Sister Act 3

Post by Sotiris »

I would be on board if they were doing a film adaptation of the Broadway musical but this is just another pointless cash-grab.

I'm looking forward to it, as far as mindless comedy goes (just like the original).

The remake is still on.
Whoopi Goldberg has confirmed a new Sister Act is in the making – and we couldn’t be any more excited. The star spoke about the project while on Good Morning Britain, and revealed that it is heading in a different direction. Speaking of the possibility of a third film, she said: "We’ve been all over Disney begging. They’ve decided that they’re going to go in a different direction with Sister Act. So it won’t be Sister Act 3; it will be a brand new rendition of Sister Act, and I guess I’ll walk through a scene and that’s how they’ll say I was part of it."

It's quite likely the movie will end-up on Disney's streaming service.
Q: Do you think if they do it, it will be streaming?

Skyler Shuler: That’s where I believe it goes.

“Sister Act 3” is ramping up development, tapping “Insecure” co-executive producer Regina Hicks and “Star” showrunner Karin Gist to pen the sequel for Disney’s newly named streaming service, Disney+.

Plot details of “Sister Act 3” are being kept under wraps, but the original starred Whoopi Goldberg and centered on her Reno lounge singer, who goes into protective custody at a San Francisco convent and pretends to be a nun after a mob boss puts a hit on her. Goldberg has said she would cameo in this pic, but that a new cast would put a fresh spin on the original.

Regina Hicks, an executive producer on HBO’s Insecure, and Karin Gist, showrunner of Fox’s Star, are penning the next chapter in what began as the saga of Deloris Van Cartier for Disney+. Plot details are currently unknown, but the biggest question remains: will Whoopi Goldberg make an official return? Sadly, it doesn’t seem that way, despite what she said in the past.

“It is our understanding that this is not a continuation and Whoopi is not involved,” a rep for the actress told EW.

The Chronicles of Van Cartier: A Sister Act Story, showing how the woman we know came to be her rotfl

just kidding, but I see no point in making a new 'spin' in a movie already done. Spin it further and call it something else. There, you have a new movie. I would be on board if they were making a film of the Broadway musical, but this... meh

I would also be interested in it if was an adaptation of the Broadway musical. Or if it was a continuation and it was starred by Whoopi Goldberg, but not in just a remake of the first film.

Not sure if this is supposed to be remake, a sequel or a requel.

Is a requel like an inbetweenquel? Whatever it ends up being, I trust that it'll be good, with Whoopi on board. I don't think she'd let this property be mistreated.

No, it's something different. An "inbetweenquel" is an interquel. It's a new work of fiction set chronologically between two of its predecessors. For example, Rogue One is an interquel as it's set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. A midquel is a new work set during the timeline of one of its predecessors. For example, Tarzan 2, Bambi 2, The Fox and the Hound 2 are all midquels to their respective originals. Ironically, even though Pumbaa calls The Lion King 1/2 an inbetweenquel in the film's teaser, it's actually a midquel.

A requel is both a reboot/remake and a sequel. Sometimes it's referred to as a "soft reboot/remake". It usually preserves continuity of the previous installments, but focuses on an entire new cast of characters. It also usually repeats the same narrative beats and themes of the original. This type of continuation has been in vogue for a while. Studios love it because they can use it to breath new life into an aging franchise as well as exploit the name recognition and nostalgia surrounding it. The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road, Independence Day: Resurgence, Men in Black International have been characterized as requels. Disney has been trying to get into the requel business as well. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Tron 3 have both been reported to be requels.

Mary Poppins Returns is a “requel.” You can draw a line from each 2018 song to a song from the 1964 films. The story beats are mostly the same, the only differences are the introduction of a clear villain character and an ending action sequence which is just endemic among live action Disney movies these days. P.L. Travers’ whole series of Mary Poppins novels were very much “requels,” too, so I always expected as much and certainly preferred this over a true remake. But ultimately Mary Poppins Returns feels like Mary Poppins (1964) with a wooden leg.

^ Thanks you guys! I don't remember having heard that term before, but maybe it's been used here and I either asked what it meant or assumed it meant inbetweenquel (omg, midquel I have heard of but had forgotten, but I did not know the difference- I do think I got the term inbetweenquel from TLK 1 1/2 so that's funny that it's a midquel instead. :p).

Whatever this movie becomes, as long as it's fun and has music it should be good...

While I agree with you on everything else, I personally wouldn't characterize "Mary Poppins Returns" as a requel, mainly because the lead character of the original is still the lead in the continuation. With requels you get a new lead, even if the old one makes an appeareance or has a small, supporting role in it.

I’d counter that the role of Mary Poppins is so associated with Julie Andrews’ Oscar winning performance, that Emily Blunt taking the role is essentially the same as having a new lead character. Had she signed the contract, Julie Andrews’ cameo as The Balloon Lady would have had a similar impact to Mark Hamill’s cameo at the end of The Force Awakens.

"Get the gang together" sounds like it could be a proper sequel. I really hope so. It wouldn't be the same without Whoopi Goldberg.

I can't stand these silly terms like "soft reboot", "requel" and "legacy sequel." In my view, you're either a sequel, a reboot or a remake. They're very simple definitions and make perfect sense. You don't need to make up these new terms to muddy the waters.

If it acknowledges the events of the previous films and is clearly set in the same continuity like Jurassic World, the new Star Wars movies, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Tron: Legacy, Mary Poppins Returns, Men in Black International and Mad Max: Fury Road do, then it's a sequel.

If it completely erases the earlier timeline and starts anew, like Batman Begins, Casino Royale, Man of Steel, the 2016 Ghostbusters and the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles do, then it's a reboot.

If you retell the same story with a new cast of actors playing the same or similar characters, then you're a remake. Ocean's 11, Bad News Bears, many of the Disney live-action remakes, etc.

Although you also have the unique case of the newer Star Trek movies. That's a series that qualifies as a reboot, sequel and prequel as it's set before the main timeline we're familiar with, but in-universe time travel results in it being completely erased and starting again and the presence of older Spork arriving from the future means it still acknowledges the events of the other television series and movies happened (Star Trek Into Darkness even has OG Spock mention the events of The Wrath of Khan).

You also have sequels that selectively remove some films from the timeline, based on the choices of the director. Superman Returns, Halloween 2018 (and Halloween H20 for that matter) and even Jaws: The Revenge do this. But they're still direct sequels in my book.

So, in my mind, if Whoopi Goldberg reprises her role as Deloris and acknowledges the events of the previous films happened, then it's a sequel.

The third film and Whoopi Goldberg's involvement were confirmed at Disney's Investor Day presentation:
Sister Act 3, the third film in the beloved “Sister Act” series, is in development. Whoopi Goldberg is on board to star and produce, with Tyler Perry also signed on as a producer on the project. Sister Act 3 will premiere on Disney+.

The investors day presentation confirmed this is a direct sequel, so I guess that means the remake got shelved. It's interesting that this exact same thing happened with the Hocus Pocus remake. I think in both cases fan demand is what drove the change.

^I think you're right. I'm very glad they'll be sequels and not remakes, especially when the original stars are still alive and willing to reprise their roles.
