I'm actually a little surprised we didn't get this soon. Still, I'm excited. I guess we won't be getting any more Toy Story specials now that Frozen is here.

This could be a lot of fun so I hope it's done well.
I really don't understand people getting upset about things like this because they always do it with their big hits. Off the top of my head The Lion King had:
The Lion King
The Lion King II: Simba's Pride
The Lion King 1½
85 episodes of the Timon and Pumbaa animated series
Character cameos in other Disney television series like House of Mouse
The Legend of the Lion King puppet stage show in Magic Kingdom
Festival of the Lion King live musical show in Animal Kingdom/Hong Kong Disneyland
Rafiki's Planet Watch in Animal Kingdom
Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable in EPCOT
The Lion King Celebration parade in Disneyland
The Lion King musical on Broadway
Most of these came out within 5 years of the initial release, and I'm sure there was more I'm forgetting.

The problem is that while TLK was a massive hit, Disney still gave attention to the other movies (minus Rescuers, which was going to have a TV show until Bianca's actress died).Lady Cluck wrote:really don't understand people getting upset about things like this because they always do it with their big hits.

Re: Frozen Animated TV Special (2017)
I know that they are using Frozen too much, but I think the film is very suitable for a Christmas special. I actually prefer this to the planned sequel. And I'm glad to know that Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton are going to direct it. I like everything they've done so far. I would've prefered they made a third Prep & Landing special instead of this though, but I'm glad they've been given a new project to work on.

well they need something to keep the movie in the publics mind while the sequel's being made. 2019 is a long way off.

Re: Frozen Animated TV Special (2017)
I don't agree with the impression that they're using Frozen too much. The movie came out in 2013, the short came out last year or the year before with Cinderella (2015), and this is coming out in 2017, the Broadway musical in 2018, and the first sequel in 2019. Everything that actually matters has been pretty spread out; not a big deal to me. I mean, what did anyone actually expect to happen with a movie that made more than a billion dollars?

Well, all of those recent films also had individual video games (not Disney Infinity), though they're mostly terrible
There was also Tiana's Showboat Jubilee! in the parks but it didn't last long obviously. Big Hero 6 and Wreck-It Ralph have a lot of possibilities for parks attractions and even tv series so I agree they could have done something there (obviously they're not getting stage/Broadway shows though).
And I doubt anyone wants Disney to start churning out cheap direct to video sequels again.

also I think the reason we've seen less done with the "boy" films is b/c they now have Marvel and Star Wars and rather focus on those for boys franchises. I think if they hadnt had those we'd be seeing more stuff being done with BH6 & WIR.
Re: Frozen Animated TV Special (2017)
Remembering that the Lion King and Beauty and the Beast Broadway musicals reached the stage only three years after the movies were released, I'm kind of surprised the Frozen musical isn't hitting Broadway until five years later. Although the Lopezes have been really hard at work on it over the past couple of years, so they're definitely not slouching.

Yes, that is definitely one of the reasons, and it's a shame. Big Hero 6, for example, would be perfect for a TV series.unprincess wrote:also I think the reason we've seen less done with the "boy" films is b/c they now have Marvel and Star Wars and rather focus on those for boys franchises. You wouldn't see any BH6 if Disney didn't have Marvel. BH6 is a marvel property.unprincess wrote:also I think the reason we've seen less done with the "boy" films is b/c they now have Marvel and Star Wars and rather focus on those for boys franchises. Most likely due to because Disney, I believe, only own two of the Broadway theater houses. One is occupied for Lion King which been going for more the 15 years, and the other is recent Aladdin. Usually when they add a new Disney Broadway production, they take out the newest one before (tarzan, Little Mermaid, Mary poppins). Aladdin just recently been in broadway now and is a huge success. I doubt Disney want cancel it so soon just add Frozen. Most likely they're giving Aladdin bit of time on broadway before adding Frozen to take over.estefan wrote:Remembering that the Lion King and Beauty and the Beast Broadway musicals reached the stage only three years after the movies were released, I'm kind of surprised the Frozen musical isn't hitting Broadway until five years later.

You're right! I didn't take that into account when I wrote my comment. But still, Disney prefers using the other more famous Marvel properties to Big Hero 6.Super Aurora wrote:You wouldn't see any BH6 if Disney didn't have Marvel. BH6 is a marvel property.

Re: Frozen Animated TV Special (2017)
Personally I think both Aladdin and The Lion King were quite milked during their heydays, more than Pocahontas and Hunchback. Aladdin had a sequel and an entire show which were released two years afterwards (and a third finale). At least The Lion King had the Timon and Pumbaa show which was released a year afterwards, but it's sequel (as well as those for Pocahontas and Hunchback) were released several years afterwards.
Due to their serious nature, it's not strange that both Pocahontas and Hunchback never had so much follow-up shorts or series besides their sequels. And personally, I wouldn't mind this to happen. I would've liked a series about Pocahontas which was akin to The Little Mermaid-series; showing her life before the settlers coming up (I know I've probably said this before, but forgive me ). I wouldn't mind to see shorts or a series about Hunchback, but that would've been harder due to it's source material (but at least something more compelling than a circus devise).
As for the Timon and Pumbaa series, though I liked it, it was stylistically a departure from it's naturalistic predecessor. The series had almost a Ren & Stimpy-style to it and Timon and Pumbaa were perhaps too anthropomorphed at times.
But it's not strange that Frozen gets a Holliday special, due to it's snowy setting (duuuh). I was waiting for it to happen

The TV special is going to be Olaf-centric. Is anyone surprised?

Well, at least Frozen Fever could take credit for not being Olaf-centric, though it shouldn't come as a surprise that this one will be.
