I always liked the movie. Things I liked:

art was gorgeous

some decent humor

no singing number (would have been out of place here, like hunchback and hercules)

and for me the characters were likable.

I saw this in the theater so I knew I would be buying it on DVD. I was very impressed with the quality of the transfer and the bonus materials. This dVD was also the first one I watched on my new HDTV set in 2002.

I just got this DVD because I want to own all of the animated classics, and the Collector's Editions have been awesome thus far.

This movie came out in 2001, so my last theatrical Disney experience must have been Fantasia 2000. That is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I think my expectations were too high when I first saw it. I couldn't get past the blocky nature of the characters or Milo's awkwardness.

The passage of time and a greater knowledge of animated films has really made me appreciate this movie more. The art and effects are nothing short of jaw-dropping. The music is beautiful, and I enjoyed the characters a lot more this time, especially Mrs. Packard.

I cannot wait to watch the bonus features later in the week.

i think atlantis wasnt 'that' bad. i felt like i wanted it to be more difficult to get there, and when we were in atlantis i wanted to know more about the city and its history:S

but i guess this is a movie that will go down in history as 'potentially' a great movie:S

I'm sure that Don, Kirk, and Gary will mention this somewhere on the DVD, but it seems to me that they had to find the city in the first third of the movie in order to learn more about the Atlanteans' struggles in the second third and rescue them in the final third.

If they had done it as a mystery, it would have made the most sense to put the finding of the city in the final 10 minutes, but this is an action-adventure movie. It's similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark in a way. The heroes find the object of the search relatively quickly and spend the rest of the movie dealing with the consequences of those actions.

oh yeah and the fact that it completely destroyed the Disney formula...more like killed it and beat it some more with a bat
Well, its odd you complain about it being unoriginal at the top, and at the bottom you complain that it "destroyed" the Disney formula. You can't have it both ways :)

As for "why didn't they just do it live action?" they obviously decided on that animation and the design were the style they wanted. Also, this was slightly before CGI eye-fests like Attack of the Clones and the Lord of the Rings films, doing something of such a scale with CGI would have been more expensive then than doing it now. Anyhow, given the progression of CGI these days, you can ask the same question about any film at all now.

I got this movie in the DMC club and i just watched it for the first time this weekend. After reading most of the bad reviews on this forum, I wasn't expecting much but I actually loved this movie. I didn't expect an action film and I watched with two 11 year olds and they also loved it. I don't understand all the bad reviews and why so many of you were disappointed. To me it was a very enjoyable film and kept me interested throughout the entire movie. :)

This is the only Disney traditionally animated feature I really don't like very much. I do own the Collector's edition, but that's because it's a Disney animated feature, so it has its good points with me. In general though, it feels like watching your friend play a video game. The Princess is as unattractive as one could imagine, and I only liked 2 or 3 of the characters. Plus, the way they were giving their backstories one after the other in that one scene, it was just so rushed and very video game like.

And, since some folks compared it to Treasure Planet, I have to say that I absolutely loved Treasure Planet. It had a great, solid story (sure, not exactly a new story) and told it beautifully.

Atlantis the Lost Empire hmm lets see.

Well I remember it was released in theaters June 15th 2001, and that was the day Lara Croft Tomb Raider was being released. Me of course being the big Tomb Raider fan chose to see the movie.

It's kind of a sad thought now that I look back and Im kind of bummed I didnt see Atlantis in the theater because that was the first time since Beauty and the Beast That I didnt see a Disney movie in the theater. But back then I was like 12 years old and I had lost my interest in Disney Animated features for a while. Of course I was happy to have seen Tomb Raider with all my buddies but I would have liked to see Atlantis aswell.

I didnt regain my love for Disney Animated features until my 17th Birthday and I watched Aladdin: PE and Alice in Wonderland: ME for the first time in a long time.

