Ohhhh Ok. But still, he did say that he cared for Scarlet, and he could still have told her the reason he couldn't be with her was because he loved Melaine, which was the truth! Did he not tell her he loved Melanie so he could have an affair with Scarlet or something? If you don't pursue the person you lust, you can tell them why you can't be with them, and in his case it was love for another!

He was too much of a gentleman to tell her that he only wanted her for sex. He was also very much obsessed with honor and dignity so that's why he never went too far with Scarlet. However, he was selfish enough to never tell her that he would always love Melanie because he liked the attention that Scarlet would give him. Let's not forget that Scarlet was very popular with men and quite beautiful (not as much in the book though) so it was good for his ego to play cat and mouse with her.

I always hated Ashley. Scarlet was an awful person, too, but he was worse. Rhett knew upfront with their marriage that Scarlet really loved Ashley, whereas Ashley lied to Melanie the whole time and pretended to Scarlet like he didn't love her.

And pretended to Scarlet that he didn't love Scarlet or that he didn't love Melanie?

It's been a while since my friends and I did a movie night, but we finally just knocked one out, and this was perfect timing, too!

#51- It's a Wonderful Life

I haven't seen this one in so long. This is actually one of the first "classics" I saw, and it was during a surprising time, as well- I forget if we watched this during my third or fourth grade, but they showed us the film one day before holiday break. I don't remember too much about it besides the basic themes, and the scene when Mr. Gower snaps at young George, which is just as intense as I recall.

This is still very good, and I'm glad to have had a chance to see it again. I only streamed with a couple of friends, one of which is a big fan of the film, while the other was new to it and came out happy to watch an uplifting film for a change. I also think that its anti-capitalist themes would make a good double feature with The Grapes of Wrath.

Next up is going to be The Red Shoes, which is one of my all-time favorites. I think we're going to try after the holidays.

Avaitor, I was always bored of Wonderful Life until the angel comes, but maybe I'd like it better upon a re-watch. Glad you had a good movie night!

I’ll never forget the first time I saw It’s a Wonderful Life. I ran a classic cinema club in high school and It’s a Wonderful Life was chosen to be screened although I had never seen it before. I immediately fell in love with the movie and its message. Jimmy Stewart has always been one of my favorite classic actors. But after the movie finished and I made my way home I started learning about the Sandy Hook school shooting— which just so happened to have been exactly 8 years ago today. Whenever I think about this movie and its theme of the importance and value of human life, I think about those 26 souls lost on that horrific day.

I watched The Christmas Set-Up, a Lifetime original movie with two gay leads and Fran Drescher as a matchmaking mother.

I loved it! I don’t watch a lot of Christmas TV movies but this year I am digging them. It’s a pretty conventional plot— big city lawyer goes back to his small town and falls in love with a (secretly rich) Christmas tree salesman. Except those two leads are men! Who have wonderful chemistry, by the way, because they are played by real life married couple Ben Lewis and Blake Lee. Famously Jewish Fran Drescher is adorable and lovable as the mother who sets her son up for a Christmas romance. It was just so cute!

As I was watching the movie, I was literally beaming from ear to ear. I wondered, “Is this what straight people feel like all the time?” But I think no, because they’ve never experienced the void. They get this kind of representation all the time whereas this was the first time in my whole life I’d ever seen two gay men in a cheesy Lifetime Christmas movie.

Well, anyway, I loved it. If you’re LGBT and need a little Christmas cheer, I recommend checking it out— and even if you’re not LGBT, the good feels are universal and who doesn’t love TV icon Fran Drescher??? According to my TV, it next airs on Lifetime on Dec 20th but it’s also available for free On Demand which is how I watched it (through xfinity). I will probably watch it again before the season is over!!!

I recently watched a Paramount TV movie in the same vein as Hallmark movies that focused on a gay romance. The movie is called Dashing in December. The only notable actor is Andie MacDowell as the mother. It was about what I expected; I never expect TV movies to be very good, but it was nice to see a romance like that being easily viewable and widely available.

I just LOVE the scene with the three kids at the beginning of the film with the two girls sitting at the bar fighting for George's attention. It's so adorable.

I saw A Patch of Blue for the first time yesterday. What a wonderfully sad movie. I just knew it wouldn't have a happy ending, since dramas rarely do. (Well, it was happy in the sense that Selina escapes, but you know what I mean...) I kept hoping it would jump into the future a couple of years down the line where Selina would return after she's less dependent and naive, and she and Gordon would begin again. I would just keep that as what would happen in my own head, but the ending kind of implies the opposite, that that will never happen, unfortunately. :( The story he tells her of his grandmother's music box from a love affair she had he had said didn't work out because she was "just" a beautiful woman. It's interesting that in the ending Selina leaves the music box back with him after she's just called him "beautiful." Since he's left with it as the school drives her a way, I took it as being a memento of a love affair that will never be for him, too, only with the genders reversed.

