Tarzan: The Broadway Musical Cast Album - Press Release

Post by Luke »

For Immediate Release

WALT DISNEY RECORDS TO RELEASE THE CAST ALBUM FROM TARZAN

Features music and lyrics by Oscar® and six-time GRAMMY® Award winner PHIL COLLINS

"Gorgeous and imaginative. It's the flying apes and title character that people have come to see, and the show doesn't disappoint. Phil Collins' music includes some terrific songs." -- Frank Scheck, The Hollywood
Reporter

"Sensational! The most visually enthralling show since 'The Lion King!'" -- Richard Zoglin, Time Magazine

The cast album for TARZAN®, the new musical presented by Disney Theatrical Productions, which opened on Broadway on May 10th, 2006, was released by Walt Disney Records on June 27. Oscar® and six-time GRAMMY® Award winner Phil Collins has written the music and lyrics, expanding his songs for Disney's film into the complete theatre score. The album also features a special treat - Collins performs "Everything That I Am," one of the nine new songs he penned for the musical.

More than 90 years ago, Edgar Rice Burroughs introduced TARZAN® to the world in the October 1912 issue of "All Story Magazine." The character was an instant sensation. Since then, he has been featured in 26 authorized novels and more than 44 motion pictures, including Disney's 1999 film.

Phil Collins composed five songs for the 1999 film, "Disney's TARZAN®," including "Two Worlds, One Family," "Strangers Like Me," and "You'll Be In My Heart," which won the 2000 Academy Award® for Song of the Year, spent 10 weeks as #1 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart, and was #1 in 14 countries. The soundtrack went double platinum, while the film went on to instant international success, grossing $447 million worldwide, with subsequent DVD sales in excess of 13 million units.

Collins, who makes his Broadway songwriting debut with TARZAN®, has written music and lyrics for nine new songs for the Broadway production, in addition to his film score.

Although he has directed in his native Ireland, Bob Crowley makes his Broadway directorial debut with TARZAN®. Crowley, whose recent work includes his Tony Award®-winning scenery for Aida and his acclaimed design on Mary Poppins in London, has been praised for creating expressionistic, poetic environments for his productions, and brings that depth of artistry to the world of TARZAN®. Tony Award®-winner David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly), has written the book, adapted from the screenplay by Tab Murphy, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White and based on the novel, Tarzan of the Apes, by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Josh Strickland makes his Broadway debut as Tarzan. The production also stars Jenn Gambatese (All Shook Up , Hairspray ) as Jane, Merle Dandridge (Rent, Jesus Christ Superstar, Aida) as Kala, Shuler Hensley (Tony®, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Olivier Award winner for his performance as Jud Fry in Oklahoma!) as Kerchak, Chester Gregory II (Hairspray, The Jackie Wilson Story) as Terk, Timothy Jerome (Disney's Beauty and the Beast , Tony® and Drama Desk nominated for Me and My Girl) as Professor Porter and Donnie Keshawarz (Taboo, TVs "Lost," "24" and "The Sopranos") as Clayton. Daniel Manche and Alex Rutherford will alternate in the role of Young Tarzan.

TARZAN® currently is in production at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (226 West 46th Street) in New York City. For ticket information, please contact Ticketmaster at 212-307-4747 or www.ticketmaster.com or visit www.tarzanonbroadway.com. The Walt Disney Records cast album is now in stores for a suggested retail price of $18.98.

I got this after someone else posted looking for it. I listened to the whole show 1 1/2 times and it's not that bad. My only complaint was that sometimes I thought a girl was singing when it was Tarzan (sorry Josh Strickland and kid Tarzans). The original songs were done well and I liked some of the added lyrics for Jane. At first it seemed a little unfitting, but I got used to it. Terk's song is fun, but forgettable. That's some of the problem with the new songs. The lyrics and some melodies weren't as strong as the original songs. Also, Collins chose to throw in different styles of music like full-on Broadway showtunes. I guess he wanted to add in more styles since "Trashin' the Camp" was so different than the other songs in the movie soundtrack. Also, I thought Jane's first song was hilarious even though it wasn't meant to be...hehehe oops...she sings about all the different plants she sees with their scientific names. There might be a few animals or birds too, I have to look at the lyrics again. The CD booklet includes pictures of the characters in costume. They're simple and sort of artsy like Lion King was, which was better than seeing the actors in gorrilla costumes.

Also, if you're midly interested, I found the best deal was at Target for $11.89. It wasn't a sale, but a Temporary Price Cut, so I'm pretty sure it'll be that price this week too.

haven't bought the cd yet- but u can listen to clips on the official website for the show.

