Duster, if Disney are about to adapt something more adult than the usual family fare, then ...
BRING IT ON!
I'm drooling for it. I'm shaking with excitement. An adult WDAS film is just what I want! Nay, it's like one of my dreams! I want want want want want want want want want want it. For real! OMG! Yay! Tralala! Bonky bomp!
*passes out*
No really. Silliness aside, I think dark material would strongly benefit WDAS right now.
Duster, Disney films should not be like Disney films. There is, in fact, no such thing as a Disney film.
Disney films should be everything and anything imaginable. Anything that will make a good animated film. Maybe one day management will allow the artists at WDAS to make the film they want to make, even if it's rated R.

Discworld is probably the most adult thing they are going to do now...
The reason it is so un-Disney is because it's so irreverent to things in life, things Disney has stood for.
Goliath, np, your wrong about all of that. I like Discworld. I also did not mean that those things were from a long time ago, but rather, those things were what everyone, even children, had heard of, they were stories meant for everyone. Hunchback may not have been, but it was not trying to be so irreverent towards life.
Julian Carter there is such thing as a Disney film. If you think all they are is good, quality animated entertainment, what seperates them from the other quality animated entertainment out there? Remember, there's even a book out there called "The Disney Version".
The answer is the Disney essence that makes Disney films. Let's see if it can work on something that is very, very un-Disney...

Yeah, it's called Lilo & Stitch. And The Emperor's New Groove, too.Disney Duster wrote: The answer is the Disney essence that makes Disney films. Let's see if it can work on something that is very, very un-Disney...
And that's all I'm going to say on the matter. I don't particularly care for talking to brick walls.

I watched a Discworld movie last autumn called The Colour of Magic. I think it's a mix of Monty Python and Harry Potter. The villain played by Tim Curry made me think of Ratcliffe in Disney Pocahontas. It was my first taste of Discworld and I was intrigued. Eventually, I'll get around to watching the other movies and reading the series. Also when this 2D film is released, I'll go see it.

Not quite. Not when people saw Emporer's New Groove was more like Warner Brothers. And not when Stitch was, well, what he was in the beginning. But it worked on the rest of the parts of those films, I guess.estefan wrote:Yeah, it's called Lilo & Stitch. "Golden Opportunities"!
Dear Disney Enthusiasts,
With regards to fapping, I believe that fapping is something that one can easily do WITHOUT a computer...
With regards to Disney's next 2D animated movie, I think that The Disney Company should take my suggestion, and turn my idea for "Golden Opportunities" (The Rumpelstiltskin Story) into a movie...
Thank you in advance for your replies.

Re: "Golden Opportunities"!
Are you calling it "Golden Opportunities" because of the "Tangled" name? I wish it could have the original, classic name...

Well, I've not read the book at all, but from what I've read on Wikipedia and the Blue Sky Disney blog, the basic plot of Mort is a hero trying to save a princess from an inevitable death. The idea of trying to dodge fate and death is a very common theme in folklore and literature, ranging from the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and numerous fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty being a well-known case, but also the Grimms' Godfather Death and Andersen's The Story of a Mother) to Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Ingmar Bergman's film The Seventh Seal. If such a theme has existed since Antiquity and has been a perennial in folklore and the arts ever since, then it obviously speaks to many a person.Disney Duster wrote:The reason it is so un-Disney is because it's so irreverent to things in life, things Disney has stood for.
As for being "too adult", have you ruled out the possibility that there could be a bit of bowdlerising and self-censorship going on? Many of the adaptations ever produced by the Disney studio distil a lot of the trauma often found in the originals to a more family-friendly level, even though some of the darkness does remain (or is momentarily heightened).
And I honestly don't think that we're going to get a very faithful translation that will delve to much into the exact mythology of Discworld. They're only taking one shot at one book from the series, so there's not much point in half of the film being explanations of details when there's bound to be no follow-up. In fact, I think the basic plot could even be taken completely out of the Discworld universe and placed in an entirely different setting for reasons already implied.
And the "Disney essence" is an ambiguous and subjective term, only coined by a forum member here to get a discussion along the lines of "does Disney mean a certain thing?" going...Disney Duster wrote:The answer is the Disney essence that makes Disney films.