Veneno

This is an 8-part Spanish miniseries on HBO Max. It tells the epic life story of La Veneno (aka Cristina Ortiz Rodríguez), who was a real life Spanish icon. She was a transwoman pioneer, a sex worker, a singer, an actress, a pornstar, a convicted fraudster, a feisty TV personality. I knew absolutely nothing about her when I began the series, but I fell in love with her complicated personality and roller coaster life story. I can’t stop thinking about La Veneno! It was such a good TV show— excellent production values and wonderful trans actresses— and it is the only epic about an LGBT person that I can ever recall seeing. I highly recommend!

Reading the 2020 Oscars thread in the Disney Discussion forum, it's weird with streaming...there are so many films from last year that I would have normally seen in the theater, and bought on disc, but with streaming, or VOD, I haven't seen most of the ones I otherwise would have. I also haven't looked yet, I guess, to see if Croods 2, Scoob!, etc, are on disc yet...

I saw Auntie Mama with Rosalind Russel a while ago. I wanted to watch it in full since I saw some of it on TV when I was young and my mom loved it. I wanted to watch it mainly because sometimes you want to love, or at least see the same things your parents have. It was a really great movie! And it was so edgey! I was so surprised theaters allowed a movie like that to exist back in 1958! My mom said there was always edgey stuff in all of history, you just had to know where to look! I wonder if Patrick originally asks what the word "homosexual" means in the play, and the movie changed it to "heterosexual"? Just kinda felt like that might have been the case. Anyway it was a real hoot and I loved it. So, I also, just this morning, watched Mame with Lucille Ball. Oh, man, the singing was tragic, but acting-wise, Lucy was perfect! And I didn't know Bea Arthur would be in it, either! And she was perfect as always! I didn't really like the songs, but I have very specific musical.tastes and am hard to please. I thought the film however was also really great on it's own from Auntie Mame, even if I think Auntie Mame was just a bit better. Two things I wish were in Mame were how we saw Mame invite the Upsons to her place for dinner, and how we saw Patrick see what Mame was doing for him at the end was what he wanted and he thanked her for it. It was really bad that that wasn't in Mame. But I highly recommend both!

I love Auntie Mame! I watched it for the first time in a while a few months ago and had a hoot. It's not perfect- Ito makes me cringe, and I frankly couldn't stand Agnes Gooch- but I appreciate the warmth and openness in the story, and especially Rosalind Russell's performance.

I haven't seen Mame, and I'm only vaguely aware of the show itself beyond it being the origin of "Just a Little Christmas". Although I have not heard good things about Lucille Ball's singing. In fact, I recall the first time I saw the original film on TCM, which ended with Robert Osborne talking about how casting Ball was "ill-advised". That cracked me up, especially knowing he got his start in the industry because of her, so it must have been bad for him to go that far!

52. The Red Shoes

It's been a little bit since our last one, but I was excited to do this, because it's one of my favorites. This is a gorgeous retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson story, done with breathtaking ballet choreography and shot in unforgettable technicolor. It's an incredible ode to passion and romance.

However, those familiar with the Anderson story know that it doesn't have a very happy ending, which this take follows suit in. That didn't sit well with one of my friends, who hasn't been in the best state of mind lately, as she's been working from home since the pandemic started. The only time she's really seen people besides our last in person movie night were a couple of trips to see her family in Boston. So she hasn't been in the best mood to handle depressing or bittersweet endings like this.

And unfortunately our next couple of films, The Terminator and Apocalypse Now, are even bleaker, so she'll probably be passing on those. Right after those is the original Star Wars, but she doesn't want us to skip ahead for her, so we've been talking about streaming some Jackbox games or maybe a show or something else instead for the time being, and coming back to movies a little later.

Still, she did enjoy the film up until the ending, as did everyone else watching. She did ballet for a long time, so a lot of memories came rushing back to her, in a good way. Another friend is a fan of Anderson, and he liked the adaptation.

Glad you like Auntie Mame, Avaitor! I didn't realize there was anything bad about Ito. What's wrong with him? Agnes I thought was adorable. Anyway, I'm glad you like the rest! Rosalind really does do a divine performance!

Robert Osborne saying that really does mean the singing was bad! And believe me, it is. Also, I didn't realize "Just a Little Christmas" and "Bosom Buddies" came from Mame till I saw it.
