Wicked: The Musical: The Movie

Post by Sotiris »

It was announced last month that the movie adaption of popular musical Wicked was moved off of its original December 20, 2019, release date. “That was always a fake date. There wasn't a prayer in hell,” says Stephen Schwartz, the man behind the stage musical.

Schwartz talked to THR Thursday evening at the Songs of Hope gala benefiting cancer research, where he was being honored with the Warner/Chappell Music "Icon of Hope" Award. Though delayed, Schwartz assured that things are still progressing with the movie: “That being said, we're making really good progress. The screenplay has gone through a few drafts. In fact, while I'm out here, I'm going to be seeing Winnie [Holzman] and we're working on the most recent draft.”

Holzman wrote the book for the stage version of Wicked and is now working on the screenplay. “When we're ready, we'll go," Schwartz says. "But we want to make sure we're ready. It won't be forever but it also won't be next year."

Universal filled the date previously held by Wicked with another Broadway-to-big-screen adaptation — Cats. When the studio announced the change, Universal noted that the movie will be re-dated soon to accommodate production scheduling. Says Schwartz, “I will tell you 100 percent there will be a movie of Wicked and it won't be that far away but it won't be next year because we're still writing. Pre-production hasn't even begun but that could start in the not-too-distant future."

Stephen Schwartz wrote:I know people are wanting to know where things stand with the Wicked movie, but all I can say is that we are making progress on the screenplay and the new songs. In fact, as I type this, I believe Winnie Holzman and our director, Stephen Daldry, are conferring in LA about the upcoming draft. So it’s coming along, I promise.

I will be patient for this, but I hope I don't have to wait too long. I'm excited!

That's a while off but I'm glad we have a confirmed date now. I really hope they do not listen to a small margin of fans and hire Dove Cameron as Glinda though. Lea Michelle as Elphaba on the other hand...

Yaaay!!!! Any release date not too far off is fine with me! The longer we wait, the more preparation to make it good, after all! Dove Cameron as Glinda would be bad, but Lea Michelle as Elphaba would probably turn out great! I wish they were getting someone else to do the screenplay since I don't feel like Winnie Holzman will make it that smart or emotional but we'll see.

I'm not familiar with Winnie Holzman's work so I don't have much to say about that, but I love Lea Michelle and she's the one fancast I hope comes true.

Oh, good! Oh, Winnie Holzman wrote the original script (I bet you already knew that?) and I saw the show in 2006, but I just don't remember her script being that deep.

I wasn't aware who wrote the original script. That explains why they are retaining Winnie Holzman for the movie since the musical was such a smash hit.

Yes, I figure that must be why they are using her, too.

I wonder if anyone will ever do a non-musical Adaptation of just the original book by Gregory Maguire ?

I certainly hope so !

I've given up on it ever actually happening. A film version has been talked about for years and years and years.

I mean, a film adaptation of "Cats" has been talked about since the '90s and it's now finally opening this week.

Film adaptations of Broadway musicals tend to take a long time to happen, partly because they want to maximize the Broadway and touring grosses and make sure enough people have gotten the chance to see the show on stage before releasing a movie version.

A number of well-known and popular musicals took several decades to reach the screen. Off the top of my head: Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables, Rent, Chicago and Evita. I'm sure it will also be a long time before we see film adaptations of Hamilton and The Book of Mormon.

I'm sure it'll look lovely once the film's released in 2027.