My NaNoWriMo for this year is about dodging fate and death.Wondy wrote:The idea of trying to dodge fate and death is a very common theme in folklore and literature, ranging from the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and numerous fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty being a well-known case, but also the Grimms' Godfather Death and Andersen's The Story of a Mother) to Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Ingmar Bergman's film The Seventh Seal. Agreed. Plus, given that Sky One already has a few Discworld TV movies under their belt (with plans for more?), I don't see Disney trying to take an established franchise and making it their own. Sure, we'll get the standard video game and tie-in merch and character meet-n-greets. But I doubt we'll see "Mort: The Animated Series" unless it deviates from the Discworld universe and stories.Wondy wrote:And I honestly don't think that we're going to get a very faithful translation that will delve to much into the exact mythology of Discworld. To be fair, Neal was the first one to use the term "Disney Essence" on this forum although you wouldn't think it based on the past few months.Wondy wrote:And the "Disney essence" is an ambiguous and subjective term, only coined by a forum member here to get a discussion along the lines of "does Disney mean a certain thing?" going...Disney Duster wrote:The answer is the Disney essence that makes Disney films.
But yes, there is no objective definition of the "essence". It's based on personal experience, preference, reflections, etc. of Disney rather than some all-purpose Grade-A classification.

They missed an opportunity to do something original by firing Chris Sanders off of American Dog.DisneyAnimation88 wrote:Why do some people think that they know what types of films Disney should be making? I'm excited for the future of Disney animation if they are focusing on more original projects like Mort and King of the Elves.
Maybe they're now understanding that generic comedies will only take them so far.

Agreed. May I ask...what does NaNoWriMo mean?Escapay wrote:My NaNoWriMo for this year is about dodging fate and death.
Oh yeah, I was going to mention other adaptations, must have forgot. I'm not sure if Sky are making any more films, and the gaps between films have been around the two year mark. Also, Cosgrove Hall (British animation studio, famous for making "Count Duckula", "Danger Mouse" and other such cult children's shows) made a few of the Discworld books into some animated specials for Channel 4 back in the late 90s as well, I remember. I never saw them either, but I remember seeing the VHS editions on sale. Either way, it proves that they can't really make a necessarily definitive Discworld film.Escapay wrote:Plus, given that Sky One already has a few Discworld TV movies under their belt (with plans for more?), I don't see Disney trying to take an established franchise and making it their own.
Hmm...imagine the commotion that'd be caused by having Death as a walk-around character...Escapay wrote:Sure, we'll get the standard video game and tie-in merch and character meet-n-greets.

NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. Basically, you've got 30 days to write a novel of 50,000 words (1667/day). It's a lot of fun, because it celebrates the joy of writing rather than the actual quality of it (their slogan is "No Plot? No Problem!"). I first did it last year but it fell by the wayside and I never finished the novel (and to be honest, I didn't like where it was going either), but this year I'm hoping to actually finish this time.

Maybe the Disney essence can transform this one. But it will have to be transformed a lot. Like you said Wonderlicious, it can't be a "Discworld film", and this is another reason I don't want them to do it. Because Discworld has it's own universe, and I feel Disney has their own universe. I know you could say each Disney film has it's own universe, but Discworld is something...else, I don't know how to explain it. It reminds me of how Disney bought Marvel.
It's like Disney is becoming anything, like it has no identity...
As for the Disney essence, will everyone except this?:
It is something that exists on it's own with it's own definition (perhaps even only in Walt's mind/spirit). But people can change it's form with their...whatever Escapay listed. But we should still try to get the essence, not give up and say "whatever they want" "Disney can become anything" "forget identity, who cares about identity?"
Actually, I really good comparison is there is probably a Discworld essence that only exists in the creator's mind. But after he died, would he let people make more Discworld things, if they tried to tap into the essence?
