Alita: Battle Angel

I thought I'd start a new topic about James Cameron's upcoming Battle Angel Alita film, because I think the project is worthy of a forum discussion. Consider this:

1. James Cameron is a talented director, having recently stunned the world again with Avatar. As I'm sure you know already know, he also directed Terminator, Titanic, The Abyss, and Disney's Ghosts of the Abyss.

2. Battle Angel Alita is regarded as one of the best Japanese mangas ever (and a so-so anime show)! For those who have read the series, it is genuine movie material. The character development is very believable. The action is sleek, swift, and incredibly paced. The story is emotional and deep.

3. For six years now, James Cameron has been playing this stressful game with movie fans. He's been promising a Battle Angel adaption since 2004, but every year, he keeps delaying it. "Technology isn't good enough," "Not a good enough script," "Avatar will be filmed first, " etc... etc... His latest excuse? "Avatar 2!!!"

News about this film often creeps up into online conversations, especially when James Cameron gives the press tantalizing glimpses of his future plans (see #3 above).

So for those who are interested in cyborg Alita, please post here!

So, I found it interesting that there has been an increasing amount of talk for this film; not since 2006 (when "Alita" was supposed to preceed "Avatar") has there been this amount of positive news.

Jon Landau (the producer) spoke to MTV and revealed that:

"Battle Angel" may happen after "Avatar 2." (Shucks, but oh well.)

He's trying to get Cameron to change the title to "Alita," to fit Cameron's tradition of only naming his films with an "A" (Avatar, Abyss, etc..) or a "T" (Titanic, Terminator, etc..)

Landau also said that the film will concentrate on Alita's earlier life (manga volumes 1-3).

Motorball will also be featured prominantly. I am most excited about this bit. If you don't know what motorball is, or how it is intricately structured within the story of "Battle Angel Alita," google it and be amazed.

There is still no release date, but I've always liked James Cameron's directing style, even his two documentaries for Disney, 'Ghosts of the Abyss" and "Aliens of the Deep."

We saw this last night and it was amazing!!! We don't go to the movies as often anymore to save $ but we've been looking forward to this since the first trailer. Such a great story with characters you care about, and of course the visuals were superb. I need a sequel! (I'm not a sequel-crazy person but I want more of this world, more of Alita herself).

The director talks about a potential continuation.
With fans of Alita: Battle Angel still baying for a sequel of some kind, and with experience of working with Netflix on We Could Be Heroes and Disney+ on The Mandalorian, could streaming be the savior of that potential franchise as a movie or series?

“I think anything is possible. Disney bought Fox, and they have Disney+, so that is worth the conversation. I know other people would love to see another, and I would love to do another one. As far as where it would go or how it would be made, I think streaming has opened up many opportunities such as sequels. It’s already a pre-sold concept, it’s already got a built-in audience that wants to see it, and then it’s delivered to them in a way that’s the easiest for them to consume. So, it’s not a bad idea.”

A much-speculated Alita sequel also is still possible. “Jim and I talked about it recently, and we’re still very interested,” he says. “I told him, ‘Let me deliver Boba and then let’s figure out a pitch.'”
