Rick Riordan wrote:We got to sit down in person for the first time with my co-writer for the upcoming Disney+ feature film adaptation for Daughter of the Deep, Aditi Brennan Kapil. An accomplished playwright and screenwriter, Aditi brings a wealth of talent, experience and personal insight to this project. Becky and I knew right away she was the best writer for this adaptation, and getting to meet her in person only confirmed our confidence. We will be equal partners on this screenplay, and I am thrilled to work with her to bring Ana Dakkar’s story to the screen! The last of the rights contracts should be finished up soon, at which point we can get down to work. As soon as I can announce more, I will.

Rick Riordan wrote:On Monday, while hordes of grumpy Bengal fans headed back to the airport, Becky and I had lunch with our film agent and studio VP at the San Vicente Bungalows, then had a kick-off meeting with the feature team at Disney+ and my co-writer Aditi Brennan Kapil to discuss the adaptation for Daughter of the Deep. We anticipate diving into the script for the film soon!

Becky Riordan wrote:Here is what we can share so far as we are in the earliest stages with this project with the ink barely dry on the contracts: Rick and I are set to produce under our production banner Mythomagic with Daughter of the Deep as a feature film for Disney+. This project will be similar to what we are doing with Percy Jackson at 20th and Kane Chronicles at Netflix in regards to our input as producers. Rick will be co-writing the script with a wonderful screenwriter/playwright who brings a love of Rick’s books, loads of talent and experience, and her own personal story to this project. We are super excited to start and hopefully will have a kick-off meeting with Disney soon.

The film has been shelved.
Rick Riordan wrote:Daughter of the Deep rights have reverted to me after being in script development as a feature at Disney+. There was no issue with the script or the team. I loved everyone we were working with! It was simply a budgetary call, as I understand it, and Daughter would be an expensive film to make. I know these kind of setbacks are disappointing to fans, but they are common in the film industry, and happen more times than not. Getting anything made, even in the best of times, is monstrously difficult. I have gained a lot of respect for the producers, executives and writers who manage to navigate the rapids and get projects through. I don’t know what the future holds for Daughter. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
