Go over to Cartoon Brew for images and trailers for all 45 shorts.

Although, Disney has submitted both Pixar's "La Luna" and WDAS' "The Ballad of Nessie", they're not promoting "Nessie" at all and they haven't even included it in their official 'For Your Consideration' website. :x

Neither Toy Story Toon submitted either. Have they forgotten that <i>Mike's New Car</i> was nominated and two of Blue Sky's <i>Ice Age</i> shorts as well? I guess they didn't want to add competition to the one they're clearly backing (<i>La Luna</i>), which is one the public won't know. Why not just hold that off for next year and try to land a nomination for <i>Nessie</i>?

I'm sure they will put it up eventually. The Muppets wasn't on there at first, either.

Besides, these are the shorts and Academy members are required to watch all of them in order to be allowed to choose the nominees. So, if enough voters feel Ballad of Nessie is one of their five shorts of the year, it will get in. They all will have seen it.

Today [November 19] there's the Academy screening of animated shorts in NY - 45 of them. This is the first vote on the full list of those that have successfully qualified for the competition. It certainly doesn't mean that any of them are good; it just means that they've followed the rules.

Today's voters will select a group of 6 to 10 films to make the short list. These will be open to another voting in January to narrow it down to the five nominees. 45 shorts will probably take about six to seven hours to screen. All in one sitting with a one hour break for lunch.

10 Animated Shorts Move Ahead in 2011 Oscar Race
http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleas ... 1201a.html
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 animated short films will advance in the voting process for the 84th Academy Awards®. Forty-four pictures had originally qualified in the category.

The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production company:

•"Dimanche/Sunday," Patrick Doyon, director (National Film Board of Canada)

•"The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore," William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg, directors (Moonbot Studios LA, LLC)

•"I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat," Matthew O'Callaghan, director and Sam Register, executive producer (Warner Bros. Animation Inc.)

•"La Luna," Enrico Casarosa, director (Pixar Animation Studios)

•"Luminaris," Juan Pablo Zaramella, director (JPZtudio)

•"Magic Piano," Martin Clapp, director and Hugh Welchman, producer (BreakThru Films)

•"A Morning Stroll," Grant Orchard, director and Sue Goffe, producer (Studio AKA)

•"Paths of Hate," Damian Nenow, director (Platige Image)

•"Specky Four-Eyes," Jean-Claude Rozec, director and Mathieu Courtois, producer (Vivement Lundi!)

•"Wild Life," Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, directors (National Film Board of Canada)

The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting in screenings held in New York and Los Angeles. Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco in January 2012. The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

As you can see "The Ballad of Nessie" did not make it into the short list. Could this be because of Disney's utter lack of promotion whatsoever? :x There wasn't even a single ad for 'Nessie' and it was not even included in Disney's 'for your consideration' website.

On the contrary, La Luna was heavily promoted with new publicity interviews, an ad, additional screenings, and was included in Disney's 'for your consideration' website.

I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat wasn't given any promotion by Warner Brothers, but that got in.

Once again, it should be stated that the voters in the short categories have to watch every single submission. So, if The Ballad of Nessie didn't make the short-list, it was not because of lack-of-promotion. It was because they thought these 10 shorts were better. And have you seen any of these? I will be positive and say that I haven't seen. They could all be better shorts than Ballad of Nessie for all we know.

It did get some promotion:

http://www.animationmagazine.net/events ... -premiere/

And let's not forget that it's playing in theatres now everywhere which is the best promotion of all.

If that all there's to it, then why do studios bother with promoting their films to begin with? Marketing, promotion, and politics are always factors in award shows. In any case, Disney should have treated their submitted shorts equally and try to push for 'Nessie' as well. There's no excuse for that.
estefan wrote:And have you seen any of these? They could all be better shorts than "Ballad of Nessie" for all we know.
I've only seen "I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat" and I'm telling you it's not better than "Nessie". It's merely descent. I found the pacing too frantic, there are a lot of awkward camera angles (to capitalize on the 3D naturally), and the song is not very good either. But the worst of all it's that I did not find it funny at all. The attempts at humour and the visual gags fall flat which is something you don't expect from a good Looney Toons short since their appeal is mainly based on humor and gags and not emotion and 'heart'. However, the animation is top-notch, the character designs are on-model and the personalities remain faithful.
