High Fidelity (2020)

Post by Sotiris »

Another show for Disney's streaming service.
A romantic comedy TV series inspired by Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel High Fidelity and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack is in early development for Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer service. The project, a gender-swapped take on the classic title, comes from writers Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka (Bull, Ugly Betty), the Midnight Radio producing team and ABC Signature Studios (SMILF), the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios. Midnight Radio is comprises Scott Rosenberg — who co-wrote the High Fidelity feature — Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec.

Written by West and Kucserka, the High Fidelity TV series is described as a departure from the book and the movie while still capturing the romantic comedy and authentic spirit of the original source materials. It centers on a record store owner — a female take on the character played in the movie by Cusack — talking straight to the camera as she chronicles past relationships.

While the Touchstone Pictures movie was rated R, the TV series — an optimistic-in-tone mixtape/diary rom-com — will be PG-13 and intended for family co-viewing, consistent with Disney’s plans for a family-friendly OTT service that is not expected not feature R-rated movies or series.

This is the kind of show Disney will need to attract attention for their streaming service more than anything else, imo--depending on how well they turn out. I haven't read the book or watched the original movie, but the show's writers make me optimistic this would be worth seeing. I loved Ugly Betty and had planned to check out Bull last Fall because the adverts looked pretty good (before I found out Dr. Phil was involved and I ran the other way). Not sure if I'm rooting for it to succeed exactly, considering I'm not putting out for their streaming service--for now, anyway. Who knows how things will look differently a few years from now.

John Cusack is not very happy about the news.
Cusack made headlines in April for his opinion on Disney’s plan to reboot “High Fidelity” into a family-friendly TV series with a female lead character replacing Rob Gordon. He responded on Twitter saying that “they’ll f— it up,” obviously still very protective over the dynamic of the movie that made it into a fan favorite.

To do it right, “Hornby would have to be involved, since he wrote the book. I really hope they would keep Hornby’s vision; it’s really about sourcing the original material. And I do like the idea of a different gender,” he says, cautioning, “But if they’re just trying to rebrand something that was done well and turn it into something else — well, that would be like turning Wicker Park into one big chain store.”

Production is set to begin on Disney’s romantic comedy series High Fidelity mid September. Mad Max and Divergent actress Zoë Kravitz has been offered a lead role. An interesting choice since her mother, Lisa Bonet also starred in the original film.

I like Zoë Kravitz a lot so that piques my interest a little.

It's official!
After lengthy negotiations, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) has been tapped to star and executive produce High Fidelity, the reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack with a female point of view, which had been in development at Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service. Kravitz will play the ultimate music fan, a record store owner who’s obsessed with pop culture and Top Five lists, a female take on the character played in the movie by Cusack.

With Kravitz on board, the project has received a formal 10-episode order. The High Fidelity reboot hails from writers Veronica West & Sarah Kucserka (Bull, Ugly Betty), the Midnight Radio producing team and ABC Signature Studios (SMILF), the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios. Midnight Radio is comprised of Scott Rosenberg — who co-wrote the High Fidelity feature — Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. West and Kucserka co-wrote the script and will executive produce alongside Midnight Radio’s Appelbaum, Nemec, Pinkner, Rosenberg and Kravitz.

Jake Lacy (I’m Dying Up Here) is set as a series regular opposite Zoë Kravitz in High Fidelity, a reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack, with a female point of view.

In the High Fidelity series, Kravitz stars as the ultimate music fan, a record store owner who’s obsessed with pop culture and Top Five lists. Lacy will play Clyde, who is effortlessly cute, if not the coolest guy in the room. A recent NY transplant from LA, he’s still trying to figure out how to navigate the city. Despite his lack of interest in music, he reveals a funny and open side that intrigues Rob (Kravitz). But he might prove to be just like all the other guys… or so it seems.
