Next year, indie films will have an even harder time making it through. I really hope Klaus manages to secure a nomination, though I'm not holding my breath.

My prediction for the films nominated at the 2019 Oscars is the following.

Frozen 2
Toy Story 4
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
Missing Link

Looks like this year will likely be the reverse of 2018, since I’m looking forward to all of these. Hopefully they don’t disappoint. I’m rooting for Frozen 2 / Missing Link to win at this (early) point.

The subtitle to the Lego Movie sequel is hilarious.

According to Oscar rules "motion capture and real-time puppetry are not by themselves animation techniques" and "if the picture is created in a cinematic style that could be mistaken for live-action, the filmmaker(s) must also submit information supporting how and why the picture is substantially a work of animation rather than live action".

Considering the film mostly features key-frame animation and the characters talk and sing so no one can reasonably mistake them for real animals, the film would have no problem being deemed eligible if Disney were to submit it in the Animated Feature category. But they're not going to. They'll submit it in the VFX category where it has a higher chance of winning and won't have to compete with their WDAS and Pixar entries.

So far, Netflix has rendered ineligible Godzilla: The Planet Eater. Here's hoping they won't do the same with Klaus and Pachamama. Update: Good news! Netflix is giving both films an Oscar-qualifying run in theaters.

Oscar Changes Animated Features Voting, Shorts Qualification Rules
http://www.animationmagazine.net/events ... ion-rules/
In the Animated Feature category, the theatrical release of eight eligible animated features in the calendar year is no longer required for the awards category to be activated. In addition, nominations voting will be automatically open to all active members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch. Other active voting members of the Academy must opt-in to participate in the nominations round.

In the Short Film categories, Animated and Live Action Short Films now have the option to qualify theatrically in either the City of New York or Los Angeles County to be eligible for submission.

I'm glad Disney allowed all these shorts to compete for the Oscar. I guess the fact that they submitted so many shorts this year helped break the record.

The first award of the season went to Toy Story 4. Granted, Frozen 2 hasn't been released yet so it's to be expected.

I see that Randy Newman also won an award, though not for Toy Story 4 but for Marriage Story. I wonder if he might have chances of being nominated for the Oscar this year for his work on that film.

I'm surprised Toy Story 4 didn't get a nomination for Best Director. I guess it's not the favorite to win Best Feature then.

And despite all the short films Disney has released this year through the WDAS and Pixar short programs, no short from the company was nominated in any category.

I'm more surprised that Okko's Inn was nominated over Funan in the Independent Feature category.

DreamWorks' Marooned wasn't nominated either. I think because of ASIFA's partnership with Annecy, short films from Hollywood studios won't get nominated anymore. The same thing happened last year. I believe the nominating committee that's now voting for this category has been specifically selected for their interest in indie and international productions.

It's true. I didn't remember that. Well, before I think it was the opposite. It's positive that they're now taking into consideration indie and international productions too. And I haven't seen the shorts nominated this year, maybe they were the ones that deserved it the most. I just hope they're trying to be fair and they're not nominating that kind of shorts only just because of their partnership with Annecy. But, yes, it's very likely they're doing what you said.
