of the worst covers ever made. Sloppy drawing skills, awkward pose... terrible anatomy. Exactly how is her left hand holding the fan like that??? Her right arm is also insanely long. All characters off model. The entire thing is a disaster... down to the off-center title.
I have always loved the Gold Collection / Limited Issue / Masterpiece cover. Europe also got that cover for the Blu-ray edition. The Special Edition cover is nice, too. I remember when I got the Special Edition DVD, I loved looking at the cover art. The Movie Club exclusive is awesome, I love her pose, even though she looks nothing like herself, and I love the red, it gives the cover such a nice, elegant feel. The Spanish VHS and Zavvy exclusive is super nice, and I kinda like that they drew her with long hair, even though she's in her military armour. The Musical Masterpiece DVD looks awful, the characters look like the videogame versions of themselves, and Mulan's arm is unusually long. But the colors are nice though. The Heroes cover is great, I have always loved that clipart of her. The Villains cover is meh...I don't like or hate Shan-Yu, so I have no strong feelings about it.
I love the Spanish cover, D82, and the second Japanese cover, too! Generally my favorite ideas for the covers are when they have the face split in half with the sword--ideally with one half with makeup, the other half soldier--and the battle with the Huns on the mountain. I wonder if that shot of the Huns is taken directly from a cel of the film just like the shot of the sword is identical to the moment in the moment? Either way, I like that they show Shan-Yu leading the charge.

Yes, I'd love for that artwork to be used for a Steelbook cover or something one day. And I agree, the story lends itself well to live-action, just like Aladdin, thanks to all the fighting / action.

Same about the red. Something about the wave behind her dividing the black and red makes it almost look like a yin / yang symbol, except replacing the white with red.

Hmmmm.... yeah, but the ying-yang symbol was never part of this film! Was it part of the second one?? And even if it is... I kinda like to pretend that the cheapquels never happened. When they are included on a blu ray, I pretend they are a special feature I never watch. Ugh. I own the Hunchback blu ray.... I don't think I could get through the sequel.
And Disney Divinity... sorry, I will disagree on one thing: I don't think Disney's Aladdin lent itself well to a live action adaptation. The original story of Aladdin does... not the adaptation of the animated version, in my opinion. I felt a lot of the charm and magic were stripped away from it.
I happen to think Mulan would work better with LESS magical elements... so the live action could be great (though I have my doubts regarding the witch character.... but we'll have to wait and see)