Anyways back on topic lol, I like Atlantis for a lot of reasons too. It was very actiony(thats not a word I know) and the story was pretty good and oh my goodness it wasnt a musical! That really shocked me when I first watched it on the Disney Channel. The only thing I don't really like about it is that some of the characters are under developed and you don't really get to know them. That's not really a bad thing since there is a big cast in that film.

Anyway Atlantis is a good one. I don't rank it with my all time favorite Disney Classic's, nonetheless it is very enjoyable to watch.

Here is my take on Atlantis. It’s a noble attempt at an experiment that failed because of executive tampering. Here is why.

The biggest factor is the set in stone rule that all animated features must end under 90 minutes. If you look at Atlantis, it ends at 90 minutes. This film NEEDED to be 2 hours+. On the 2 disc DVD the film makers talk about all of these ensemble cast films that inspired them to make Atlantis and what all of those films have in common is that they are 2 hours +. You need that much time to get to know all of the characters and to care about them. What we got was a briskly paced film where you barely have time to breathe and get to know anyone. It’s like Here’s Kida, Here’s Milo, Here’s Whitmore, now here’s all these other guys, now we’re at Atlantis. It needed some time to breathe.

Now, what I would have done with Atlantis is we can start the film as is but then I’d include a sequence about the Shepherd’s Journal. I’d have put the Viking sequence after the main title to establish what it is and follow the book through history. You needed something like this to set the tone of the film and to get what the book is. That’s another problem with the film. There is so much background information that was done that we never see on film but are supposed to get. I mean honestly, how many people got that the king was blinded by the crystal in the opening? I know I sure didn’t. You needed him to actually say it. You know, maybe he tells Kida something like “Ever since the day I was blinded” Or he could have told Milo when he told him about the crystal taking his wife “It took my wife and blinded me” Maybe it was even a judgment on him for using its power for evil. The point is you NEED stuff like this in the film.

Secondly, the journey needed to be longer. I’m not sure if I’d have included all the scenes on the Dvd with the Squid Bats and the Lava Whales, but what you needed to do is have several obstacles and in each one a member or two got them out of it with their expertise. That’s how we would have gotten to know the characters more in depth.

Thirdly, once they get to Atlantis the film goes from being a Jules Verne type story to a very 90’s, New Age, environmentalist propaganda film. The mystery and fun from the first half is gone and you get preached to. Pick one or the other. Don’t lead up on with this sci-fi Jules Verne style story then get preachy about crystals and new age stuff. It just feels like two films were spliced together because the contrast is too great. You could have included some of this stuff but toned it back. Again, this goes back to Thomas Schumacher wanting to change the beliefs of children through Disney animation.

Personally, I’d like to see the 3 and a half hour storyboarded version just to see how it plays. Fat chance of that I guess.

I love this movie on the whole, and think it's very enjoyable. The one thing that bugged me was that whole crystal-bonding thing. I never really understood what was actually going on. I know it was explained, but not in terms that make it easy to follow as a key storyline feature. I have understood more after watching the movie recently.

Also, I have to agree about the whole character development thing - There are too many supporting characters, and when you're trying to give them all an equal amount of screen time, you just don't get to know enough about them to really care. I loved the old woman though - the submarine was under attack and she was just chatting away on the phone to her friends  .

Apart from those points - I think the movie was great! Yeah it could have used a little improvement here and there, but there aren't many movies that couldn't! I have the 2-disc edition and love it!

First time I watched it: I hated it. I thought it was too cliché (especially the good-turn-bad-turn-good-crew), I loathed the character design and didn't enjoy it on the whole.
Second time I watched it: Still hated it.
Third time I watched it: Wouldn't quite say I loved it, but I really enjoyed it. I appreciated the designs, found the deeper layers in the story and it felt as a nice little adventure movie.
I should watch it again soon, maybe I'll love it this time ;)

I just joined the DMC.
I received, among other titles, Atlantis: Collector's Edition and Mulan.
I watched these two movies yesterday, for the very first time.

I would have to say Atlantis was the far superior movie in comparison.

It just might be me though.
I hate when characters sing in movies.

I only like it in South Park the Movie.

