I listened to "Nowhere to Go But Up." It's a really fun song. I'm surprised by how wonderful Whishaw sounds and Walters was really good, too. I'll listen to the other songs first, but I'll probably end up buying the whole soundtrack after all. I'm shocked that the film's music was snubbed by the Golden Globes. The Globes are just strange most of the time.

Sotiris wrote:It was great seeing James Baxter talk about the movie. It's been so long, I hadn't realized how much I missed that. Not just the movies themselves but the delightful making ofs where you see the animators working on their animations desks and talk about the process of creating the movie.
Yes, it was great. I've missed that too.
Sotiris wrote:He's totally overacting to the point of caricature. Couple that with his ridiculous British accent, I can't possibly fathom how the voters thought not only this was good acting but better than so many other performances this year.
I didn't remember his accent. It's true, some people have criticized that. However, he was also nominated at the Satellite Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical and I've read several positive comments about his performance, so I don't know. We'll see if it's true when the film opens.

By the way, now that I've listened to the songs several times, I think the composers have done quite a good job after all. Of course, they aren't as good as the original movie ones, and some are better than others (I don't like "Turning Turtle" or "The Royal Doulton Music Hall" much), but overall is a good soundtrack in my opinion. I think my favorites are "(Underneath the) Lovely London Sky" and "Nowhere to Go But Up", but "Can You Imagine That?" and the ones submitted to the Oscars are quite good too.

Having listened to the rest of the soundtrack now, I actually love "Turning Turtle." It makes me laugh. *shrug* "Can You Imagine That?" is my favorite after "Turning Turtle" and "Nowhere to Go But Up." I don't think the soundtrack compares to the original, but it's not bad.

Well, though as I said it's not from my favorites, what I like about that song and also about "The Royal Doulton Music Hall" and "A Cover Is Not the Book" is that they're funny and cheerful songs. And Meryl Streep gives a great performance in "Turning Turtle".

By the way, does anybody know what technique they've used in these shots with the carriage from the previous TV spot? Is it cel-shading? I think it looks quite bad. I wish it was 2D like the animated characters or completely live-action instead.

The footage from that one TV Spot, the one where Annabel and John are having some kind of carriage chase in the animated world but darker and scarier to save Georgie seems to be where the score track "Rescuing Georgie comes from, boy howdy is that going to be big nightmare fuel for everyone.

I haven't seen any trailers nor listened to any songs, but they showed us a large part of Trip a Little Light Fantastic and it looks awesome and kinda has the same heart of the first one, you know? I thought it would be awesome but not awesome like the first movie, but now I'm convinced this might be amazing and a very nice sibling. Emily Sibling is just Mary Poppins and no one can deny. (I think they also showed us a very large trailer between both ends of the scene, but I don't know if it was something already released or not)

Yes, it could be. I was intrigued by that score title and also by tracks 25 and 26. I wonder what happens in those scenes.

When the children visit the bowl, a wolf, a weasel and a badger visit the nursery and steal John, Annabel and Georgie's belongings. And they try to get them back. It kind of mirrors their real life situation with the house on Cherry Tree Lane, which the bank is trying to take away from Michael.

Thanks Old Fish Tale, now it makes sense. :)

Of course I wonder why Wilkins wants to repossess the Banks house in the first place because I heard from one Instagram review that he didn't have a clear motivation for it.

I'm still reading the novelization. In fact, I just ended reading that chapter before writing that post. So far, what I know is Michael owes money to the bank because he took a huge loan out when his wife got sick. Michael and Jane are trying to find a certificate of the shares their father left them to pay the debt.

Oh okay, so basically Wilkins is just doing his job but doing it in a negative way that would make him out as a very shallow person/villain. Interesting.

Thanks for the info, Old Fish Tale, but I haven't read it because I actually didn't want to know it yet. I was just curious about those scenes, but I prefer to save some surprises for the theater.

I just saw Mary Poppins Returns!!! It was so good! I had a smile on my face the whole time, and I'll go see it again when it's officially released next week. It was like seeing a big budget musical made in the 1960s. There are even a couple of nods to The Sound of Music. The only disappointment is that Julie Andrews wasn't in it. She should've just done the film. It's obvious that the Balloon Lady role was written with her in mind.

PS I’ve read Karen Dotrice, the original Jane Banks, makes a cameo in the film. Does anyone know what part she plays? Is it a fleshed out character or just a mere quick bit? A part of me really hopes she plays Winifred Banks.
Yep, she's in it. She plays a lady looking for directions on Cherry Tree Lane. It's a very small cameo. If you blink, you'll miss it.

