Lasse Hallstrom is on board to direct a new big-screen version of The Nutcracker.

Disney Studios is developing the project, titled The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which adapts the classic ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky and the accompanying story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The classic story told of a young girl named Clara who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. When she goes to check on it later that night, the clock strikes midnight, and she finds herself thrust into a fantastical world where she is in the middle of a war between gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice.

I always imagined Disney Animation doing Nutcracker. Too bad it sounds like this is live action

Morgan Freeman is in negotiations to join Disney's live-action The Nutcracker.

Freeman will play the mysterious Drosselmeyer in the new film.

Casting call for lead role in new Disney feature film

Lucy Bevan Casting are looking for the young lead role in Disney's 'The Nutcracker', which is due to shoot in the Autumn 2016. Lasse Hallström ('Chocolat', 'The Hundred-Foot Journey', 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape’)is directing, and Mark Gordon and Lindy Goldstein are producing.

Set in the 1850s in Victorian England, the film is a live action retelling of the classic tale based on the story 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King' by E.T.A. Hoffman

Clara (Female) - aged 13-17 years

Lead role. Clever, creative and independent, Clara goes against female societal conventions of the period. At the beginning of the story she is lacking in confidence, struggling to cope with the death of her mother and trying to find her footing in the adult world. Uninterested in beauty and fashion, Clara is most herself when inventing contraptions and going on adventures; she is most comfortable in her own imagination. As she grows through the film we find her to be self sufficient, strong willed, curious, witty, inventive and ultimately confident in herself. She can be any height or ethnicity.

Disneyprincess11, I read Mackenzie Foy will be Clara. I writed in my last post I know this. I writed also Mackenzie Foy will turned 16 in November, so Clara will be a teen ager, not a 8-year old girl.

The casting call I reported above is from May-June 2016, therefore previous to the news about Mackenzie Foy.

Mirren will play a character named Mother Ginger.

“Spy” actress Miranda Hart has joined the cast of Disney’s new retelling of “The Nutcracker.”

Hart will play the fairy Dew Drop in what is described as a fun, comedic role for the film.
