Netflix has greenlighted Shadow and Bone, an eight-episode series based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows Grishaverse fantasy novels, from Eric Heisserer, writer of Netflix’s smash hit feature Bird Box, and Shawn Levy, executive producer of the Internet network’s mega hit series Stranger Things. The project falls under the Netflix overall deal for Levy’s 21 Laps. Bardugo also serves as an executive producer on the show, produced by Netflix. Pouya Shahbazian (the Divergent series) also serves as an executive producer alongside Bardugo as well as Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry for 21 Laps.

Created, written and executive produced by Heisserer, who also will showrun, Shadow and Bone brings together the stories and characters of both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows, two overlapping series that take place in Bardugo’s Grishaverse. In a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, a young soldier uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at war now, and it will take more than magic to survive.

With over 2.5 million copies sold in the English language alone, Bardugo’s Grishaverse books have been translated into 38 languages around the world to date. A new installment of the Grishaverse, King of Scars, comes out later this month.

Netflix has set the cast for its eight-part adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows Grishaverse fantasy novels, from Eric Heisserer, writer of Netflix’s smash hit feature Bird Box. The story focuses on a young soldier who uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. But as she struggles to hone her power, dangerous forces plot against her. Thugs, thieves, assassins and saints are at all at war, and it will take more than magic to survive.

Jessie Mei Li will play the orphan soldier Alina Starkov on the 21 Laps Entertainment-produced series. Westworld and The Punisher actor Ben Barnes will play General Kirigan, the commander of a magical military elite in Bardugo’s fantasy world. Other series regulars include Doctor Who actress Amita Suman and Pennyworth‘s Freddy Carter — who play fellow gang members in a criminal underworld — Archie Renaux (Voyagers, Gold Digger) and Kit Young (Endeavour). The cast also include Sujaya Dasgupta (Press, Guilt), Danielle Galligan (Game of Thrones, Krypton), Daisy Head (Harlots, Guilt) and Simon Sears (Winter Brothers).

Executive producer Bardugo said: “I was so wary going into this process because these characters have lived in my head for so long. Turns out I had nothing to fear. Watching these actors begin to inhabit these roles has been pure magic.”

I've read Six of Crows and it wasn't for me (YA isn't in general), but I'm still somewhat interested in this. If only for Ben Barnes.

Are you referring to the comic that used to be featured at the back of the Disney magazine in the '90s / early '00s? (I can't remember what it was called, Disney Adventure magazine?)

Oh, really? I didn't know that. I actually bought a book that compiled those comics a decade or so ago. It was intended as a gift for someone else, but then they didn't want it. :/ So I still have it. At least I finally got to read all of the story that way. I thought it was pretty good myself.

EDIT: I looked on its Wikipedia page, and apparently Netflix announced in 2019 that they were going to produce a series. Maybe that was what you were thinking of. Apparently it was going to be an film trilogy made by Warner Animation before transitioning into a planned Netflix TV series.

My husband and I just finished watching this series last night. It was really good! I liked it but didn't love it for the first few episodes, but the last three or four episodes were really good. Some things were a little confusing for me, but not too many. I recommend it if you like YA or Game of Thrones type stuff. I liked this better than GOT, minus Denaerys and her dragons!
