Films that COULD'VE won Best Animated Feature (before 2001)
Films that COULD'VE won Best Animated Feature (before 2001)
So I had an idea for a fun project but I know there's no way I could do this by myself.
We all know that the Best Animated Feature oscar category didnt come into play until 2001. By then it was practically too late for Disney 2D animated as things started to...well you know.
But I thought it would fun to list all the animated feature films that BEFORE 2001 would've been nominated had the Best Animated Feature category was created sooner. Then pick out which film would've most likely won it.
I know there are some cases where Disney would not have won but for the most part every single Disney 2D film prior to 2001 would've likely been nominated at the very least.
And very likely since Beauty and the Beast was the only 2D animated film to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar, it probably would've won the Best Animated Feature if there was one in 1991-92.
Thoughts?

I think it's probably easier to list the times when Disney would have lost
1988 - Oliver & Company vs. Grave of the Fireflies vs. My Neighbour Totoro vs. Akira
1997 - Hercules vs. Anastasia vs. Princess Mononoke vs. Perfect Blue
Those two are definite losses. There are other times that they would have possibly lost but unlikely.

What about Grave of the Fireflies instead of The Pagemaster, Pooh's Grand Adventure instead of Cats Don't Dance and A Monkey's Tale instead of South Park. I'd probably say that Ghost in the Shell would win over Hunchback. I've never seen the altered Warriors of the Wind version but Nausicaa would certainly win over An American Tail.
2000: Howl's Moving Castle
Overall, storywise and animation, this is a superior film to the rest.
1999: The Iron Giant
I think this would have won. Likely surprising many, especially those who never saw it. It is really a fantastic story. UNLESS, Princess Mononoke was nominated that year.
1998: The Prince of Egypt
Music, the animation style, and of course the story would have likely helped this one to win
1997: Anastasia
I think mostly because of the music. Once Upon the December hands down is one of the most beautiful pieces of music to come from an animated movie for a long time. I always felt that song deserved the Oscar over Titanic's theme. Again, if Princess Mononoke was nominated that year, that would all go out the window.
1996:The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Music and the story would see this one win. A lot of drama for a Disney picture
1995: Toy Story
At the time, it was a technical masterpiece, but mostly, it was a fantastic story and the voice work was so perfect.
1994: The Lion King
Nuff said.
1993: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Visually stunning, the music is fantastic, the story is very original, I would bet it would have won
1992: Aladdin
Like Lion King
1991: Beauty and the Beast
Considering this was nominated for Best Picture, it certainly would have won.
1990: The Rescuers Down Under
Marahute is a gorgeous piece of animation. McLeach is a fantastic and very underrated villain. The story was great.
1989: The Little Mermaid
I think Kiki might give Ariel a run for her money, but in the end, Ariel would come out on top.
1988: The Land Before Time vs. My Neighbor Totoro
Seriously, can't decide which of these WOULD win. I would want to see LBT win though
1987: The Brave LIttle Toaster
The music is great as is the story, I think it would win.
1986: An American Tail
The music of course. The family drama and story of immigrant mice, as a metaphor for what real immigrants went through, I am sure it would have won
1985: The Black Cauldron
The others seemed more like fluff. I would bet this would be the winner

I'm going by Amy's list + adding a few of my own. The bolded titles are my choices for the winning movies. Also, before 1995, I doubt there'd be enough (good) movies to even make the nominees list, but I'll just play along.
2000:
- Chicken Run
- Dinosaur
- The Emperor's New Groove
- The Road to El Dorado
- Titan A.E.
1999:
- Fantasia 2000
- The Iron Giant
- South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
- Tarzan
- Toy Story 2
1999 was exceptionally strong year for movies, both live-action and animated. So, even though "The Iron Giant" is a clear winner here, I wouldn't be disappointed if any of the other four took the award.
1998:
- Antz
- A Bug's Life
- Kirikou and the Sorceress
- Mulan

Pooh's Grand Adventure was DTV film, hence it wouldn't be up for anything!yamiiguy wrote:What about Grave of the Fireflies instead of The Pagemaster, Pooh's Grand Adventure instead of Cats Don't Dance and A Monkey's Tale instead of South Park. my be the should invent DTV Animated film award catagory but that would be pretty dry.milojthatch wrote:Pooh's Grand Adventure was DTV film, hence it wouldn't be up for anything!yamiiguy wrote:What about Grave of the Fireflies instead of The Pagemaster, Pooh's Grand Adventure instead of Cats Don't Dance and A Monkey's Tale instead of South Park.
