That sounds really cool. What you describe reminds me of a Gobelins short. Did it look something like that?SWillie! wrote:I'm personally guessing that this will be completely CG, but in a very flat style that makes it look like it could be 2d. Patrick Osborne did a short test called "Pet" before he started work on Paperman in all CG, but it was lit in a way that made each individual frame look like a visdev painting. While it didn't use any traditional animation, it was still really awesome.

Re: New Disney Short "Feast"
There's definitely some similarities there with the Gobelins film - mostly in the way the characters themselves look - that flat but moving in 3d space effect. This one is going for a watercolor look, whereas Patrick's test wasn't as textured - lots of flat bold shapes. Almost like the "Almost There" sequence in PatF, but maybe not quite that flat. Think something in between Almost There and the final look of Paperman.

Re: New Disney Short "Feast"
Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jim-hill/ ... 06900.htmlOsborne first came to John Kahrs' attention after he created an experimental animation test at WDAS. Consequently John recruited Patrick to come be the head of animation on that Oscar-winning short. Mind you, another key member of the Feast production team is Jeff Turley. Jeff was the production designer on Paperman. And he and Osborne are teaming up on this new Walt Disney Animation Studios short.

With Jeff Turley as the production designer, Josh Staub as Vfx supervisor, Brian Scott as the Head of character animation, and Marlon West as the head of effects animation, I can’t wait to show the animation community at the Annecy International Festival on June 10th.
Source: http://disneyvideo.altervista.org/forum ... ntry714580A note on the technique. At the conference, one of the leaders of the lighting explained how it was done. They have developed a new technique to flatten the 3D rendering, in addition to a series of steps to shape the light. The result is to see digital concept art move. So it was not really their intention to give roundness and depth to the animation, something rather obvious in Paperman. Here everything is reduced to colored shapes in motion. The Meander software was used very little (if Paperman used it on 20 people, here it was used on one), only for the lines of the face and expressions (otherwise absent in the body where shapes and colors prevail.)

I will be there.
Re: New Disney Short "Feast"
The short is premiering today at Annecy and according to Jerry Beck's review, Cartoon Brew was right about it using a similar technique to Paperman:
Visually, the film builds upon techniques introduced in Paperman (Osborne was that film's animation supervisor). This time, Feast is in color - and its look skews closer to production story sketch or color keys, looking like brush strokes in motion.
"There are two wolves and they are always fighting. One is darkness and despair. The other is light and hope. Which wolf wins? Whichever one you feed." - Casey Newton, Tomorrowland
Re: New Disney Short "Feast"
And here is Cartoon Brew's review of "Feast"
As suggested in the sparse teaser image that has been released for the film (above), the film uses some of the same non-photorealistic rendering techniques that were explored in the studio’s earlier Oscar-winning short Paperman, but achieves a more lush graphic effect. Unlike Paperman, which relied heavily on character outlines, Feast is more aggressive in its stylization, minimizing the exterior line and steeping itself in the possibilities of color, shape, and form. If you’ve ever looked at the concept art in an ‘art of’ book and wondered why the finished film couldn’t look like that, you’ll wonder no longer. This film is concept art come to life.
...
It’s certainly Disney’s strongest effort during this nascent revival of short filmmaking, and suggests exciting possibilities for how the studio could blend hand-drawn craftsmanship and digital technology in future projects.

I'm rarely big on animation with no outlines or shading. If you're going to drop one, it should have the other in my opinion, it needs something to hold the shapes together and imply depth.
