Atlantica wrote:I've been revisiting the original's score & songs in anticipation for the sequel ( probably not the wisest choice, I can see that ! ) And I absolutely cannot see how 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' won the Oscar for Best Song out of the ENTIRE songbook of the film. Does anyone know if people were shocked at the time ? Maybe not shocked, that isn't the right word, but certainly isn't the most memorable or most quotable at all. My money would have been on 'A Spoonful of Sugar' or 'Lets Go Fly A Kite' ? Julie Andrews barely sings in 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' as well, which is ironic it was the song that won.

I may be of the minority, but just wanted to share my two cents.
I've always wondered too why that's the song from the film that won. I think "Chim Chim Cher-ee" is a good song, but I agree that it isn't the most memorable or the most famous one. Well, people's tastes in music change over time, so maybe that song was the one that appealed to voters the most back then. Or maybe the company submitted it because they thought it was the one with a better chance of winning. I don't know how things worked then, if it was the studios that submitted the songs like now or not. But many times the songs that are nominated or win at the Oscars aren't the best or the more popular ones from their films. At least in my opinion. Other example to me is The Lion King. I think there were other songs in the film that we better than "Can You Feel the Love Tonight".

That could be the case with this sequel as well. Probably there are other songs in the film that are better than the ones Disney submitted. I can see why they've selected these ones, though. "The Place Where Lost Things Go" is probably the most emotional one, and "Trip a Little Light Fantastic" must be the biggest dance number.

"A Spoonful of Sugar" was one of the ten finalists for the original song category in 1964, but the voters opted for "Chim Chim Cher-ee" for the final nomination. So they did consider the other songs as well.

How fascinating estefan, at least it was up for the running I suppose. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who things it was an odd choice to win!

That's really interesting; I had never heard they selected finalists in the category during those years. Thanks for the info, estefan! I'm glad Academy members also liked "A Spoonful of Sugar". And also to see several other Sherman brothers' songs there and other Disney songs like "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat".

Even by judging the trailer/promo footage, some of these shots are just gorgeously framed that I hope that Dion Beebe gets a nomination for Best Cinematography at the Oscars next year.

The movie's projected to open at $70 million.
Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the 1964 musical film that won five Oscars including Best Actress for Julie Andrews, is launching on Wednesday, December 19 to get ahead of Aquaman, which opens that Friday, and industry estimates believe the Disney-branded pic could deliver a first week in the $70 million range (Christmas falls on the following Tuesday after the Rob Marshall movie opens). Total awareness and unaided awareness (the poll category where respondents bring up a film’s title without being prodded, and off which studios make their ad-spend decisions) is best with women under/over 25 at this point in time.

I can totally see Disney blaming the 2D sequence if the movie's box office gross doesn't meet their expectations.

I'm glad they chose that song over the two Disney's submitting for the Oscars because that's the most memorable one we've heard so far. Even though we've heard just a snippet of it, it's stuck in my head moreso than the ones I've listen to multiple times in full.

Nice! The review saying that while it's not exactly equal with the first, it's still a beautifully made, sung, designed film that can stand shoulder to shoulder with it is a very notice indeed.

So glad of the wonderful early reviews ! I can't remember when I was last so excited for a Disney Live Action film.

What the original has above all else is time; it has had time to gestate and become one of THE quintessential Disney films. Or even just quintessential film, period. Give this one a few years, then it will hopefully become the classic the original is. The songs will be played and played over and over, and loved thoroughly by people the world over. THEN it will be a classic.

I wonder if it will be embraced in the Disney parks ? Or not ever used in favour of the original ?
