A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

Post by disneyprincess11 »

I don't know if it's going to be life-action or the next animated project: But, Jennifer Lee's next Disney movie is A Wrinkle in Time!

Live-action or animated, I'll definitely be seeing this. I do have the TV film they made a few years back, but I'd enjoy another adaptation. I don't love the series, but I do like the first book, AWiT.

Published in 1962, “Wrinkle in Time” was one of Lee’s favorite novels as a child, and she impressed Disney executives with her take on the project, which emphasizes a strong female-driven narrative and creatively approaches the science fiction and world-building elements of the book.
This kind of talk makes me feel optimistic.

The 2003 adaptation was pretty disappointing, particularly considering the caliber of some of the talent involved. I'm going to trust there's a stronger, more authentic vision informing this production as it moves forward.

(Minor spoiler)

This is an excellent chance to portray an extreme dystopia. Technology has come a long way since the book was written, including surveillance technology and A.I. There could be cameras and microphones in every home, every building, every street, including nanobots who each picks up a tiny piece of information before it is put together into a whole picture by the swarm. Machine based intelligence notice if anyone moves or act in a suspicious way, if someone says something they are not supposed to or even the tone of their voice. Children will be tested by putting them in a chair and measure their brain waves when they are shown certain words, pictures and sentences while the brainwaves and the activity in their brain is monitored to see which areas are activated or not and how little hand how much, and then given a treatment if the results are not satisfying enough.
It would just be cool to see how far one could push the idea of a total dystopia and the most extreme surveillance society you could imagine.

I never saw Selma, so I can't comment on DuVernay's directing abilities, but I'm happy to see that the film will come to fruition. A Wrinkle in Time is one of my favorite books, and the 2003 film was a major let down. I'm hoping this film will be a better representation of L'Engle's book.

Oprah is joining the film as Mrs. Which.

I hope this does well because I like the novel, but I'm also not a huge fan of Disney's uninspired live action remakes of their animated films so far and I want them to keep developing films based on outside source material. The BFG bombing hurts that, so hopefully this one gets an Oprah bump!

Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling are in negotiations to star in A Wrinkle in Time, Ava DuVernay and Disney’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic children’s book.

The Newbery Medal-winning book centers on a young girl who finds herself on an interplanetary journey with a schoolmate and her younger brother to locate her missing father, a scientist. They are aided on their quest by a trio of supernatural beings, Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which.

Witherspoon will play Mrs. Whatsit, a former celestial being who looks like a grandmotherly hobo, and Kaling will play the literature-quoting Mrs. Who. The duo will join Oprah Winfrey, who is already on board to play Mrs. Which.

That’s wonderful news because, you know, the first thing I think of when I see Reese Witherspoon is “grandmotherly”!

Rising Actress Storm Reid Nabs Starring Role in Ava DuVernay's 'A Wrinkle in Time'

The Newbery Medal-winning book centers on Meg Murry, a young girl traumatized by the disappearance of her scientist father years before. She finds herself on an interplanetary journey with a schoolmate and her younger brother to find her father. They are aided by a trio of supernatural beings, Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Winfrey).

In a nod to the diversity of the modern world, Disney has made L’Engle’s main characters black or mixed race, making the Murry family a mixed-race one. The studio is looking for a nonwhite actor to play the schoolmate, Calvin O’Keefe. And the Mrs. characters already showcase a range of races.
UPDATE

Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling have confirmed their participation in the film:

Can we change the title? It's pretty misleading now, since Jennifer Lee isn't directing.

She did write the script, though...

I just hope the movie will be better than the novel. If someone loved the book, then it's great that it gave them a good time. But I read it myself a year ago or so, and i can honestly say that I don't understand what is so special about it. Not that it was bad, but it wasn't great either. If someone wants to share why they think the novel is amazing, feel free to do so.

(Of course, I could have posted this on Reddit too, but then I would have been attacked and my post downvoted by anonymous downvoters. This board is much more civilized, and there is luckily no annoying downvote functions)

I tried reading the book a while back and I, too, found it a slog. I think film might be the best medium to tell this story. The author seemed like she wanted to portray these amazing visuals, but in book format, the worlds were revealed in clunky exposition. I also felt the kids didn't sound much like kids.

But I'm looking forward to the movie. Being a film, Ava DuVernay can portray the various worlds without having to describe it to us via sloppy exposition. I also trust Jennifer Lee and the child actors to make the children sound like actual children.
