Disney announced this afternoon that they have teamed up with producer Harvey Weinstein to develop a book-to-film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl.

The movie will be based on the first two books in the Artemis Fowl series. The second one is titled The Arctic Incident.

I read a couple of these books as a child although the only one I can remember much about is the first one. I always thought they were incredibly strange. I might go re-read them again from an adult's eye.

Director Kenneth Branagh has gathered a bunch of familiar crew members for his upcoming Artemis Fowl adaptation with composer Patrick Doyle, production designer Jim Clay (Children of Men, Murder on The Orient Express), cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos (Cinderella, Thor, Murder on The Orient Express), and stunt coordinator James O’Donnell (Black Mirror, Rogue One, Kick-Ass, Murder On The Orient Express). Fowl stars Judy Dench, Josh Gad, and newcomer Ferdia Shaw as Artemis. It’s expected begin shooting this March in Ireland with a release date of August 9th, 2019.

• Academy Award-winner Dame Judi Dench plays Commander Root, the leader of the reconnaissance division of the fairy police force called LEPrecon.
• Josh Gad plays Mulch Diggums, a kleptomaniac dwarf who tries to help in the rescue of Holly.
• Nonso Anozie (from Cinderella) plays Butler, the Fowl family bodyguard.
• Tamara Smart plays Butler’s niece Juliet.
• Miranda Raison plays Artemis’ mother Angeline.
• Other members of the cast include Josh McGuire, Hong Chau, Nikesh Patel, Michael Abubakar, Jake Davies, Rachel Denning, Matt Jessup, Sally Messham, Adrian Scarborough, and Simone Kirby.

I was in for this anyway (and use it as an excuse to read the books again), but now I have more incentive to see it with Gad and Dench involved.

I like that they mention Cinderella as Nonso Anozie's credit, but I'm sure more people remember him from Game of Thrones.

This is gonna bomb, isn't it? There has been very little interest online despite the teaser just premiering. The whole thing looks like a cross between Men in Black and Spy Kids. Has anyone read the books? Are they any good? 'Cause neither the trailer nor the poster piqued my interest.

I found it a bit intriguing. Well, more the synopsis than the trailer, but I also thought that it looks like the typical Disney movie that flops at the box office. I haven't read the books. I didn't even know about them until Disney announced they would make this adaptation. I was also wondering if they are good or whether they have many fans or not.

The opening scene gave me a Tomorrowland vibe. The narration with the digitally-altered voice was off-putting and the kid comes off obnoxious and unlikable. He seems like a little brat. Is that intentional? The poster made him look like a villain from The Matrix. The only thing I liked was that woman transforming. Is she supposed to be a fairy? In any case, I believe Disney made a mistake trying to adapt this book series. If they wanted to produce an adaptation based on a YA property they own, they should have gone with Kingdom Keepers. It has a bigger fanbase and utilizes classic Disney IP.

I knew about the book series but I was never interested in reading them. Maybe that'll change if I like this movie, but I agree that I can't see it doing well.

After how they've treated classic Disney in WIR2, I'd rather Disney stay far away from the Kingdom Keepers series.

But it wouldn't have been produced by WDAS or the Disney Channel. I believe Disney's theatrical, live-action division could have pulled it off.

After The Nutcracker adopted Lasseter's famous Pixar tropes, I don't believe the live-action division is at all immune to what goes on in the animated features.

I'm always craving non-remake live action movies from Disney, so I'm happy this is coming out. I'm not familiar with the books, but I am concerned. Hopefully there are a lot of kids now who have read the books who'd want to see this; I'm thinking, unfortunately, that the fairies aspect may turn off some male teenagers...

Since it's nighttime right now, I watched the teaser trailer on my phone w/ a red light filter, so I'm not sure if it was that, but the fairy transforming looked kind of creepy? I need to rewatch it on a computer.

I thought that The Nutcracker and the Four Realms & The BFG were terrific, even if that's not the common consensus, so I, too, don't have high hopes that this will do well, but I'm glad Disney is making it, but am worried for the future of Disney live action if it fails.

I wonder once Iger leaves if someone will be able to figure out how to be successful with Disney live action besides remakes...I'm thinking Mary Poppins Returns will do well...and I loved Christopher Robin, and it didn't do too, too poorly including worldwide box office, unless marketing costs took most of the earnings...maybe if Artemis Fowl does poorly, it'll be mostly sequels and remakes... Dick Cook + Rick Ross had been let go due to underperformance; will Sean Bailey be let go, or not because the live-action remakes make a lot of money...?

Yeah there’s a lot to be concerned about with this movie. They’re really not hitting it while the iron is hot. These were popular back 15 years ago for sure. But now I can’t really say. They just keep releasing more though, or at least were so that’s clearly a sign of longevity.

I think my issue with these books was always the fact that no one was a pleasant character. It was all a bunch of characters with awful attitudes grumping at each other acting as if everything were dire situations. Everyone is selfish and internally motivated. It’s a very odd series. I mean the book’s central character is basically a villain in and of himself. So seeing how this plays out is going to be quite interesting, especially with the fact that they’re combining the first two books which are VASTLY different in my recollection tone wise.

The one thing I will say is they definitely nailed the look. That fairy shot nails the odd aesthetic of the books.

Kenneth Branagh has more than proven himself a trustworthy director and literary adaptations are his specialty, so I'm sure this will be good.

Box-office wise, yeah, that could be a problem as the books aren't quite as popular and revered as they used to be. Disney even dropped this trailer with little fanfare. The trailer just suddenly appeared.
