Trains & Boats (DisneyToon Studios)

Post by Sotiris »

Besides "Planes" and its sequels (it's reported to be a trilogy), Disney is also planning on making "Trains" and "Boats" and potentially even more vehicle-based films if these are successful.
Honor Hunter wrote:There will be more Cars Toons later this year, next year sees the sequel film, "Cars 2" as well as the DisneyToon spinoff "Planes," which is the first of several straight-to-DVD animated features exploring a world occupied by mechanical beings.

The DisneyToon animation studio, which makes direct-to-DVD films, is at work on a "Cars" spinoff, "Planes," due for release in 2013. Mr. Lasseter, who also oversees DisneyToon, said that if "Planes" is successful, he may build additional titles around boats, trains and other vehicles. "It's a bigger idea that can be expanded," he said.

Planes is the first in a series of projects focusing on the different vehicles in the "Cars" world.

Q: Allegedly, Planes is the first of three 'Planes' films. I’ve even read solid rumors that DisneyToon Studios could do Boats.

Bob Hilgenberg & Rob Muir: Yes, we heard that they were developing other films in the franchise, Boats and Trains. But, beyond seeing some visual development, we don’t know what, if any, of the films will be put into production. They may wait to see how well Planes performs.

Q: Do you think Planes can replicate the success of Cars?

Anna Chapman: Yes. It won’t be the size of Cars, but it will add to, and maintain, the success of the Cars franchise. In the future there will be additions to the Cars franchise in different vehicle guises. Watch this space, there’s a lot coming.

Q: Does that mean that we could eventually see a Disney Trains or a Disney Boats?

Klay Hall: Absolutely. It’s endless. There’s no end to where it can go. It always comes back to telling good stories with compelling characters. Honestly, the possibilities are endless. John sees all these things out there as having characters and personalities. He really does.

Q: What are each of you working on next?

Bobs Gannaway: The answer to that question basically is what’s lovely about Disneytoon Studios, as well as Pixar and all Disney Animation Studios. It’s all under the John Lasseter umbrella and we have a group of directors and we all work together. So, each individual studio has a story trust groups of directors that work together. Disneytoon Studios makes series-based films. We’ll make a series of films based in a world. In this case, it’s the world of anthropomorphized vehicles. We’re going to continue to explore other ideas in that world, but we don’t have a mandate for a schedule or a time or a deadline. We wait until we find the right story, and then once we’ve found the right story and we’ve done our research, that’s when we’ll grow the movie out of that. So, that’s where we’re at right now.

Q: What sort of story are you planning on telling next? What type of story do you want tell?

Bobs Gannaway: The vehicle world is a rich world. The aviation world is incredibly rich with the history of aviation, the different types of planes, the different types of pilots. It’s such a rich world, there’s a lot more stories you can tell just in that world and then you also have the different kinds of vehicles out there that we haven’t even touched yet. So there’s a lot of potential and that’s were we are in development right now.

There's no need to. The direct link does the job just as well.

Wouldn't trains just look like a knock-off of Thomas the Tank Engine? And Theodore the Tugboat for Boats?

Edit: Lol at now seeing that video. Segways would be my favourite.

Why would they even consider this, When Cars 2 was the lowest earning pixar movie? It makes no sense!

Yeah, I instantly thought of Thomas as well. Guess the artists will have to figure out how to design the characters to not resemble the residents of Sodor.

This madness must stop. I don't care how much money it makes, it's still a bad idea and it's already been done.

I don't think it'll look like Thomas. Pixar doesn't put eyes in the most common place. (I know this isn't pixar but it'll still be pixar inspired so...) For cars you would expect them to make the headlights the eyes but they use the windshield. To avoid looking like thomas you just don't put an entire face on the...erm face of the train (I'm not sure what its actually called)
They could make that grill thing its teeth/mouth and make the eyes bigger while taking up the entire part where Thomas' face would normally be. That's even if they use the same type of train. There are so many.

I think eventually, like most entertainment enterprises, this whole "cars world" thing will fade in a matter of time. No matter how popular something like this seems, something new will take it's place and that will probably happen before they get as far as Trains and Boats.

Boats would also look like TUGS a show produced by the people who did Thomas the Tank Engine. Most people in the US only saw it as part of Salty's Lighthouse on TLC when ever they were watching the boats in snugboat harbor.

It looks like the Trains movie is going to focus on streamliners.

Wow, that actually looks quite atmospheric and a bit dark. I don't think that's what the final product will look like though , although i hope it retains some of the aesthetics.

Might as well go all the way, I suppose. If kids have fun playing with the merchandise, more power to them. Not like it will detract from any of their other films.

I wouldn't mind if this were more like Dumbo or Tomas the Tank Engine, where the anthropomorphic trains actually live in a world populated by humans.

I mean, in Cars it doesn't make sense that they live in cities filled with houses that they ... cannot even enter, but in a world populated by trains it would make even less sense... I mean... how do they.... do anything really? WHO BUILT THEIR TRACKS? do they just poop them out?

UGH, this whole Cars, planes, trains universe just makes my head hurt.

The concept art is nice though. Gives off a great Metropolis vibe. I would live a bit of a film noir style. I mean, it's not like the parents won't buy it. They might as well make these films... you know. Good.

Yeah, it's always bothered me about how they're able to construct giant stadiums in the Cars universe. How do they draw up the blueprints?

At least, in Cars 2, they show how cars are able to ride in commercial airplanes and trains. But, in Cars 2, they also show double-decker buses during the London scenes. What's the point of a bus in a world where everybody is a car?!?

And to further add to the confusion, the airport sequence shows a stair car. A stair car! There's a reason the Cars films are the only Pixars I can't suspend disbelief for.
