Gretel & Hansel

Post by Sotiris »

Rising genre filmmaker Oz Perkins has signed on to direct Gretel and Hansel for Orion Pictures and Automatik Entertainment, Collider has exclusively learned. Rob Hayes (Netflix’s Chewing Gum) wrote the script, which sources describe as a faithful version of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale about a pair of siblings kidnapped by a terrifying witch who lives in the surrounding woods. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Sinister) and Fred Berger (La La Land) will produce for Automatik, and production is expected to start this fall in Europe.

If Disney's not making it, I'm glad that someone is! Definitely interested in this.

Casting news.
Sophia Lillis, the breakout from the 2017 hit Stephen King adaptation It, will star in Gretel and Hansel, a reimagining of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale from Orion Pictures.

Osgood Perkins, who wrote and directed the haunted-house horror pics The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, is helming the spooky thriller, which he wrote with Rob Hayes.

The story is described as being set a long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside and focuses on a young girl who leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.

Orion is prepping a fall shoot in Ireland. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Sinister, Upgrade) and Fred Berger (La La Land, Autopsy of Jane Doe), partners at Automatik Entertainment, will produce. Sandra Yee Ling will executive produce. Dan Kagan will oversee the project on behalf of Orion.

Lillis is really going places. What a shame she couldn’t have played Ariel.

I'm still holding out hope that we could see her as Ariel, but with the current trend of Disney's live-action films, I'm not sure it would make a difference in the long run.

Am excited for this film since it'll be a traditional take on the story.

The commercials for this look very good. It almost has the same vibe as a Shyamalan movie.

This was SOOOO goood. Definitely one of those films I'd like to own. You can sort of feel the fear of female empowerment showing itself in a great deal of the horror films coming out the past decade, like the obvious mood of the public / audience is being channeled into the content in a way. The witch gaining her power and abundance from eating her own children feels like a transparent abortion metaphor (also touches into a lot of QAnon stuff of elite female figures eating fetuses. ).

The images here and the score (especially during the prologue) were amazing. Sophia Lillis is just so fantastic*, but so was Alice Krige. I thought it was all incredibly well-done, especially the very ending with Gretel's hands turning black. Perhaps implying that she was haunted by memories of the Witch the way the Witch herself had been haunted by memories of her daughter, eventually becoming just like her. Or simply saying that even when you try simply to use power as a means for good, power still ultimately corrupts regardless of how you use it.

* I think I'm going to forever have "What could've been" feelings about her towards the TLM remake. To think they had a legitimately great actress who fit square in the age range for Ariel and who also had blue eyes / auburn hair right there, and didn't take advantage of it. Her as Ariel, Bette Midler as Ursula, Billy Porter as Sebastian, etc. It would've been perfect. :(

Yes, I thought this movie was very good, too. People wanted it to be scarier but I thought the creepy scariness was perfect. Interesting female empowerment fear and abortion metaphors you found. Never thought of those. I usually don't pick up on metaphors though. Also, I don't think the abortion metaphor is there, as the film would be anti-abortion but pro-female empowerment, wouldn't it? And omg YES to your Little Mermaid live-action casting ideas!
