Coming on this forum just depresses me now between all the un-necessary live action remakes, lack of 2D and crap DVD releases.

'Fifty Shades' Writer Kelly Marcel Tackling Disney's Live-Action 'Cruella' (Exclusive)

The studio is fast-tracking the project as it cements its live-action fairy tale empire, dating no fewer than four untitled films through 2020 in addition to several movies already set for release, including 'The Jungle Book' and 'Beauty and the Beast.'

British Fifty Shades of Grey screenwriter Kelly Marcel is attached to write Disney's Cruella, based on the steely and well-appointed villainess Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations.

Marcel is no stranger on the Disney lot, having written Savings Mr. Banks.

Doubtful. They'll probably just use make-up to make her look older.

With the right make-up I can see this working. Cruella from the animated movie wasn't all that old. She was a "school chum" of Anita so they must have been close in age. Glenn Close played her older, and while that worked amazingly, Victoria Smurfit played her young on Once Upon a Time and that portrayal is one of the best performances to come out of that show.

Emma is a great actress and I think she could really shine here.

I don't mind Emma Stone, and, while I'm not too enthused for another De Vil film, I do think she could fit in the role.

This is a prequel, too, right? Having her younger would make sense then.

Well, people do tend to forget that in the animated movie Anita and Cruella went to school together. Anita looks like she's in her early/mid 30s, so Cruella should be around that age too. (Glenn Close's Cruella was indeed older, but she was changed to be Anita's employer, not her friend from school.)

Emma Stone is 27, and since this movie is supposedly partly a prequel (like the Maleficent movie was), I think she's around the right age for a project like this. They can age her down (to play teenage Cruella) and they can age her up (to play 30-something Cruella).

She does look like the character somewhat (if they died her hair), but I'm not sure she'd pull it off.

Am I the only one hating the prequel formula? It has yet to deliver a proper story line. ..maleficent backstory did all but ruin the character...lion king 1 1/2 had its moments but felt derivative at best. Prometheus ruined what could have been a proper Alien based story. .. It's all lazy story work. ..and do we really need another Cruella movie? Why not give us an Ursula story of her days in the palace. ..yet another animated film (Ariels beginning ) that could have been so much better of properly treated

I imagine Hans was abused by his brothers and parents as a child, which caused his multiple personality disorder to be triggered when Anna attempted to kiss him at the end of the film. Unintentional double murder attempt.

Disney has found a director for the film and some new details have been revealed:

Mozart of the Jungle co-creator and theater director Alex Timbers is in negotiations to helm Cruella, Disney’s live-action re-imagining of the 101 Dalmatians character that will star Emma Stone.

Stone will play infamous villain Cruella De Vil in what is being billed as an origin story, set in the 1980s.

Cruella is described as having both strong fashion and music sensibilities, something that seems to be a natural fit for Timbers.

Doesn't the original take place in the 60s tho

wait are they trying to join together this film with the 90s remake, or are they just gonna modernize the story?

i dunno man i love the 80s but this could end up looking really kitsch.

I think it must be the former, then the 80s setting would make sense. And if it was indeed a prequel to the 90s remake, that would mean that unlike Maleficent, Cruella wouldn't be redeemed in the film.

A punk Cruella?

Still with Disney, and earlier this year, producer Andrew Gunn took the time to talk to us about his plans for Cruella, the forthcoming feature starring Emma Stone as the stony-hearted, puppy-loathing Cruella DeVil. The film is set in a punk-era London and has a screenplay by Kelly Marcel.
