I can't wait until the Blu Ray the DVD was literally one of the worst restorations I've seen noise and off colors all over.

Well, I didn't think the restoration was horrible, but it did seem a bit inconsistent when I first watched it. It was especially annoying when it would flicker between clear and blurry during the same shot.

Also, one of the things I don't like about DVDs/restorations in general is that it seems like everything becomes too bright--like all the shadow's been sucked out of it (B&tB PE was the biggest example of this, though I feel TLM was affected somewhat during Ursula's scenes).

I heard that LOWRY actually didn't do this restoration which would probably be why

Actually I thought the most recent release looked too dark; some of the inking detail is lost when she transforms into a human.

The details of her face are pretty much gone in the restoration. :p

I honestly can't see much difference in those two images, except the PE seems like a lot of red has been added to the background. I like the way it was a little better, though I'm not an expert on what the "right" way it should be is. :?

I'm guessing a lot of it will depend on your monitor and its settings, but I can clearly see Ariel's face in the top image while her skin has been darkened so much in the bottom one that I can barely see her eyes, nose, etc.

And yes, the bottom image is more red overall; I'm not sure which one myself is more "right" but I'm leaning more toward the palette of the top pic. It feels more correct to me, but that's admittedly just a personal preference and based on the overall palette I remember from the first theatrical run (and even the old merchandise/screencaps used in books, etc.) . . . anyway, it's something I'm not going to make a huge fuss over.

That's the trouble with comparing screencaps, not knowing for sure what the original is really supposed to look like, and it seems everyone has a different opinion or memory of the original. But I do have to wonder why a character's face is practically obliterated through what's supposed to be a state-of-the-art restoration.

Are you kidding?! There's a HUGE difference. In the platinum, you cant see anything of Ariel's face and most of Flounders expression is gone.

I sometimes wonder if they deliberately darkened this whole segment because of the nudity.

Snagged enigmawing's screencaps and brightened them up in a photo editting program so Ariel and Flounder's facial features could be picked out. Use your hands to block out the light background of the site on either side of the pictures to see better.

Well, they put a huge shadow over Ariel's .... to cover it up. But then again, why did they use a close-up of that area? Had they not done that, they wouldn't have needed that shadow. :P

There, all fixed!

To be honest, I'm really surprised that I never heard any complaints about this part of the movie, whether it be over the editing done with darkening/adjusting the contrast or the fact that it was there in the first place. Especially when you consider the scrutiny over scenes like the priest's knee later in the film or the complaints over Jessica's "exposure" in Roger Rabbit.

Engimawing's probably right, that it might have something to do with different monitors (meaning you might as well ignore me :D ). Because I can't see facial features in either of the caps. The only real difference I can see is an alteration of the color.

I'm gonna go with what Sky Syndrome did (thanks for the idea :D) and show a couple of adjustments for the sake of curiosity:

Whoops reposted something I already posted.

Hm, well...The Little Mermaid needs to be done, better, too. Really like, no Disney restoration seems to be perfect. I even think Snow White has a little bit of that "clown color" Marky talked about, I mean the apple's orange in a lot of scenes...

But yea we should be seeing Ariel's face. And now Flounder's eyes went from green to blue? Like Ariel's tail changed to green? UGH...
