Okay, first of all, the trailer was amazing. I loved everything about it. The visuals, the costumes...
Second, I'm now convinced that Emily Blunt will be amazing in this.
I loved Dick Van Dyke's cameo appearance. And I love the traditional animation segments. I'm super excited

The trailer was spellbinding! I've never been a big Poppins fan so I didn't think I'd love this as much as I did. So hyped to see this film now especially with all the great actors involved. The visuals are superb and of course every shot of 2D animation was a godsend.
So many of the comments are about seeing hand-drawn animation again so I hope if the segments are popular enough, it'll send a message to Disney that 2D animation is not dead. If there is a market to cater to nostalgic fans of Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, etc. then certainly there is a market to cater to the nostalgic fans of 2D animation since that is what Disney is best known for, besides theme parks.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Gosh, that was darn worth the wait. It took me all I could to not scream at work when Angela Lansbury and of course Dick von Dyke came out. The animated scene does look fake so far, as in the green screen is obvious and the colors are too bright (like Lin and Emily’s clothes), but the animation is so gorgeous & alive that I don’t really care. And god, it is so so welcomed!
The whole cast looks and sounds great. Emily is the perfect successor to Julie Andrews, but there is a huge amount of emptiness with Julie Andrews not being Mary. I know it’s not fair to compare Emily to Julie, the character just feels off without her
I’m looking forward to the songs (AHHHHHH ANGELA IS GETTING A SOLO), but I’m frustrated they’re basically ripoffs of the original songs. I hope the movie isn’t too by the numbers.

Loved the magical trailer, loved Emily Blunt's version of Mary, and love the poster that actually shows a lot of stuff but looks good at the same time and is a homage to '60's musical posters!
What was not at least the same brightness in the original "Jolly Holiday" scene?!disneyprincess11 wrote:The animated scene does look fake so far, as in the green screen is obvious and the colors are too bright (like Lin and Emily’s clothes), but the animation is so gorgeous & alive that I don’t really care. No, it’s more neon than the original. I suffer from optic neuritis, which mean my eyes can get strained easily and my eyes can get blurry over it. I literally almost lost my sight over it a few years ago. It was scary. So, the colors hurt my eyes a bit because it’s so neon and bright. I may do a Photoshop to show you what I mean.Disney Duster wrote:What was not at least the same brightness in the original "Jolly Holiday" scene?!disneyprincess11 wrote:The animated scene does look fake so far, as in the green screen is obvious and the colors are too bright (like Lin and Emily’s clothes), but the animation is so gorgeous & alive that I don’t really care. After heading to London 4 times for the live-action shoot and building a crew of over 100 amazingly talented folks to collaborate with (mostly in Pasadena), the result is spectacular. It was a pleasure to work with director Rob Marshall (Chicago) and sequence director Jim Capobianco. It was not an easy project to do, so thanks again to the full crew who worked so incredibly hard on this film. Your effort is greatly appreciated.

The second image was during director's Rob Marshall's visit to Duncan Studio (Rob is in the middle, with the blue shirt). There are about 60 crew members in this photo, but many other people would join the production afterwards. Ultimately a total crew of over 100 was part of the animation production.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
I'm glad Angela Lansbury has her own number. I doubt I'll buy the whole soundtrack--unless it's better than it sounds like from that article--just her song. Although Meryl Streep's character and the song "Turning Turtle" sounds interesting. I'm glad Jane is a feminist; nice follow-through from "Sister Suffragette."
Listening to most often lately:
Ariana Grande ~ "we can't be friends (wait for your love)"
Ariana Grande ~ "imperfect for you"
Kacey Musgraves ~ "The Architect"
Re: Mary Poppins Returns
My only concern is that it seems to have followed the same trope as a lot of sequels ... the exact same story, but with the child / someone else in place of the original adult ?
Hopefully that's just a broad outline, and the intricacies of the story go much deeper rather than being the same film, but with Michael Banks in the place of his father.

Ugh! I am so conflicted about this; part of me wants to like it but another part is like “why?” And I am starting to get sick of the remakes. ....there are just too many imho. However, the production values are amazing on this film!

Oh man, I'm sorry! That's sad. I wish that didn't happen to you. But I personally I loved the colors. I guess they went too bright if they hurt your eyes, but I loved the colors otherwise. If only they could fix it for you. If you wanna do a comparison, I would really like to see, because I remember "Jolly Holiday" being so bright as well! Please, show me.disneyprincess11 wrote:No, it’s more neon than the original. I suffer from optic neuritis, which mean my eyes can get strained easily and my eyes can get blurry over it. I also really liked Lin as Burt. I actually forgot that was him!
I think me not having big fan nostalgia for Mary Poppins makes me accept Emily and Lin more?

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
This is me too. I've never loved the movie the way the general public does. Which is actually true for pretty much all of Disney's 60s films for me.Disney Duster wrote: I think me not having big fan nostalgia for Mary Poppins makes me accept Emily and Lin more?
There are few people who could top Julie Andrews, but I do trust Emily Blunt with the role. Still wary of Lin's rap but we'll see how it goes in the film.

Thankfully, this is not a remake. It's funny you called it that when Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted this yesterday: 'I think I need one of you to make me a gif of Janet from The Good Place saying "Not a remake," it's a long Poppins press road ahead...'justcuttinhair wrote:Ugh! Disney making a direct sequel is a nice change of pace as this will exist in the same continuity as the previous film. And Mary Poppins is the sort of character you can get away with changing her appearance, as she is a magical being and all.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Wouldn’t it be great if Julie Andrews would actually appear in the movie, and Disney just keeps it as a surprise?

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
That's secretly my hope as well. It doesn't feel fair that Julie Andrews wouldn't even have some sort of cameo appearance. I'm hoping Disney has just been keeping it under wraps.

I think i'm the only person in the world who doesn't find Miranda as amazing as everyone constantly does. The fact that Disney seems enamored with him and placing him in every project and him inserting his shitty rap everywhere even where it doesn't fit (freaking Mary Poppins?) is not appealing at all.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns
Do not get your hopes up for Julie Andrews to appear in this movie.
It was her decision not to appear, and I think she made the right choice. Julie Andrews is Mary Poppins and while I’m willing to give Emily Blunt a chance, I don’t want to see Julie Andrews in a Mary Poppins sequel where she isn’t the title character.
It’s much more likely that she would reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in a hypothetical Princess Diaries III, assuming it every gets off the ground. I hope it does.
At least we have The Cat That Looked At a King.

You're certainly not the only one. In fact, this is the more popular consensus on this forum. I haven't seen Hamilton but I've listened to some of the songs and they don't do anything for me. The songs from Moana are fine but I didn't find them exceptional either. It's middle-tier when it comes to Disney soundtracks for me.thedisneyspirit wrote:I think i'm the only person in the world who doesn't find Miranda as amazing as everyone constantly does. I dunno, aside from his music just overall leaving me underwhelmed most stuff I've read about this guy just turns me off. I can just smell the ego and smugness running off this guy and I hate how american/european liberals and other idiots on the internet want him to be the Latino icon that represents Latinamerica as a whole, while ignoring other more deserving latinos, is just insulting.JeanGreyForever wrote:You're certainly not the only one.
