Favorite Golden Era Stars

Post by Jay »

Who are some of your favorite stars from the 20s, 30's, 40's and 50s?

For the ladies I love Judy Garland, Vivien Leigh, Barbara Stanwyck(painfully underrated), Audrey, Marilyn, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, and Betty Hutton. Oh and Lucille Ball, Eleanor Parker(also painfully underrated), Vivian Vance and Tullah Bankhead.

The gentlemen- James Stewart, Cay Grant, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando, and Spencer Tracy.

How about you?

For me, I would have to say James Stewart. Not only did he star in some of my favourite films like Rear Window, It's A Wonderful Life, Shenandoah and Anatomy of a Murder, he was also a gentleman of whom very few had a bad word to say. A great and iconic actor who never suffered with personal demons like many others of the era, he is my favourite actor of all time and someone who's work never seems to age or decrease in quality.

Hayley Mills - of course. She's just pure sunshine. Maureen O'Hara, too. Same reason.

After seeing The Sisters with Bette Davis, I can safely say I am a fan of Errol Flynn. One of the most gorgeous men who ever lived.

I've lately been growing partial to Bogie. The man practically lived, breathed, and died cool, and pulled off a wide range of emotions. Even in his less interesting films, I'm captivated by his performances.

There's a bunch of other good ones mentioned here as well. I love James Mason, Vincent Price, Audrey and Katherine, the Marx Brothers, Hayley Mills, Peter Lorre, Fred MacMurray, Gregory Peck, Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Bette Davis myself. Oh, and Robert Mitchum, William Holden, Greta Garbo, John Wayne, and Kirk Douglas. And of course Charlie and Buster.

Tons of great ones. I could go on all day, too.

Yes! Eleanor Parker is underrated. Mainly I think because instead of wanting to be a "star", she was all about being an actress, creating separate identities for each character she portrayed on screen. I'm paraphrasing, but I believe she once said "If you recognize me on the street, it means I haven't done my job properly".

I love all her movies. :)

I agree! It's a shame she is really only remebered for her role as the Baroness in "The Sound of Music". I mean I love the movie and she is fabulous in it taking what could have been a one dimensonal role and making her a human but she has so many wonderful performances. She should get an honorary Oscar but I really doubt that will happen.

I mean, still a pretty good list. I think I’d add Ingrid Bergman, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, Gene Kelly, Vivien Leigh, Richard Burton. So many, many great actors... how could I try and name all my favorites?

I think when I posted that list, Elizabeth Taylor was still with us (EDIT: I just looked it up, she passed three days after I posted). We still have Dame Olivia de Havilland (at 104!!!) and Leslie Caron, 89, who is still acting in France.