Yep! That is indeed Rescuing Georgie :)

His motivation is greed. He takes advantage of the great slump by repossessing people's homes, and he makes more money that way.

Glad to hear you really liked it tsom. It's too bad that Wilkins motivation is basic greed and that we need an obvious villain in a Mary Poppins sequel where I don't think it needs one. Yet personally, I can see why Wilkins needs to exist so that the story doesn't repeat the first film's plot and to have higher stakes; I only hope that it ultimately works in context of the movie.

tsom, thank you so much for answering my question, my friend! I am so glad you liked it.

Second question: during Turning Turtle— there is a line “Perhaps if you all lend a hand” which sounds a bit like Angela Lansbury to me, but it could be Meryl and I don’t recognize it because of the character voice. But it really sounds like Lansbury to me. Am I right?

Third question: any mention of George and Winifred Banks? Are we to assume they are dead, or is actually mentioned in the film? As I grown older, David Tomlinson’s Mr. Banks has really warmed to my heart. If they are dead, it’s very sad to me that the Banks has such limited time left with their children at the end of the original— 20 some years of less, I think? But I suppose that would almost strengthen the message of both films. I really appreciate that they’ve named the (youngest?) boy Georgie. Adorable.

And I totally hear The Sound of Music nods, too. When the overture begins, I see images of Salzburg in my head. That has to be deliberate, I think. As was the movie poster, which is very 60’s musical-style. Even some of the musical numbers like “The Cover is Not the Book,” are a little less “Poppins” and a little more “Oliver!,” another great sixties musical. All very fitting choices, I think, which illustrate how much care they’ve put into this production. I’m so very excited to see this film.

I think it will do gang busters at the box office, but I hope they let the franchise rest a bit. Give us another 10-25 years (at least) before revisiting Mary, with different actors in the lead roles again. Please, please, please Disney keep her special.

Q: Will there be another sequel?

Rob Marshall: Another sequel? Will there be a Marry Poppins 3? I don't know. I mean...There's a lot of material in those books. A lot of material in those books. And you know, there is no narrative to them so that was something that was completely created. So that would be the big challenge. Where do we go? You know? As Emily said so beautifully, she's enigmatic so what you really don't want to do is go to the backstory of how she became Mary Poppins.
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rm4ioTb28v4
Q: Will there be a sequel?

Rob Marshall: Well, I don't know. I will say there is a lot of great material there. There really is. I mean, there are 8 books. There's beautiful characters, fabulous adventures... P. L. Travers wrote until she was, I think, in her 80s. And so, it's all there. I hope it's not another 54 years for the next one.

Regarding the possibility of another continuation, Rob and Emily also talked about it in this article:
With the seal now unbroken, and the sacrosanctity of the ’64 film unviolated by its sequel, could this be the start of more Poppins screen adventures? The source material is not unlike that which fuels the James Bond movie franchise: a stack of lively books by an ornery British author concerning an iconic British character who neither grows old nor dies. So would the applicable parties be amenable to a return after Mary Poppins Returns?

Marshall, for now, is eager just to get the film out. “But I do know,” he adds, “that there’s a lot of material there and it’s very rich with all kinds of adventures and ideas. It’s certainly ripe for the picking.”

Blunt doesn’t hedge for a moment. “Oh, I would pay Rob to do it again with me. Yeah, I would. Definitely,” she says. “More stories left to tell.” There always are for superheroes.

After hearing the songs, I think they are just brilliant ! You can ABSOLUTELY tell they are from the Mary Poppins universe, and they don't stand out of place with them at all. Settle in beautifully.

Emily is wonderful as Mary; sharp, funny, sarcastic, warm ... just brilliant. Personal highlights are 'Can You Imagine That', 'The Cover Is Not The Book', 'Where The Lost Things Go'... and randomly, 'Turning Turtle' ! Laughed out loud at it when I first heard it, honestly.

It was a bit of a shock when she went full on cockney in 'TCINTB' but I can see exactly why, its a Vaudeville style, jukebox song that would have been playing in the theatres of old in England. That's what they were going for, and it totally get's that !

I am SO EXCITED for this film, I can't even begin to explain. I truly hope Emily isn't trumped at all the awards shows by Gaga as this is a joyful, hopeful Disney film as opposed to a dark drama with a pop star turned actress. Emily has paid her dues, and it would be wonderful if this was her award winner !

The review embargo has been lifted. The reviews are good, but not as great as it seemed they would be from the early reactions and all the awards. One of the main criticisms seems to be that it's too similar to the original movie.

And as many of you have probably heard already, Emily Blunt has been nominated at the SAG Awards. And not just for Mary Poppins Returns, but also for A Quiet Place in the supporting actress category.