Some of the new added songs sound fun & beautiful & familiar as some of the songs are taken from the musical score

'Who Better Then Me' sounds like a fun new addition to the soundtrack.

Thank goodness there is a love song for Tarzan & Jane in the show w/ "For the First Time"

And also a love song (I think??) for Kerchak & Kala w/ "Sure as the Sun Turns to Moon"

And Phils additional Song "Everything That I Am" I hope it hits the airwaves.

Anywho- just the samples of songs are hype enough for me to want to go out & purchase the soundtrack & I will..

And it looks like...no songs for Clayton-kinda hoping for a nice villian song- but that's ok.
And also- is there no Tantor in the stage show- didn't see his character in the cast for the show.

I do hope to see this show at some point but I heard they pulled a Lion King and changed Terk's sex to male. :? Why did they do this? Anyway if it’s even near how amazing B&TB and TLK were this should be nothing short of spectacular. I am sad thou that other than the CD still being out Disney seems to pretend that "On The Record" never happened (which I sadly never saw) but the On Ice shows and the licensing of High School Musical to schools have been a big to-do on there site.

They may have had difficulties finding a suitable actress. I believe Rafiki's sex-change was due to some casting difficulties. Or, they may have decided to be more loyal to the book, where I think Terk is a male. These kind of changes don't really bother me at all - it is a different medium and changes to the story and especially to the visual look are necessary.

On the Record was a tour to begin with and it was not well-recieved, so there was no sense in bringing it to Broadway or London. From what I heard, it was basically just a concert of memorable Disney songs with a really thin wraparound story, such as the package features of the '40s. Not too exciting.

Poor Tarzan did so unfavorably with so many of the broadway critics. For Tony nominations, all the production received was "Best Lighting Design of a Musical" -- even Lestat garnered better accolades.

I'm almost scared to see it now but my whole family got tickets for it this Sunday so I went ahead and bought the CD and unless they really blew it with dialogue or something it shouldn't be too bad. But yes I agree poor Josh Strickland does kinda sound like a low woman sometimes :) . Particularly during Two Worlds I swore until I read the songlist that it was the woman playing Tarzan's mom or Kala.

Yesterday there was a presentation for Tarzan in Aalsmeer, Holland. That's because on April 15 Tarzan will have it's (foreign) premiere in Holland. In an Dutch article I've read that the theater where Tarzan will play, is bigger than the theater on Broadway so they can update it a little bit, because there are more possibilities in the Fortis Circustheater in Scheveningen. For the presentation Thomas Schumacher and cast members Josh Strikland (Tarzan), Jen Gambatese (Jane) and Chester Gregory (Terk) came to Holland. They sang four songs for the press: ‘Who Better Than Me’, ‘You’ll be in my Heart’, ‘For The First Time’, en ‘Son of Man’.

It looks like the Fortis Circustheater is the place for Disney musicals. After Aida and The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast is playing there now for a couple of months after a national tour. I'm really looking forward to Tarzan. I saw Beauty and the Beast in the national tour and The Lion King in Scheveningen. I loved both and bought the CD/DVD cast albums from both shows.

I hope Mary Poppins will fly to Holland after Tarzan.

On http://www.musicalworld.nl/artikel.more ... 65_0_8_0_C there are some photos (click on it for bigger picture).

On friday there was a Dutch TV show called "Who is going to be Tarzan". There were five candidates. Ron Link won the role. He is Tarzan in the Dutch version of Tarzan. The premiere is in april next year. Holland is the first country that has this musical after Broadway. This is a picture of Ron Link:

Funny detail: Ron was like Josh Strickland a finalist in the Dutch version of American Idol.

Sunday April 15 is the European premiere of Tarzan in the Netherlands. This site has some photo's of this Dutch version of Tarzan:

http://www.telegraaf.nl/prive/article61 ... ce?cid=rss (click on the photo's for a larger version)

Like Belle, Jane is blonde (same actress). I can't wait to see it (there is a chance I can be at the premiere night!).

I've read in the paper today that they updated the Broadway version. It's likely that this Dutch version will be the blueprint for all future Tarzan productions in stead of the Broadway version.

Yesterday I was in Scheveningen (near The Hague) at the red carpet of the European Opening of Tarzan. I saw Phil Collins there which was great. I heared him in a interview say that this Dutch spoken version of the musical is better than the Broadway version. There is even more music written for it!