But Atlantis was great.
Great characters, great pace, fantastic animation.

I also received 2 other movies that I have never seen before.
Brother Bear
Treasure Planet

I not knocking Mulan. It was really good, but I rolled my eyes when they started singing.

My favorite Disney films are the ones where the characters do not sing.

That's just me.

Back before Atlantis came out, I was really, really looking forward to seeing it, but this was when I was...16? And my parents rarely took me to the theater, and I didn't drive yet, and my aunt & uncle sometimes took me, and my friend weren't interested in Disney for the most part. So, I bought the VHS when it came out. And I was pleased. Although I don't usually list it in my favorite Disney films list, it's up there- it's definitely one that I watch the most often. It's a really fun adventure film, and I like all the characters. I've been reading a heck of a lot of articles on Disney films lately, and so many of the Atlantis reviews mention the characters, how many of them are annoying (especially Audrey, who I love).

Anyhoo, the reason why I'm bumping up this thread is this:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/6327
And my last little problem is the rich millionaire, Mr. Harcourt, who funds the operation. We are introduced to him as he is doing yoga and being quite jovial and funny. He apparently was an old friend of Thatch’s Grandfather. We again see him joking at the end of the film about the outcome of things and wishing Milo well. But didn’t he hire these ruthless money grubbing mercenaries in the first place? What were his intentions? And why is he still a good guy if he actually was funding the whole operation which would have killed off a whole civilization. Maybe you’d say that the mercenaries were acting of there own will and he didn’t really know what was going on. Well he WAS in cahoots with Commander Rourke. Here is why….

There is a book found by Milo’s granddad, written in an unreadable language, which shows the way to Atlantis. Mr. Harcourt was entrusted with it until Milo was ready to read and decipher it with his linguistic skill. Once he felt Milo was ready he gives it to Milo and the adventure begins. Now here is the problem….Milo finds out a page is missing from the middle of the book. Later in the movie we find out that this page shows exactly where the Crystal is. Guess who has the page? Rourke. How could he have it? Only if Mr. Harcourt had given it to him. Now that is why Harcourt is in cahoots. Here is why THAT doesn’t even makes sense….If the book can only be read by Milo, how could anybody know which page to rip out?

Now you might be thinking that I am too harsh. I am not. I had a fun time with this movie. But this is Disney. They have no excuse for these kinds of huge plot holes. If old Mr. Harcourt is a bad guy…MAKE him a bad guy!
I had never thought of that- I don't think of that when I'm watching it. But I guess that is a pretty big plot hole...thoughts?

I always kind of thought that Rourke may have stolen the page long before. I mean, they've been involved in other Atlantis expeditions prior to this one. He probably has had plenty of opportunites.

^ But how would he have known what the page said? That's the whole point of having Milo on the expedition- he can read Atlantian; most other people can't.

Perhaps Milo's grandfather? As Rourke told Milo he was weak or something like his grandfather with ideas or as much as an idealist as his grandfather near the climax of Rourke's Demise and maybe Rourke made the offer to his grandfather but he said no I want to leave this to my grandson so Rourke asked for the translation of the page just for scientific reasons, rather than reveal his greedy desires for why he wanted a translation of the page, and instead of forcing his hand he decided to wait for Milo to grow up because he knew it was worth waiting for... Also remember when Helga Sinclair quietly asks Rourke about the fact they though there wasn't suppose to be anyone actually down here and to that Rourke replies well we will just have to improvise...everything stays on schedule as planned.....

I'm not a fan of the movie for many reasons but the main reason is because of the death/violence etc. I don't like it when characters besides the villain die. When I watch an animated movie, I want to be transported to a world that has ups and downs but mostly is a happy place, like Disneyland.

A friend of mine is a fan of the movie though, here are some of the reasons why they like it:
1. The animation
2. Milo
3. The culture and design of Atlantis
4. None of the females are Snow White (basically helpless)
5. All of the characters are unique

I believe Milo's Grandfather probably while on the expedition in Iceland, read some of it to the crew and then Rourke stole that page.
