LGBT Disney

Post by UmbrellaFish »

A thread for all things LGBT-related and Disney.

ShopDisney has released this year’s pride merch, the Rainbow Collection. Lots of good stuff in here: https://www.shopdisney.com/uniquely-dis ... ow-disney/ I had some gift cards saved up from DMI so I bought the ball cap, the Mickey and Friends pin, and the blanket. Tempted to get more...

Finding Dory, too, right? The filmmakers didn't say yay or nay if they were a lesbian couple or not, right?

The director said "They can be whatever you want them to be" and "We don’t know, we didn't ask them" which is a no. In the context of the film, the two clearly don't know each other. They are far apart from each other before being bumped into and aren't even dressed for the same activity. Sometimes people see things that aren't there like what happened with the family taking a sauna in Frozen.

"Diary of a Future President" (it's produced by CBS Television, but is technically considered a Disney+ Original Series) also has gay representation.

I know about Diary of a Future President, but because it's not Disney-branded (there's no Disney logo above the title) I didn't include it.

Who are the LGBT characters in Toy Story 4 and Zootopia? I either forgot about them or never noticed they were LGBT characters.

In Toy Story 4, there was a lesbian couple with their kid in the background of a couple of scenes. In Zootopia, Judy's male neighbors are married. They are listed in the end credits as Bucky Oryx-Antlerson and Pronk Oryx-Antlerson. They both have the same, hyphenated surname which means they aren't relatives. Jared Bush, the voice of Pronk and co-director and screenwriter of the film confirmed it.

Interesting. I never knew that about Judy's neighbors. I guesswe should be happy we get to be included in a Disney film as an offscreen 30-second role that you wouldn't even know if they were gay or not. We should be so grateful.

I've watched all of the Launchpad shorts and "Growing Fangs" and "Let's Be Tigers" also feature LGBTQ representation.

I found this article concerning LGBT "representation" (or, really, lack thereof) to be particularly interesting. Note that it does contain spoilers for Cruella.

I think I had heard about Judy's neighbors, but I didn't know it had been confirmed by one of the filmmakers, and I didn't know about the lesbian couple in Toy Story 4.

Well, it's a step forward, but it's true that they avoid making it completely clear the character in Cruella is an LGBT character.

I wish we were given more than just crumbs, though. Honestly, it's really just queer-baiting, which sucks. If Disney's trying to include LGBT characters, then they should at least be meaningful representations, not unspecified supporting characters or those with throwaway lines. It's like they're trying the bare minimum with the word "inclusion." But I guess acknowledgement of existence is better than nothing. Still crumbs, though. We'll have to see what Jungle Cruise and Eternals have to offer.

Russia warns Disney against distributing short film featuring gay character
https://lite.aol.com/entertainment/stor ... CN2D924E_2

If the way Disney dances to China's tune is any indication though, the Disney company probably will take what Russia has to say seriously, too. Disgusting.

Well, what is Disney supposed to do? Take on Russia? They literally have no choice. It's the law. If they dare put it on the Russian Disney+, the government will force them to take it down anyway.
