I can't say I care what wins. What a weak year. PIXAR has it on lock, but I suppose you could say that, well, every year until kingdom come.

I think Isle of Dogs has a fighting chance. The Academy seems to grown more appreciative of Wes Anderson, judging by how much they liked The Grand Budapest Hotel did a few years ago, and I can see Fox Searchlight mounting a campaign highlighting that he doesn't have an Oscar yet. We'll see if the voters' newfound love of Wes Anderson is enough to overpower their love of Disney-produced animated films.

I also feel Early Man might miss out. Even from hardcore Aardman fans, it seemed to get an "it's alright" reaction. It's also their most British film to date, which is saying a lot, so I'm not sure how much it will appeal to the American voters. So much of the film's humour is centered around football and British football teams.

^Yes, Isle of Dogs does have a sporting chance. It won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival 2018. Also, it was named Best Animated Feature by the Toronto Film Critics Association, the Atlanta Film Critics Circle, the San Diego Film Critics Society, the Las Vegas Film Critics Society, the Boston Society of Film Critics, the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association, the Phoenix Film Critics Society, the Southeastern Film Critics Association, the Nevada Film Critics Society, the North Texas Film Critics Association, and the Online Association of Female Film Critics.

Liyana, an animated/live-action documentary has been submitted for Oscar consideration in the Best Documentary Feature category. It won the Grand Prize Feature at the New York International Children's Film Festival.

We all know Ralph 2 will win because that's the one kids will like the most. After all, they only let the kids vote right? Like that guy that year who was a voter yet has no time to watch "fucking Chinese cartoons" since he's too old to watch any cartoons at all.

FYC ads for Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet: https://www.ebay.com/itm/INCREDIBLES-2- ... :rk:1:pf:0

By the way, Disney is now promoting Infinity War in more categories. At first, they were only campaigning the film for Best Visual Effects.

I hope DreamWorks' 2D-animated short "Bird Karma" gets nominated this year. It would be an insensitive for the studio to keep making 2D shorts.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is getting great reviews, could it win the Oscar beating both Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet?

It's highly probable. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been named Best Animated Film of 2018 by the New York Film Critics Circle, the New York Film Critics Online, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Boston Online Film Critics Association, the Kansas City Film Critics Circle, Indiana Film Journalists Association, the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle, the African-American Film Critics Association, and the Black Film Critics Circle.

That's great to hear that there might be a non-Disney contender for the first time in a while. I'm sure it'll be the main threat for Incredibles 2.

I can only imagine how wonderful the response would be here if WIR2 were to win miraculously.

I'm pretty sure if it loses there'll be cries from fanboys about "Pixar favoritism" like in 2013.

At least those complaints were legitimate back in 2013. There's no truth behind that this year.

Listen. I'm saying this as a die-hard Disney fan and a animation fan. With all due love and respect to Disney, Incredibles 2, and Wreck-It Ralph, I would honestly love Spider-Man beating Disney for the Oscar. Not only does it look great, but some other studio has to win Best Animated Feature. Disney winning literally every year (minus 3-4?) is very tiresome and bias to the industry. The Oscar should really get a Disney break from that session honestly. Disney has enough Oscars for a lifetime. It's some other studio's time to shine.

I couldn't find a great picture on DeviantArt that was made about Brave won the Oscar. It summed up the Pixar bias perfectly.

Meanwhile, here's a article that sums the problem up: https://www.cartoonbrew.com/award-seaso ... 09456.html

I'll be glad too if another studio wins for a change. Especially this year that Disney has only released sequels. I haven't seen Ralph Breaks the Internet yet so I can't judge it, but I found Incredibles 2 a bit underwhelming. I think it isn't bad for a sequel and it's still better than many films this year (animated or not), but I expected more from a sequel to The Incredibles.

20 films have advanced in the Visual Effects category at the Oscars. It's interesting The Nutcracker and Incredibles 2 made it through but not A Wrinkle in Time or Ralph Breaks the Internet.

The films in question are:

Ant-Man and the Wasp
Aquaman
Avengers: Infinity War
Black Panther
Bumblebee
Christopher Robin
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
First Man
Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Mary Poppins Returns
Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Mortal Engines
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Paddington 2
A Quiet Place
Ready Player One
Solo: A Star Wars Story

I may be wrong, but I think the films on that list are not all the films submitted for the award, but the ones that passed the first cut, because in the title it says these 20 titles "advance" in the VFX Oscar race. So probably Disney did submit A Wrinkle in Time and Ralph Breaks the Internet, but they weren't among the 20 selected.

They did say that but at the bottom they also said "preliminary list of films eligible for further awards consideration" so it seems to me it's really just a list of the eligible films. No one has voted on them yet; they simply determined their eligibility status. It doesn't make sense for Ralph Breaks the Internet to have been deemed ineligible but not Incredibles 2 so that's why I assumed Disney must have not submitted it.

^Yes, but around the same time last year and the year before they also announced the same number of films advancing in the category. If they were all the films submitted, the number wouldn't be the same every year and it wouldn't always be so round. Also, I think it would be bigger.
